Ha Vy walked slowly up the steps of the courthouse, her hand tightly holding the divorce papers still warm with the scent of her ex-husband. She looked up, the summer sky was high but her eyes were stinging.
This morning, when the trial had just ended, Hoang – the man she had loved for 7 years – coldly said:
“We’re done here. I just became CEO, I don’t want a wife like you to hold me back.”
Those words were like a knife piercing his heart. All these years, she had always been there to take care of his every meal and sleep. But with just one word, he had wiped it all away.
The sound of high heels clicking on the cold stone floor echoed in her heart. Ha Vy bent down, took off her shoes, and lifted them up in her hands. She wanted her feet to feel the ground clearly, to remind herself: from now on, she could only rely on herself.
Suddenly the sound of an engine rang out, attracting everyone’s attention in front of the courthouse gate. A shiny black supercar slowly stopped in front of her.
Ha Vy was surprised. The car door opened and out stepped a tall man in a neat gray suit. His eyes were sharp but his gaze towards her was strangely gentle.
“Vy, get in the car.”
She was startled. It was him – Tuan Khang.
Tuan Khang used to be her university friend. At that time, he liked her, but when he found out she loved Hoang, he quietly left after graduation and never came back. She also hasn’t heard from him in 8 years.
“You… why are you here?” – Ha Vy stuttered, her voice trembling.
Tuan Khang did not answer, he just held out his hand in front of her. His long eyelashes drooped slightly, hiding his red eyes. He knew everything. Over the past few days, he had been secretly watching her, knowing she was forced into a divorce, knowing she was humiliated for not being able to have children, knowing she left that house empty-handed.
“Get in the car, I’ll take you out to eat. I don’t want you to be alone right now.”
Ha Vy looked at that big hand. The tears she had been holding back all morning finally flowed out. She got into the car.
In the car, the light mint scent made her feel more comfortable. He fastened her seat belt, a small action but it made her heart ache. How long had it been since someone had been so gentle with her?
The car glided along the lakeside road, the wind blowing coolly. Ha Vy looked at the man beside her. He was still driving, his eyes focused but his hands gripping the steering wheel were strong and steady.
“What have you been doing for the past eight years?” she asked hoarsely.
“I went to Singapore to study for a master’s degree, then developed a chain of software companies. Now I’m back in Vietnam to open a branch. I heard about you so I came to find you.”
“For what?”
Tuan Khang stopped the car by the lake, turned to look at her:
“Vy, I know you’re hurt right now, you don’t need anyone. But I still want to say, I’ve waited for you for 8 years. I’ve never changed. If you’re tired, just lean on me for a while, just for a while.”
Ha Vy burst into tears. Salty tears rolled down her cheeks and onto the back of her hands. She cried because of pain, because of shame, because she knew that there was still someone willing to open their arms to welcome her, even though she had nothing left.
He took her to a small restaurant by the lake, where they served fish noodle soup, which she had loved the most during her college days. He still remembered. Remembered everything she had accidentally said.
While she was eating, the phone rang. It was Hoang.
“Vy, where are you? Quickly sign the remaining property division papers and get out of this city for me.”
She looked at Tuan Khang. He just smiled, gently took her phone, and pressed the off button.
“I don’t need to hear anything unworthy anymore.”
She paused, her chopsticks falling on the table. In that moment, she realized, there are people who only love themselves. But there are also people who, even though they stand silently behind, still give her the whole sky of tenderness.
Outside the glass door, the sunset dyed the lake purple. The wind blew, carrying the scent of fresh grass. Ha Vy raised her head, smiling through her tears. She told herself, divorce is not the end.
Sometimes, leaving a bad person, is the beginning of meeting someone who truly deserves you.
