I sat in my small, newly rented apartment in Quezon City, the pale yellow light illuminating the bare walls. After my divorce from Marco, I thought I had cut all ties with the past. But today, a huge transfer suddenly appeared in my bank account – ten million pesos, without any explanation.
At the same time, an old safe was delivered to my doorstep, along with a short note: “Buksan mo ito, Teresa. Kuya ng asawa mo, Ramon.”
Ramon. Marco’s older brother. Someone I had only met a few times during our five years of marriage. He had always been distant, cold and mysterious, as if he was hiding something. I had never felt comfortable around him, but I had never thought of him as having anything to do with my life. So why was he depositing money in this safe now?
I opened the safe with trembling hands. Inside were hundreds of photos – all of them of me. I went to work, I sat alone in a cafe in Makati, I stood by the window of my old apartment in Mandaluyong, even the moments I thought no one would notice: crying in a jeepney after a fight with Marco, standing silently at my mother’s funeral three years ago in Pampanga.
Each photo was taken from a distance, as if someone had been secretly watching me for years. On the back of each photo was a neatly handwritten line: “Sana maging ligtas ka at masaya, Teresa. – Ramon”
My heart pounded. Why was Ramon doing this? What did he want?
I called Marco, but he just snapped:
“Ramon? Matagal nang nasa abroad ‘yon. Don’t drag me into your nonsense.”
Marco hung up, leaving me with a series of unanswered questions.
I decided to find Ramon. Through old connections, I discovered that he had lived in a small house outside Tagaytay, now abandoned. I drove there, carrying the safe and a bad feeling.
The house was covered in dust, but in the corner of the living room, I found an old wooden box. Inside were handwritten letters, written in Ramon’s familiar handwriting.
They were not addressed to me, but to… Marco.
In the letters, Ramon told me that he had loved me since the first time he met me, when I was still Marco’s girlfriend. He hid his feelings, but he couldn’t stop himself from secretly following me, taking pictures as a way to keep me close. He wrote:
“Teresa was never mine, but I just want her to be happy.”
I read on, trembling. One letter revealed that Ramon had discovered Marco’s affair in the second year of our marriage. He tried to protect me, secretly gathering evidence, but didn’t dare say it out loud for fear of hurting me.
The ten million pesos? It was the money he had saved from selling his startup in Cebu, sent to me as a way to make amends for not intervening sooner.
But the real twist came in the last letter. Ramon wrote that he was terminally ill, with only a few months left to live. He knew he wouldn’t be able to see me, so he arranged for me to receive the safe and the money after he died.
I looked at the date on the letter: three weeks ago. My heart sank.
I called Ramon’s number again, but only got an automated answer:
“Ang numerong ito ay wala na sa serbisyo.”
I returned home, hugging the safe tightly. The photos were no longer scary, but like the last whispers of someone who had loved me in silence.
But the story didn’t end there. A week later, my phone rang.
It was Marco. His voice was shaking:
“Teresa… I just received a letter from Ramon. He’s… he’s alive. And he said he wants to meet both of us.
Confrontation in the Dark
That night, Marco asked me to meet him at an old cafe on the shore of Manila Bay. The place was almost deserted, with only a few yellow lights flickering on the dark water. As soon as I entered, I saw Marco waiting, his face more anxious than ever.
“Are you sure Ramon will come?” I whispered, my heart pounding.
Marco nodded, his hand shaking as he held the cold cup of coffee:
“I just received the letter yesterday. The handwriting is Ramon’s. I don’t understand… if he’s dead, then who is he now?”
Before I could say more, a tall, thin figure appeared at the door. The dim light clearly revealed a thin, pale face – but the eyes were as deep as ever. Ramon.
I was stunned, my whole body cold. Marco stood up, his voice faltering:
“Ramon… you… are you really alive?”
Ramon walked forward, slowly pulling out a chair and sitting down across from us. His voice was hoarse, like someone who had spent years in the dark:
“You never died. But you had to disappear.”
The air was thick, only the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks remained. I hesitated:
“But why… why me? Why have you been following me for so many years?”
Ramon looked straight at me, his eyes flashing with pain:
“Because Marco is not who you think he is. I witnessed him betraying you early on. But the truth is even more cruel than that.”
Marco angrily slammed his hand on the table:
“Don’t make up stories, Ramon! You disappeared for so many years, and now you come back to make up stories to ruin my life?”
Ramon laughed coldly, pulled a thick file from his pocket, and threw it on the table. The papers flew out, falling to the floor.
I bent down to pick it up, my heart sinking when I saw the logo of a private hospital in Makati, along with the DNA test certificate.
“Teresa…” – Ramon looked at me, his voice breaking –
“I discovered the truth three years ago. Marco… not only had an affair. He also had a son that he hid from you. And that son… is the reason I had to disappear.”
I trembled as I opened the paper. Each line burned my eyes: Results confirmed the father-son relationship: Marco Dela Cruz and Santiago Cruz – 99.9% match.
I looked up, looked at Marco, his face pale, sweat pouring down his temples.
“Is that true?” – my voice choked.
Marco was silent, his eyes averted.
Ramon clenched his fists and continued, “I tried to give you the evidence, but Marco knew. He hired someone to kill me. I had no choice but to fake my own death to escape. And now, I’ve come back… because you need to know the truth.”
I felt the world collapse under my feet. Marco stood up trembling, his voice gritting out each word:
“You’re lying! I did everything… just to protect the honor of this family!”
Ramon stood up, facing his younger brother, his eyes blazing:
“No, Marco. You did everything just to hide your betrayal. And I swear, Teresa will no longer have to live a lie.”
The entire cafeteria held its breath. I sat there, frozen, sandwiched between two siblings who were about to explode into a storm I never expected.
– The Truth Revealed and Decided Life and Death
The atmosphere in the cafe on the shore of Manila Bay was thick, heavy to the point of suffocation. I sat there, frozen, my hands clutching the DNA file, my heart pounding in my chest. Marco and Ramon stood facing each other, their eyes like blades ready to cut.
Marco broke the silence first:
“Ramon, you dare to make up stories to steal my wife? I’ve seen you look at Teresa with unusual eyes before. All of these tricks… are just excuses for you to interfere.”
Ramon gritted his teeth, his voice roaring:
“Enough, Marco! I don’t need to make up stories. I have evidence, I have letters, I have witnesses. That child is yours with another woman, while Teresa still blindly trusts you!”
I trembled, tears welling up in my eyes. Marco slammed his fist on the table, his face contorted with anger:
“Yes! I have a child. And what? I am a man, I have the right! Teresa will never leave me, because she is weak, because she needs me!”
That sentence was like a knife piercing straight into my heart. I looked at him – the one who had promised to protect and love me – now revealing his true form as a selfish, cruel person.
Ramon took a step forward, blocking me:
“No, Marco. Teresa is not weak. You used her love to hide your lies. From now on, you will no longer have the right to decide her life.”
Marco smiled faintly, his eyes full of challenge:
“And you, Ramon? What are you in her life? A failure, a ghost who faked his death to escape. Do you think Teresa will choose you over me?”
I sobbed, my hands clenched the file, my whole body trembling. This was the moment I had to make a choice:
– If I believed Marco, I would continue to be bound in a marriage full of lies.
– If I believed Ramon, it meant accepting the whole cruel truth, accepting the collapse of the past, but being able to find a new path.
I took a deep breath, my voice trembling but determined:
“Marco… I believed you for many years. But today, you exposed yourself. I have nothing left to hold on to.”
Marco was stunned, his eyes wide open. Ramon looked at me, his eyes mixed with pain and relief.
I stood up, hugging the file tightly to my chest, each word like a final stab:
“You’re right, Marco. I am weak. But from now on, I will not be weak for you anymore. I choose the truth. I choose freedom.”
Marco roared, rushing forward as if to grab me. But Ramon stepped in front, clutching his brother’s shoulder, his eyes blazing:
“Stop, Marco. If you touch Teresa again… I won’t forgive you.”
The entire cafe shook with the sound of the collision, chairs falling over. I stepped back, my heart both aching and relieved. Finally, I made my choice.
