Since the day Marco brazenly brought his young mistress to live with him in his house in Quezon City with the excuse of “wanting to try something new”, the life of Liza – his gentle and hard-working wife for more than 20 years – has completely changed. She did not cry, did not blame, and did not make a fuss. Liza just quietly did housework, took care of her parents-in-law as if nothing had happened.
But there was one thing that made Marco start to feel uneasy: every night, his wife dressed extremely neatly, put on makeup carefully, wore a beautiful dress, sprayed on luxurious perfume, and then walked out of the house as if going to a party. She did not tell anyone, did not explain anything, and did not appear to be in pain. She just… left.
At first, Marco did not care. He thought his wife was just pretending to live well to save face. But gradually, curiosity gnawed at him every day. His mistress, Trina, began to whisper:
— I suspect she has someone else, her face is always bright, and her clothes are unusually luxurious. You should be careful.
A man’s pride was touched. One night, after seeing his wife quietly leaving the house in a seductive red dress, Marco decided to follow her. He put on a coat, put on a baseball cap, called a Grab and followed the taxi his wife had just taken.
The car stopped in front of the PETA Theater Center in New Manila, Quezon City. Liza got out and strode confidently inside. Marco stopped not far away, hiding behind a lamppost, his heart pounding. He thought he was about to catch his wife cheating, and despite his mixed feelings, he still wanted to know what she was doing.
But the scene behind the glass door left him rooted to the spot.
Liza stepped onto the stage of an acting class. She was greeted with applause as if she were someone special. The instructor – everyone called him Direk Ramon – introduced:
— This is Liza – a former stage actress in Manila. She took a break for nearly 20 years because of her family. But now, she is back, and her talent is still intact.
Applause broke out. Liza began to get into character. Her voice was full of emotion, her eyes were sharp, her movements were decisive and expressive. The whole room fell silent. Marco was stunned. He never knew his wife was an actress. He couldn’t believe that after months of betrayal, she could still stand on stage with such pride.
Liza didn’t have an affair. She was finding herself again.
She revived her passion, her dream that had been put aside for her husband and children. And now, when she was pushed to the sidelines of her marriage, she chose to step into the light, instead of sitting in the dark and crying.
Marco stood there for a long time. Suddenly, he felt small. In the past few days, he had been absorbed in his beautiful young lover, thinking that Liza would only bow her head in resignation. But no, that woman was stronger than he thought. While he was sinking deeper into sin, she rose from the ruins and shone.
That night, he got home before his wife. Trina was lying down scrolling on her phone, when she saw him, she asked bitterly:
— Caught red-handed? Or did she really go see her ex?
Marco didn’t answer. In his mind, there was only the image of Liza on stage, the spotlight shining on her radiant face.
The next day, he quietly searched for performances with Liza’s name on them. Not long after, Liza appeared in a small drama program organized by the class at the center’s black box theater. Marco sat in the back row, in the middle of the audience. She didn’t know he was coming, and probably didn’t need to know.
The play ended with thunderous applause. Liza bowed her head, her eyes shining with pure joy. Marco felt his nose sting.
When he left, he waited for her at the gate.
— Liza… can I talk to you for a moment?
Liza looked at him. Her eyes no longer blamed, nor were they filled with longing. It was just the calmness of someone who had overcome a storm.
— I used to spend my youth living for my husband, for my children. Now I want to live for myself. If you need a good wife, who cooks at home and endures… then that is no longer me.
She left, her back straight, her head held high. Marco stood behind, his heart in turmoil. He did not know when he lost his wife, he only knew that now, he was no longer worthy to walk with her.
