“She’s old, she only knows how to pee, she’s just busy at home” — Elderly Mother Kicked Out and Made to Sleep Near a Chicken Coop. Last Rainy Night, She Suddenly Disappeared… Two Months Later, the Whole Family Was Surprised by a Letter…
Grandma Belen — almost 80 years old — used to live with her youngest son, Renato , and his daughter-in-law, Lorna , in a cozy house in the middle of a village in Batangas .
He used to be an elementary school teacher — quiet, hardworking, and dedicated his entire life to his wife and children . But in his old age, he became a burden on his own home , which he had helped build.
Words That Penetrate:
“He’s old. No use anymore. He still has urine in his pants. He’s just busy!”
“He always has to cook raw because he doesn’t like salty food!”
“He can’t watch TV properly because he might wake up Mom!”
“It’s tiring, to be honest.”
Her son-in-law uttered these disrespectful words, right in front of Grandma Belen .
A Night of Heavy Rain
Grandma Belen was quiet.
He took the old mat , and his thin blanket. He moved to the backyard , next to the chicken coop , to that part of the yard that was damp, cold, and smelled of dirt.
She didn’t cry. But she sighed.
It was as if she had thrown all the bitterness in her heart into the wind.
The next morning… He was gone.
The mat is gone. The blanket is gone.
In the yard, only the footprints of slippers are left on the wet ground.
“Well, maybe he’ll go back to his relatives in Lucena.
That’s good. One mouth less.”
Lorna said — calmly, as if nothing had happened.
No one searched. No one reported.
It was as if the loss of a mother was not important.
Two Months Have Passed
While Grandpa Candido ‘s entire clan was gathering to discuss the inheritance of their ancestral land , a relative suddenly received a registered letter from a Home for the Aged in Cebu City — the Bahay Amuma Foundation .
Inside, there is an official notarized document , including a photo and fingerprint .
Document Content:
“I — Maria Isabel Cruz — have legal ownership of 400m² of land in the town of San Felipe, Batangas; a house that is currently for rent, and P1.3 million pesos in savings in a bank.”
“I hereby revoke the inheritance rights of my youngest son Renato and his wife Lorna, due to neglect and cruelty to an elderly mother. I formally donate all of my assets to the Bahay Amuma Foundation , to help more grandparents who need a real home — more than just a house without a family.”
Signature: Maria Isabel Cruz
Date: (Date and place of signing are recorded at the Home for the Aged)
Along with the letter, a picture of the old man:
Hair done, new cardigan on, smiling as she sits by a window in the sun . Bright. Peaceful.
Everyone was shocked.
Renato turned pale. Lorna sat up.
“Is… is Mom… still alive? Mom, how did you do this to us?”
No one answered. No one calmed down.
Grandpa Candido, the eldest in the family, clenched his jaw tightly , almost whispering:
“Mom is alive. But she no longer considers you family.”
Since that day, no one has gone to the backyard.
And in the village, the lesson quietly spread:
“Don’t wait for your parents to come out of the rain before you realize that you are the real orphan — at heart.”
