The girl took a selfie during a hike with her grandparents. But when her mother enlarged the image, she froze and began to panic/th
Anna Lawrence sat at her desk in her office, where slanting rays of sunlight filtered through the blinds. On the laptop screen, a table was displayed—a key project on which her possible promotion depended.
But I couldn’t concentrate. Anna changed her position for the tenth time, rubbed her tired eyes and, muttering: “This isn’t working,” moved away from the table. There was an unnatural silence in the house. Usually her five-year-old daughter Emma filled the space, chattering with a ringing laugh about kindergarten or begging to be pushed on the swings in the yard.
But today Emma was on a hike with her grandparents, and the silence was becoming unbearable. Anna headed to the bedroom, then to the bathroom, where her fingers trembled as she reached for the prescription pills hidden behind the bottle of mouthwash. At that moment, her husband, Tom, appeared in the doorway. His face expressed a mixture of alarm and disappointment. He calmly entered and reminded: “You promised, Anna. Four months without pills.
Do you remember? Anna lowered her hand. Her voice wavered. “I just need to focus. One time – and I will finish the project.” But Tom was adamant: “If you accept one, there will be another one later. We will return to square one.” Anna nodded, realizing that he was right. The pills were left in the cupboard.
She gave her word to him, to the therapist and to herself. Returning to the bedroom, she heard a notification on her phone. It was a message from her mother, Diana. The photo is a blurry selfie of Emma with meaningless text. Anna smiled: her daughter was playing with her grandmother’s phone. But then another photo arrived. More clear.
Emma with her tongue hanging out, looking happy against the backdrop of a campsite. Behind her are Grandma Diana, Grandpa Henry and one more person – a man. Anna squinted and enlarged the image. And then she screamed, “Tom! Come here!” The husband returned to the room, Anna showed him the photo: “Do you see this? This is my ex David! Tom frowned, “Are you sure? He has changed, after all. ” The hair is different.” “It’s definitely him.
He got out of prison, but why didn’t they tell me? — the woman shouted. Overwhelmed with anxiety, Anna called her mother and father, but there was no answer. Then they rushed into the car with Tom. Their destination is the Redwood Trails Campground, located in the Oregon mountains.
On the way, Anna checked the date: five years since David was imprisoned for domestic violence and drugs. Tom reminded her that her parents were experienced travelers and quite strong people, but Anna could not calm down. When they arrived, the campsite was cordoned off by police. Diana and Henry were sitting at the table, the detective was talking to them.
Henry has a bruise and ice on his temple. They explained: the man introduced himself as “Mr. Carson,” came with a woman named Lana, and both were nice and friendly. We even had a barbecue and played a lot with Emma. But in the morning they took the girl away.
When Henry tried to stop them, Carson hit him and fled. The police have already sent out a description. Anna showed a photo where David was and confirmed: it was him. The detective took the photo for analysis. At that moment, Anna’s phone vibrated. Unknown number. She answered and froze: the voice on the other end belonged to David. He was calm.
He said Emma was okay. He doesn’t want to harm her, just “talk.” He demanded that Anna come alone with Emma’s documents: birth certificate, medical records. She lied to Tom and said it was a call from work. After all the formalities with the police, Tom took his parents to the hospital. Anna went home and took the documents out of the safe.
On the verge of a breakdown, she again reached for pills, but at the last moment she pulled herself out from under the power of addiction. I promised myself again to be strong. The meeting was arranged at the Good Morning cafe in the small town of Brighton. Anna parked near the cafe. In the sandbox she saw Emma. Next to me is that same woman, Lana.
When she noticed Anna, she quickly took the girl aside. She then walked up to Anna, pointing to a private room in the cafe where David was waiting. He looked different – well-groomed, polite, reserved. At first glance, his behavior seemed calm to Anna, but behind this politeness there was a threat. He didn’t just insist, he pressed. With words, tone, gestures.
He demanded that Anna acknowledge him as Emma’s father and allow him not only to see the girl, but to take part in her upbringing – up to and including joint custody. His speech was vague, but the point was clear: either she cooperated, or he would tell the police and child welfare about her dark past – the money she had stolen from her employer, the drugs she had used during her pregnancy, and the lies on which she had built her new life. His blackmail was carefully calculated, he knew where to hit.
Anna felt the ground slipping out from under her feet. And yet she agreed. Her daughter shouldn’t suffer. She went to Emma and gently told her that she had “two dads.” The girl took it naively and easily. She agreed to spend the night with the “new dad” if her mother would go with them.
Anna followed them to David’s house. She went inside and saw guns and drugs all over the house. Realizing that David had n’t really changed at all, she ran out to the car, but David stopped her and a fight broke out. He hit her and dragged her into the house. But the police arrived quickly thanks to Emma, who called them.
Anna woke up in a hospital, surrounded by sterile light and the rhythmic beeping of medical equipment. Her head was throbbing with pain, her body felt alien, broken. The nurse, noticing her awakening, reported that Emma was safe and waiting to be seen. These words became a saving island of hope for Anna .
When Tom and Emma entered the room, the girl rushed to her, clinging to her chest, as if trying to glue her mother, who had been broken into pieces, together. Anna could hardly hold back her tears. Emma saved her – a brave little girl who didn’t lose her head, called the police and reported the attack. It was more than just courage – it was an act of love.
Later, when the officers entered the room, Anna told everything: about David’s threats, about his blackmail, about her own mistakes, which she had hidden for years. She felt that, despite her shame and fear, she had to be honest – for her daughter’s sake, for herself. The detectives assured her that her sincerity and cooperation would be appreciated.
Anna understood that there was a difficult path ahead. She faced investigation, trial, and punishment for her past actions could not be ruled out . But at that moment she felt power. Not the power that comes from power or revenge. And the one that is born at the moment when you stop running and decide to look the truth in the eye. And, as Emma said, clinging tightly to her mother: “I still have only one dad – our Tom.
And you, mommy, are the strongest.” Anna smiled through her tears. She knew that now she could survive anything. Dear viewers, what do you think about this story?
