“I Just Gave Birth When My Mother-in-Law Told Me My Husband Had an Affair…”
He sat quietly on the edge of the bed, holding my hand tightly. He didn’t smile. There was no “Congratulations.” The words he let out were like ice amidst the heat of new life:
“Son… Erick already has a girlfriend.”
I felt like I was falling apart.
I couldn’t believe it. I had just given birth. I loved him with all my heart. And here I was, abandoned and betrayed at my most vulnerable. I didn’t have the strength yet, but the pain I felt was deeper than the wound of childbirth.
But what surprised me even more—Aling Cora wasn’t angry. Instead, her tone was calm but firm:
“Don’t forgive us right away. When we are deceived, let’s not make it normal. If he leaves, he shouldn’t take anything with him—not even a child. Everything should go to you.”
I don’t understand. I thought he was a typical mother-in-law—strict, traditional, always partial to his son. But no. It seems like he’s angrier than me.
“Don’t worry. If you become a single mom, I will help you. I will take care of my grandson. We don’t need Erick.”
And despite everything, Aling Cora became like a pillar of support for me.
Three Months After Childbirth
I moved to their house in Caloocan to raise and take care of Baby Enzo. My mom is dead, and my dad has remarried, so Aling Cora is the only one I have left to lean on.
She took care of me like her own child. When I had a fever at night, she would take care of my grandson, change his diaper, and feed him milk. I gradually felt better, and the pain in my heart seemed to be gradually covered by new love.
But Erick—he kept calling, pleading, apologizing. He wanted to make amends. But Aling Cora, always stood in the way.
Until I agreed to file for annulment. On the day of the hearing, he helped me speak. He even testified against his own son. He called me a womanizer, irresponsible.
I won the case. I had Enzo. I thought it was all over.
But I was wrong.
Two Months After Annulment
One night, while I was feeding Enzo milk, I heard Aling Cora talking on the phone in her room. I was about to knock, but I stopped when I heard her cold tone:
“It’s okay. There’s an annulment. The child is his. Erick, he’s getting married to someone new. The property is also ready to be transferred to my eldest daughter. Enzo, just let his mother raise him.”
It felt like the world was crashing down on me. I got burned by a milk bottle but I didn’t feel anything.
Sister? Property? Is Erick getting married again?
The truth is, he didn’t choose me. He just used me as his grandson’s mother. And now, they’re ready to replace me.
I entered the room. My voice trembled:
“Mom… why?”
There was no fear on Aling Cora’s face. She just looked at me:
“Because you weren’t enough for Erick. I didn’t abandon you. I even helped you stand up. But the battle in life—whoever is brave, wins.”
[Part 2: Elena’s Resurrection]
I left that night, taking Enzo with me, and headed to a small rented room in Novaliches. That’s where it all started.
I used the rest of my sales knowledge. I started selling beauty products online. I would wake up at five in the morning to answer customers while Enzo slept. I would go to bed early in the morning, after wrapping orders and studying Facebook Ads.
The first few months were even harder than giving birth. But I remembered my late mother’s instructions:
“Son, no matter how difficult it is, don’t let it get you down. Always stand up.”
And I stood up.
Four Years Later
I’m Elena—no longer the woman crying in the delivery room. I’m the owner of a well-known online beauty brand, with my own team, my own warehouse. I have a community built by solo moms.
Enzo is now in kindergarten. He is a smart and respectful boy. He often asks:
“Mom, why don’t I have a dad?”
My answer is always:
“Because I chose to love you completely—even if it’s alone.”
One day, while I was a speaker at a women empowerment event in Makati, I saw in the audience… Aling Cora.
He walked closer after the event. His hair was thinning, he was carrying a cane.
“Elena… I never thought you would come to this.”
I’m just quiet.
“Erick… is gone. He had an accident in Laguna. He left his son with his new wife—she left him too. If only…”
I stared at him. So many memories.
“I will help the child. But not because of you. Because he is innocent.”
And for the first time, I saw tears in the eyes of a woman I once called mother.
Enzo, next to me, holding my hand tightly.
“Mom, let’s go. Let’s get the baby.”
“Yes, son, let’s go.”
