In a scandal that has rocked both the political and entertainment spheres, actress-turned-politician Angelica Dela Cruz is now facing serious plunder charges over the alleged misappropriation of ₱70 million in public funds during her time in office. The news has sent shockwaves through social media and the halls of government, as the former star finds herself at the center of a potentially career-ending controversy.
From Screen to Scrutiny
Once beloved as a primetime TV darling, Angelica successfully transitioned into politics and served as a local public official. But that success is now overshadowed by grave accusations that during her term, millions of pesos in public funds were allegedly mishandled or “disappeared” under suspicious circumstances.
According to documents submitted to the Ombudsman, whistleblowers and audit records point to irregularities in procurement, ghost projects, and unliquidated disbursements involving infrastructure and livelihood programs.
“This is not just a case of mismanagement. This involves calculated decisions to funnel public funds,” a legal analyst said.
“If proven, this fits the definition of plunder — a non-bailable offense.”
A Public Denial
Angelica Dela Cruz has vehemently denied the accusations. In a brief statement released through her legal team, she asserted that she “has always served with integrity” and vowed to fight the charges in court.
“I have nothing to hide. Every peso spent during my term was accounted for and used for the benefit of the people,” she said.
Supporters have rallied behind her online, using hashtags like #IStandWithAngelica and #DueProcessFirst, while critics demand transparency and accountability.
Political Fallout
Analysts say that the plunder case could derail Angelica’s future political ambitions, especially if the court finds probable cause to proceed with trial. Several local leaders have already distanced themselves from the embattled former actress, while political opponents are calling for a full investigation into her administration’s financial records.
“This case should serve as a reminder that no one is above the law — not even celebrities-turned-politicians,” a government watchdog group stated.
What’s Next?
The Office of the Ombudsman is currently reviewing the case, and if sufficient evidence is found, a formal indictment could follow in the coming weeks. If convicted, Angelica Dela Cruz could face life imprisonment and forfeiture of all unlawfully acquired wealth.
A stunning fall from grace? Or a political witch hunt? As the investigation unfolds, the truth behind the ₱70 million question may soon come to light — and with it, the fate of one of showbiz and politics’ most familiar faces.
Angelika dela Cruz charged with plunder over alleged misuse of ₱70 million barangay funds
Barangay Chair and actress-turned-politician Angelika dela Cruz has been slapped with plunder and administrative complaints before the Office of the Ombudsperson.
The charges, filed on Monday, accuse Dela Cruz of misusing at least ₱70 million in public funds from Barangay Longos, Malabon City.
Aside from the plunder complaint, she is also facing administrative cases for allegedly neglecting her responsibilities as barangay captain. The complaint cited her frequent absences without official leave and the unauthorized delegation of her duties to her brother, Barangay Kagawad Erick dela Cruz.
Dela Cruz, who is currently campaigning for the position of Vice Mayor in the upcoming midterm elections, has yet to issue a public statement regarding the allegations.
