CAMILLE’S REBIRTH: FROM A BROKEN HOME IN TAGUIG TO A NEW LIFE OF HER OWN
She gave up everything for him—her dreams, her health, her happiness. But one night in Taguig, everything shattered… and that’s when her real story began.
Taguig City, Philippines —
Camille staggered home, her body weighed down by exhaustion after another endless shift at the Market Diner in Bonifacio Global City. Her fingers were raw from scrubbing pots, her legs aching from hours on her feet. She clutched a soggy grocery bag and climbed the creaky steps to the old family house in Barangay Ususan, soaked from the evening rain.
She reached for the doorknob — and froze.
Inside, voices. Her mother-in-law’s clipped, haughty tone — the same one that always made Camille feel like she didn’t belong. And her husband, Marco, his voice strained and tired, but not in pain — no, this was something else. Something heavier.
Camille hesitated, the groceries digging into her hip. Then she heard the words that would unravel her world.
“She’s so tired she doesn’t notice anything, Marco. It’s pathetic, really.”
Camille’s breath hitched. Her hand gripped the knob.
“She’s trying, Ma,” Marco muttered.
“Trying? You were a lawyer before the accident! Now you’re living off the scraps she brings home from that grimy karinderya? She’s not a wife — she’s a maid. You deserve more than this life.”
The silence that followed was louder than thunder.
“I know,” Marco finally whispered. “But what choice do I have? She’s the only one earning now.”
Camille’s world stopped. The grocery bag slipped from her grasp — bananas and pandesal rolling across the wet porch. She stood there, stunned.
Then, the sound of a chair scraping against the floor. The soft roll of Marco’s wheelchair. Camille couldn’t listen anymore.
She opened the door.
The dining room light cast a warm glow. Marco looked up, startled — guilt flashing in his eyes. His mother didn’t even blink.
“Rough day?” she said with a smirk.
Camille’s voice trembled. “How long have you been planning this?”
“Planning what?” Marco asked, his voice barely audible.
“To replace me. To push me out. Just say it.”
His mother scoffed.
“You’re being dramatic, Camille. We’re just thinking about what’s best for Marco. If you cared, you’d understand.”
Camille stared at the man she’d sacrificed everything for. The man she’d bathed, fed, comforted through screams in the night. The man she once believed would never turn away from her.
“Maybe she’s right,” Marco said. “You should go stay with your sister in Cavite. Rest.”
Camille nearly laughed. Rest? After everything?
“And who takes care of you while I’m gone?”
“We’ll figure it out,” his mother snapped. “You’ve done enough, haven’t you?”
Those words echoed in Camille’s mind long after she collapsed on the couch that night. In that house that smelled of Tiger Balm and regret, she finally admitted what she’d been too afraid to say: she wasn’t saving Marco anymore.
She was drowning.
The next morning, Camille packed a small suitcase. Just a few clothes. Her Lola’s necklace. Her old journal. No goodbyes.
As she reached the door, her mother-in-law spoke — calm, cruel.
“You’ll come crawling back. Women like you always do.”
Camille paused, turned, and looked her straight in the eye.
“I think you’re wrong.”
And she stepped out into the fresh Taguig morning.
She arrived at her sister Rhea’s place in Imus, Cavite just as the sun rose. Rhea didn’t ask questions. She just opened the door, took one look at Camille’s hollow eyes, and pulled her into a hug that smelled like Downy and rice porridge.
For the first time in years, Camille didn’t have to be strong.
She slept for days. She cried when no one was looking. She sat on Rhea’s small balcony at night, wrapped in an oversized hoodie, watching the lights blink over Manila Bay in the distance.
Then one afternoon, Rhea found her sitting at the table, writing in her journal. Page after page. Poured-out pain and long-buried dreams.
“Is that your writing?” Rhea asked, eyes wide.
Camille blinked, surprised. “I think so.”
“You should keep going, Ate. You were always meant to write. Long before… all this.”
Camille nodded. Maybe she had been. Long before hospitals and wheelchairs and soul-crushing shifts. Every word she wrote felt like a step back to the girl she used to be.
Months passed. Camille got a new job — not in a diner, but at a small community library in Bacoor. The pay was small, but it was quiet, peaceful. In that silence, she heard her own thoughts again.
She’d come home with books, brew instant coffee, and write deep into the night. Her story — messy, real, painful — poured out like a confession.
One day, Rhea handed her an envelope, forwarded from the old house.
It was from Marco.
Camille,
I hope you’re okay.
Mom’s living here now.
I wish things had been different.
Thank you for everything.
—Marco
No apology. No plea. Just a quiet acknowledgment that it was over.
Camille folded the letter, lit a candle, and let the paper burn — the smoke curling toward the sky like a ghost set free.
A year later, in a small bookstore in Makati, Camille stood on a makeshift stage. Her self-published memoir clutched in trembling hands. The room was small, but full. Rhea sat in the front row, proud and teary-eyed.
Camille read aloud the chapter that started it all — the night she heard voices behind the door, the moment she realized she was disappearing in someone else’s story.
When she finished, they clapped — not politely, but as if they truly understood.
A young woman approached afterward, book in hand.
“Your story… it made me feel like maybe I could leave too.”
Camille took her hand and smiled.
“You’re not stuck. You never were.”
Now, every time Camille writes, it’s not just to tell a story — it’s to remind herself of the woman who walked away from the fire, carrying only herself.
And that was more than enough
She thought she was broken beyond repair. But Camille didn’t break — she bloomed. And this time, she’ll never forget what she’s worth.
