The bride was giving a speech when she fainted in the middle of the wedding ceremony when she saw the birthmark on the groom’s mother’s hand. The terrible truth that had been hidden for so long
The horrifying secret in the wedding ceremony in Manila
The wedding music was bustling, the grand banquet hall at Manila Hotel was as splendid as a golden dream. Isabela – the young bride, walked on the red carpet, holding hands with Miguel – the man she loved with all her heart. This should have been the happiest day of her life.
Below the stage, everyone applauded enthusiastically. Doña Celia – Miguel’s mother, a noble, gentle woman, stood up and gently adjusted Isabela’s veil, her eyes full of affection:
– “You are so beautiful… from now on, call me mama.”
Isabela smiled, but her heart was filled with an inexplicable feeling of suffocation.
From the first time she met Doña Celia, she felt an indescribable familiarity. The gentle gait, the hoarse voice, the deep eyes… all made her heart ache. But Isabela told herself, maybe it was just emotion. Unexpectedly, the terrible truth was about to tear everything apart.
The MC said:
– “Please, the bride and groom, prepare to exchange rings.”
Isabela reached out to take the ring from the little bridesmaid when suddenly, a small handkerchief fell out of Doña Celia’s purse. A detail that seemed accidental, but to Isabela — like a lightning bolt struck her heart.
That handkerchief was embroidered with the name “Isabela” and the words “Mama’s daughter, forever loved” in faded blue thread — exactly like the handkerchief she had kept as a treasure for over 20 years.
That handkerchief… she had brought with her when she was abandoned in front of the orphanage gate in Quezon City when she was three years old.
Isabela rushed down and snatched the handkerchief from the woman’s hand.
– “This handkerchief… why do you have it?” – her voice trembled.
Doña Celia was stunned, about to pull back, but then stopped. And under the gaze of hundreds of guests, she burst into tears:
“Isabela… you… are mama’s daughter?”
The atmosphere exploded. Miguel was stunned, the guests stood up.
Isabela was petrified. Her ears were ringing. All the music, applause, congratulations… suddenly became painful.
“No way!” she screamed, her eyes panicked. “You are Miguel’s mother! If you are also my mother… then… am I going to marry… my brother?!”
A murmur ran through the hall. The elderly were stunned, friends stood still.
Doña Celia collapsed, tears streaming down her face:
– “No! I am not Miguel’s biological child… I am the result of a love affair that Mama was forced to hide. My family forced me to abandon… Mama has been looking for me for years…”
Isabela stepped back, her face pale, her hand dropping the wedding ring.
She turned her back, ran away from the wedding, leaving behind the desperate call of Miguel — the man she thought would be her husband — and the sobbing of the woman she had dreamed of meeting in her childhood sleep.
Part 2: The Journey to Find the Truth
Running Away from the Wedding
Isabela ran in the pouring rain outside the Manila hotel, her pure white wedding dress now covered in mud. Questions rushed through her head: Who am I? Why is my real mother Miguel’s mother? And where will this love… go?
The phone rang incessantly. Miguel called and texted repeatedly: “Isa, I don’t know about this. Trust me, we will find out the truth together.”
But Isabela didn’t dare pick up the phone. Her heart was both in pain and fear.
Shards of Memories
A few days later, Isabela went to the Quezon City orphanage where she used to live. The nun, now old, looked at her with emotion:
– “You are little Isabela… I still remember the handkerchief you held tightly when you were left at the gate. A noble woman, with a sorrowful look, entrusted you to her in the dark. She did not say her name, just cried and put you back.”
Those words made Isabela shudder. It was definitely Doña Celia. But why did she abandon her, then many years later adopt Miguel as her own?
A dialogue with the truth
Finally, Isabela arranged to meet Doña Celia at the old church in Intramuros. The noble woman was waiting, her face haggard from crying for many days.
– “Isabela… Mama, I am sorry. You never deserved that.”
– “Why? Why did you abandon me? And why am I… Miguel’s sister?” – Isabela screamed, her tears mixing with the rain.
Doña Celia trembled as she recounted:
– “I am not Miguel’s biological sister. I am the result of my mother’s first love, with a man that my family did not accept. They forced me to abandon you. Later, my mother married Miguel’s father, who did not know that he had another daughter. My mother searched for me for years… until I saw you in Miguel’s arms, my heart ached, but I was also happy because at least you were loved.”
That confession was like a second storm sweeping through Isabela’s heart.
Unfair love
Miguel appeared, his eyes red:
– “Isa, we do not have the same father. We are not related. Don’t let prejudice destroy this love.”
Isabela looked at him, her heart torn. Their love was no longer bound by blood, but was overshadowed by secrets, social gazes, and the pain of being abandoned throughout childhood.
She whispered:
– “You are the one I love… but I need time. I have to find myself first.”
A New Beginning
Isabela left Manila, starting a journey to find her biological father, who she had never known, to understand the origin of the story. Miguel promised to wait, and Doña Celia continued to pray every day for her daughter’s forgiveness.
On the bus leaving the city, Isabela hugged the handkerchief to her chest. Despite her painful past, for the first time in her life, she felt she was getting closer to the truth.
The sunset covered the shore, and she whispered:
– “Mama’s daughter… this time, I will live up to that name.”
