Manila, Philippines – Amid swirling rumors and explosive headlines about his supposed dismissal, Arnell Ignacio, the former Administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), has finally spoken out — and he’s setting the record straight.

In an exclusive statement delivered through both social media and direct interviews with select media outlets, Ignacio revealed the truth behind his exit from OWWA, dismissing allegations that he was unceremoniously fired and instead emphasizing that he voluntarily resigned after serving with “honor, exhaustion, and a full heart.”

“Hindi Ako Sinibak.”

The veteran entertainer-turned-public servant made it crystal clear:

“Let me correct what’s been circulating—I was not fired. I submitted my resignation letter because I knew I had fulfilled my purpose. I served our OFWs with all my heart, but it was time to rest and refocus.”

His statement comes after tabloid-style headlines and social media posts suggested otherwise, with some even hinting at a possible controversy or internal conflict within the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

Years of Service and Sacrifice

Ignacio, who first took office under the Duterte administration and was later retained by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., has been widely recognized for his hands-on approach in assisting distressed OFWs around the globe. From repatriation efforts during the pandemic to welfare checks on overseas Filipinos in crisis, he often flew to personally oversee operations.

“It’s not an easy job. The weight of it can take a toll on your mental and physical health,” he admitted. “I had to face families in mourning, OFWs in jail, and victims of abuse almost every day. That kind of work stays with you.”

Public Reaction: Praise and Doubt

His statement drew mixed reactions online. Many netizens praised his candor and appreciated the work he had done for migrant workers:

“He really cared for OFWs. Arnell was one of the few who went beyond photo-ops,” one user posted.

“Thank you for your service, Arnell. You left with integrity,” said another.

However, some still questioned the timing of his resignation and called for more transparency from both Ignacio and OWWA.

Di raw nag-resign! Arnell Ignacio, sinibak bilang OWWA administrator?

What’s Next for Arnell?

When asked if he plans to return to the entertainment industry or politics, Arnell offered a measured response:

“Right now, I just want to breathe. I gave five years of my life to this job, and I’m proud of what we accomplished. I won’t say ‘never’ to new opportunities, but I need to rest.”

Still, he left the door open for a possible return to public service “if the need arises and if the calling is strong.”

Final Words to the OFW Community

Arnell ended his message with a heartfelt note to the overseas Filipino workers he served:

“To all the OFWs I met and those I never had the chance to help — please know I did my best. You are heroes, and it was an honor to serve you.”

As the dust settles, one thing is clear: Arnell Ignacio may have left OWWA, but his legacy as a public servant who wore his heart on his sleeve will be hard to forget

He didn’t resign! Arnell Ignacio, fired as OWWA administrator?
Department of Migrant Workers Undersecretary Patricia Yvonne Caunan is the newly appointed administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) replacing TV host Arnell Ignacio.

Caunan was sworn in for her new position on Friday, May 16.

You can read about this in the DMW press release that was posted on their Facebook post on Friday.

“President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has appointed Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Undersecretary Patricia Yvonne Caunan as the new Administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), succeeding Mr. Arnell Ignacio,” the post reads. I am sincerely grateful for the trust and confidence given to me by our President, and of course, for your continued guidance. I am very fortunate—because my two bosses in the government truly had integrity and cared about OFWs. I have personally witnessed your leadership of POEA and OWWA—your heart is with every Filipino worker abroad,” said OWWA Administrator Caunan.

I know we still have a lot to do. I believe we need an OWWA, a DMW, and a government for OFWs,” he said.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac believes Caunan is deserving of her position.

“She has been a trailblazer, that’s even an understatement. The frontier she has opened for bilateral and international cooperation has been amazing. She has the legal know how, the heart, the common sense, and the common touch, which is the most important,” said the secretary.

Their description of Caunan reads, “With her deep experience in international labor policy and her unwavering dedication to the welfare of overseas Filipino workers, Administrator Caunan brings both expertise and heart to her new role.”

“As DMW Undersecretary for Policy and International Cooperation since 2022, she played a key role in forging 15 bilateral labor agreements with countries such as Canada, Austria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Finland, Denmark, Singapore, Croatia, Slovenia, and Kuwait — each one strengthening protection for OFWs around the world.”

Meanwhile, in a GMA News report on Cacdac, he said that Ignacio did not resign from office but was removed. The reason was because of a land acquisition deal that was allegedly not authorized by OWWA.

“Former administrator Ignacio did not resign from office. He was removed and replaced on the count of loss of trust and confidence due to an anomalous ₱1.4 billion land acquisition deal that did not go through the OWWA Board of Trustees on at least six counts,” he said.

He said that Ignacio should have consulted with their board of trustees, particularly him, before entering into a deal.

Ignacio served as OWWA administrator in 2022 after being appointed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.

But from 2018 to 2019, he was the deputy administrator appointed by former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Meanwhile, Ignacio has not yet made an official statement or response on the issue. The former OWWA administrator has promised to answer questions about this in a proper forum.
