[SEQUENCE & EPILOGUE: “I CAN FORGIVE, BUT NOT GO BACK” – THE STORY OF HUONG, THE WOMAN WHO DARED TO STEP OUT OF THE HURT TO SELF-FREE]
A year after leaving my old “nest”, I stood in the middle of a small 40m² apartment in Cau Giay, watching my son – little Bong – sitting engrossed in drawing at the table. His hair was longer. His forehead was wide, his eyes were bright, his features were strangely similar to his father’s… But that didn’t soften my heart.
Because now, I understand: there are memories that should just be memories. Not because I forget, but because I learn to move on.
🛍️ Huong – the woman of the present
I am no longer the gentle girl who believes every word her husband says. I have become an independent woman – knowing how to manage my expenses, understanding my own worth, and most of all, knowing how to earn money through my own labor.
The online cosmetics store I opened now has more than 20 orders per day. I live stream, pack, and reply to inbox messages myself. Sometimes I work until 1-2 am, and I still feel happy. Because I know that every penny I earn is a brick to rebuild myself.
📞 Unanswered calls, anonymous messages
Minh still texted me regularly. Sometimes he asked about Bong, sometimes he sent money, sometimes he asked me for “a chance to get back together”. There were nights when I saw his number calling. But I didn’t pick up. Not because I was angry, but because I no longer belonged to that past .
I spent a night thinking, rereading old messages, going through the recordings in my head… then deleting everything.
One day, Minh sent me a recording: the sound of wind, cars, and him whispering:
“If you hadn’t betrayed me that day, would we still be family?”
I did not answer. Because for me, “if” I could not raise a child, nor could I save a deeply wounded woman.
💌 A letter to myself
On my 30th birthday, I sat down and wrote a letter to myself:
“Huong, you were hurt, you were scared, you wanted to disappear. But you didn’t disappear. You stood up. You started over. You don’t need anyone to help you fix your mistakes. Because you – you – are the one who saved your own life.”
I folded the letter and put it in my bedside drawer. And from that day on, I never cried again in the middle of the night.
📚 Growth comes from cracks
Once, Bong asked me:
“Mom, tomorrow I have a Literature exam. The topic is: A moment that made me grow up . What should I write?”
I laughed:
“Write about the day you see your mother stand up again. Because that is the day she truly grows up. And so will you.”
✨ The End: No One Can Save Me – Except Me
My current life is not rich. But peaceful .
I go to work, raise my children, and occasionally travel with single mothers. I no longer expect anyone to apologize, nor wait for anyone to come back. I do not take revenge. I do not forget. I choose to forgive – but to forgive to be free , not to make others feel relieved.
One afternoon, standing on the rooftop looking down at the city, I whispered a sentence that had taken me four years to utter:
“Thank you for betraying me. Thanks to that, I know: I don’t need anyone to be happy.”
