“She Was Called the Driver’s Son — Until Her Voice Fell Silent at the Gala”
I am Amina Reyes, and all my life, I have been walking a tightrope—between two different worlds.
My father, Arturo, was a driver for wealthy families in Manila. My mother was a seamstress—her fingers were almost worn out from working, just so that I could go to a good school. We lived in a small room behind the garage of the Vergara family—the family my father served for over twenty-five years.
I grew up watching the Vergara family’s luxurious life—parties with fire dancers, vacations in Paris, and gowns that cost more than a year’s rent. I don’t envy them. But sometimes, I also wonder what it feels like to be chosen, not just used.
That’s where I met Elias.
He is considered the “black sheep” of the Vergara family—smart, quiet, and uninterested in the family business. He was more interested in music and poetry than stocks and finance. We first met when he heard me singing while hanging out laundry in the garden.
“Your voice is like silk,” he said, surprising me.
I felt embarrassed and pulled away. “It’s just a pastime.”
But he didn’t let me go. As the months passed, our conversation deepened—about Chopin, about justice, about feeling out of place in the world I grew up in. He listened in a way no one else had.
He was the one who encouraged me to audition for a scholarship abroad. He helped me get into Juilliard. My scholarship was only partial—the rest of the expenses, he secretly paid for. I would only find out years later.
Six years passed. I had my own career as a singer, touring Europe and Asia. Elias, on the other hand, had turned a failing family charity into one of the most effective programs in the country.
We met again at a gala in Singapore—it was as if nothing had changed. He still looked at me like I was a miracle. Two years later, he proposed. Quietly. Privately. On a rooftop in Kyoto.
But his family… wasn’t happy.
To them, I was the “son of a driver.” A woman who smelled of soap and dreams. A woman who sang, not wearing pearls.
They agreed to host the engagement gala at their ancestral home in Tagaytay. I told Elias that I wasn’t comfortable, but he said, “I’m just here.” And I believed him.
I arrived on the night of the gala wearing a gold gown that my mother had sewn herself. I felt like a queen. But as soon as I walked in, I could feel the cold.
Some were watching, whispering. Some were forced smiles, some were openly judgmental. His aunt greeted me: “Oh, you look so pretty when you’re dressed up.” Another asked which hotel I was singing at.
Elias was busy—talking to guests, politicians, businessmen. I didn’t blame him, but I felt like I was alone.
Until his cousin Luciana approached me.
“There’s a change in the program,” she said, holding a clipboard. “The soprano has canceled. Elias said you were singing?”
“I was singing, but—”
“Perfect! You’re the only one who can sing. We’ve already arranged it.”
“No one asked if I wanted to,” I replied, my voice shaking.
“That’s okay! Just think of it as… thanking you.”
Thanking you.
I left, my hand shaking. I looked for Elias but he was busy with the Minister of Trade. When I returned to the ballroom, I heard the MC:
“A special performance from the bride-to-be—Amina Reyes!”
The spotlight was like a slap in the face.
I was momentarily stunned.
But I moved closer.
I didn’t sing what they expected. No safe ballad. No cutesy. I sang “Nessun Dorma”—an aria that demanded strength, courage, and presence. My voice echoed through the marble hall. The chandeliers shook. She wasn’t gentle. She wasn’t modest. She was thunder.
Then, silence.
Then, applause—at first one at a time, until it became a wave.
Elias approached the stage. He took the microphone.
“Excuse me,” he said, and everyone fell silent again.
“To those who thought Amina was here just to entertain—now you’ve seen true talent. This is no lounge act. She’s a world-class artist, a Juilliard graduate, and the woman I love.”
He looked at me.
“You don’t have to prove anything to anyone in this room. Especially not to them. Let’s go.”
We left, hand in hand.
That night, we went to a jazz bar where no one knew us. He ordered pancit, I sang with the house band. We danced in sneakers.
A week later, we moved to another country. A new life began—a life where my father visited freely, always welcoming me with pride, not pity.
When I’m asked how I got started, I just smile and say:
“There are times when you’re not expected—but you still give it your all. That’s where true success begins.”
