I gave my wife $1,000 every month, and she spent it all – I went mad, then discovered a shocking secret involving her and the old man next door…
I turned off the engine and quietly observed. My wife handed a bag to the old man, they said something to each other, and then she turned and walked away. Her face looked both exhausted and slightly worried.
I was shaking with anger, a thousand horrible thoughts racing through my mind. She was pregnant, staying home alone, and now suddenly getting close to the old neighbor… I was trembling—out of fear, out of rage, and out of total confusion about what was happening.
My wife was in her 7th month of pregnancy. Her belly was already big, and it was hard for her to move around, but she still tried her best to cook and do the laundry on her own. I felt deeply for her. So every time I got my salary at the beginning of the month, I immediately gave her 10 million VND (around $1,000) to cover household expenses, plus a little extra for herself. The rest I kept to pay off debts and save up for the baby’s arrival.
My salary wasn’t high, but for a young couple like us, being a little frugal was enough. Yet every month, like clockwork, near the end of the month, she would text me:
“Honey, can I have a little more money for food…?”
At first, I thought maybe she was just eating more because of the pregnancy—then there were prenatal vitamins, milk, ultrasounds, tests… those things aren’t cheap. But the more I thought about it, the stranger it seemed. My wife rarely ate anything extravagant. She was usually frugal and preferred cooking at home. When I asked her about it, she just smiled awkwardly and said:
“Just small stuff, honey. I don’t even remember where the money goes sometimes.”
I was busy with work all the time, so I didn’t pay much attention. But over time, my curiosity kept growing. Especially one day, when I came home earlier than usual. It was raining, the roads were flooded, and I rushed home, hoping for a bowl of hot soup my wife usually cooked.
As I turned into our alley, I saw… my wife standing at the door of our neighbor Uncle Hòa’s house, holding a fairly large plastic bag. Uncle Hòa is a man in his 60s who lives alone. That scene made me freeze, my heart pounding.
I turned off the engine and quietly observed. My wife handed the bag to him, they said a few words, and then she turned and walked away. Her face looked tired and a little worried. I stepped out and stopped her:
“What were you doing in there?”
My wife turned pale, stammering:
“Uh… I just brought him some stuff…”
I pressed:
“What stuff? Why did you bring it?”
She looked down, staying silent. I was trembling with anger, all kinds of terrible thoughts flashed through my mind. She was pregnant, home alone, and getting close to the male neighbor… I was shaking with fear, with rage, and with utter confusion.
That evening, after dinner, I pulled a chair to sit down across from her:
“I want the truth. What have you been doing with the money I give you every month? And what was that all about this afternoon?”
My wife sat quietly for a long while, eyes red with tears. Finally, she sighed:
“I’m sorry for hiding it from you… but it’s not what you think.”
It turned out Uncle Hòa had serious kidney disease and was struggling financially. His children lived far away. He kept it a secret from everyone, but one day he collapsed in the alley, and my wife was the one who helped him back into his house. Since then, she had quietly set aside a portion of the grocery money to buy him milk, nutritious porridge, and supplements.
“I just thought… if I could help someone, I should. He’s old, and all alone. I care for him like I care for my own parents…” she said, her voice breaking.
I was stunned. All my jealousy and suspicion vanished, replaced only by a choking sense of regret. I looked at my wife’s round belly, thinking of all the days she had carried it heavily while still running around helping others, and my heart twisted.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.
She just shook her head.
“I was afraid you’d be upset. Afraid you’d think I was meddling in other people’s business…”
That night, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep. The next morning, I got up early, bought some fruit, and went with my wife to visit Aunt Hòa. She was surprised, then moved to tears as she thanked us and scolded my wife for “hiding it from her husband and causing him to misunderstand.” From that point on, I began setting aside a bit more money and asking about Aunt Hòa more often. My wife became more cheerful, no longer needing to sneak around. The next month, when she went for an ultrasound, I took a day off work to go with her.
Watching the ultrasound screen, hearing our baby’s heartbeat, I held my wife’s hand tightly and said, “Thank you—for the baby, and for teaching me how to care for others.”
Perhaps it’s my wife’s kindness and compassion that made me love and appreciate her even more. She may be physically weak from pregnancy, but her strength is extraordinary, and she’s capable of doing things that make men like me bow our heads in admiration.
