THE MIRACLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CANYON

Elara’s love for Matteo was as vast as the ocean and as deep as the stars in the sky. She loved so much the man who lifted her out of poverty, the prince who gave her a palace and a life she never dreamed of. At first, Matteo was a perfect gentleman. Gentle, thoughtful, and full of promises. He gave Elara everything—except for one thing that mattered most: loyalty.

Elara was a simple woman with a heart of gold. His weakness was his legs, which had been paralyzed by an accident in his youth. But that didn’t stop Matteo’s love, or so he thought. For Matteo, Elara’s disability at first is a symbol of her goodness; a proof to the world that he can love an “imperfect” woman. But as time went on and their fortunes grew, Matteo’s outlook gradually changed. His love turned into compassion, and compassion turned to annoyance.

Their mansion, once full of laughter and love, had become a cold prison for Elara. Matteo is always absent, busy with his “business”, which Elara later learns has a name—Cassandra.

Cassandra is the opposite of Elara. He was tall, slender, and had the confidence to stop traffic. He was a lawyer in Matteo’s firm, smart and ambitious. In him Matteo saw an “equal”, a trophy he could boast about to his partners without any blemishes. The love he withheld from Elara he poured out wholeheartedly on Cassandra.

The only light in Elara’s dark world is their five-year-old daughter, Luna. The moon is the sun, the moon, and the stars. A cheerful boy with his father’s eyes but with his mother’s heart. For Luna, Elara would do anything. He would put up with Matteo’s every harsh word and cold treatment, just to provide for his entire family.

But Matteo and Cassandra’s greed knows no bounds. A large portion of the family’s wealth is named after Elara, something Matteo did in the early years of their romance as a “sign of eternal love”. Now, that sign has become a thorn in their plans. Cassandrang wants to marry Matteo, but she doesn’t want to go through the costly and scandalous annulment process that will surely divide their accumulated wealth. One night, under the influence of alcohol and lust, a sinister plan was hatched.

“It was just an accident, dear,” Cassandra whispered to Matteo as she stroked his chest. “It was an unfortunate accident. A mother with a disability, tries to drive up the mountain with her son… and fell into the abyss. Tragedy. No one would doubt it.”

The poison in Cassandra’s words slowly spread through Matteo’s heart, killing any remaining strand of love for his wife and son. The thought that all the riches would belong to her, including Cassandra, became more weighing than conscience.

The next day, Matteo invited for a “family outing”. It was a surprise for Elaine and Elaine. Despite her husband’s coldness over the past few months, a glimmer of hope sprang up in Elara’s heart. That could be the beginning of their reunion. She put on her favorite dress and straightened Luna’s hair.

Matteo took them to a hidden place on top of a mountain, a place known as the “Waterfall of the Stars”. It is famous for its beautiful view of the whole city, especially at night. But that night, the beauty of the place was tainted by a hidden danger.

“It’s beautiful here, Daddy!” exclaimed Luna happily, running near the edge of the canyon, while Elara carefully pushed her wheelchair down the rocky path.

“Be careful, son,” Elara reminded, her smile as bright as the city lights below.

While Luna was busy chasing the flies, a shadow appeared from the darkness. Cassandra, dressed in black, her face serious and cold.

“What are you doing here?” asked Elaine, confused. The little hope in his heart was suddenly replaced by fear.

Cassandra did not answer. He just looked at Matthew, a look full of meaning. That’s when Elara understood it all. A “family outing” is a trap.

“Matteo, what does that mean?” asked Elara tremblingly, tears beginning to form in her eyes.

Matteo approached, his face devoid of emotion. “Please forgive me, Elizabeth. But it’s the easiest way.”

“What way? Matthew, please have mercy… Our Son…” He was pitiful.

Luna, sensing the tension, ran over to her mother and hugged her legs. “Mom, I’m scared.”

That sight—his mother’s fear—should have stirred Matteo’s heart. But his heart had turned to stone.

“It’s about time,” Cassandra said, her voice as sharp as a knife.

They approached at the same time. Matteo grabbed the handle of Elara’s wheelchair. For the last time, Elara looked into the eyes of the man she had once loved all her life, looking for even the slightest hint of mercy. But he saw nothing but a cold void.

“Don’t! “You’ve got to be careful!” cried Elaine.

But his screams vanished into the air. With a loud push, the wheelchair, with Elara and the tightly hugging Luna, tumbled into the darkness of the canyon. The last Elara heard were Matteo and Cassandra’s wicked screams, which slowly weakened as they fell, and her son’s deafening cry that seemed to wound his soul.

The downfall seems like an eternity. Elara hugged Luna tightly, turning her own body into a shield. Her last thoughts were not her own, but the salvation of her little angel. “I love you so much, my dear…” That was his last whisper before the darkness swallowed up his consciousness.

Matteo and Cassandra thought it was all over. They reported the “accident” to the police. They develop a story of tragedy: a crippled mother who tries to drive a special vehicle, loses control, and falls off a cliff. A lot of people were saddened, a lot of people were saddened. Matteo pretends to be a grieving husband and father, while Cassandra is by his side as a “supportive friend”. After a few months, as the news subsided, they began to plan for their future—a life built on lies and death.

But at the bottom of the cliff, a miracle occurred.

Elara and Luna’s fall was slowed by the thick branches and leaves of the trees on the edge of the canyon. Instead of crashing directly into the sharp rocks below, they hung onto a large Balete tree, its roots clinging tightly to the ground. Elara sustained multiple cuts and fractures, and lost consciousness. But Luna, protected by her mother’s embrace, had only a slight scratch.

For many hours, only the child’s cry could be heard in the silence of the forest.

At the foot of the mountain, in a small hut far from civilization, lived an old hermit named Lolo Kiko. He used to be a doctor in the city, but he gave up a chaotic life to live in peace with nature. His ears, swept away by the silence of the forest, heard a strange sound—a faint cry carried by the wind.

With his lamp and cane, Grandpa Kiko followed the sound. He climbed the treacherous slope of the canyon, guided by his knowledge in every corner of the mountain. And there, under the Balete tree, he found a sight that broke his heart: a bloodied and unconscious woman, and a crying child by his side.

She carefully picked up her mother and carried her to her cabin. He used all of his knowledge of medicine and herbs to treat Elara. Its bones were broken, the wounds were deep. For many days and nights, Elara was between life and death. In his dreams, he heard over and over again the screams of Matteo and Cassandra, and the crying of Luna. Those memories gave him a reason to fight.

Slowly, with Grandpa Kiko’s help and care, Elara began to heal. Her wounds healed. But the biggest miracle wasn’t just his recovery. One morning, as he was trying to sit up, he felt something he hadn’t felt in a long time—a twinkle in his legs.

Due to the severe fall, some nerves in his spine that had been strained from his previous accident appeared to have been partially “fixed”. At first, it was just a small glimpse. But with the help of the therapies and exercises taught by Grandpa Kiko, the kislot became movement. After months of relentless effort and determination, one day, in front of crying with joy Luna and Grandpa Kiko, Elara was once again on her own feet. Weak at first, shaking, but steady.

The paralyzed woman who had been pushed into the canyon was able to walk again.

During those months, as he grew physically stronger, his mood grew stronger as well. The pain and hatred he had previously felt was gradually replaced by a steadfast determination. He was no longer the weak Elara who could be trampled underfoot. The woman who rose from the abyss was a new creature. His mission was not to seek revenge. For him, revenge would only bring his level down. What he wanted was justice—and to get back the life his son had stolen from them.

“Are you ready, son?” asked Grandpa Kiko one day, watching Elara walk unaided through their little garden.

“Yes, Lolo. It’s time to confront them,” Elara replied, her voice calm but full of weight.

In the city, life for Matteo and Cassandra was perfect. Their business has grown. They are the new “power couple” of high society. Their wedding is coming up, a big celebration that everyone will be talking about. To them, Elara and Luna were just a distant memory, a dark secret that they had successfully buried in oblivion.

The night of their engagement party was a lavish event. The richest people in the city were there. Champagne flows, jewelry glitters, and laughter echoes inside the grand ballroom of a five-star hotel.

In the midst of the fun, Matteo stood on stage, microphone in hand, next to Cassandra who was smiling from ear to ear.

“Friends,” Matteo began, his voice full of pride. “I want to introduce you to the woman who rebuilt my broken heart, my future wife, Cassandra!”

The crowd applauded. But before Cassandra could speak, the large ballroom door slowly opened.

All eyes were glued to the door. Out of the darkness, a woman slowly walked in. She was dressed in a simple white dress, her long hair in a ponytail. Next to him was a little girl holding his hand tightly.

The music has stopped. The house was filled with swamps.

As the woman approached the light, Matteo’s face turned pale, as if he had seen a ghost. Cassandra stiffened in her place, her perfect smile fading.

The woman stood in the middle of the ballroom. Her eyes were fixed on Matthew.

“Hello, my dear?” said Elara, her voice clear and firm, echoing in a deafening silence. “Did you miss us?”

Luna, holding her mother’s hand, looked at Matteo. “Daddy?” the boy asked, his voice filled with wonder and pain.

That one word from the boy was like a knife that pierced the heart of everyone present. The “dead” child is alive. And the “dead” wife… He stood in front of them.

Matthew’s reaction was unmistakable. Surprise was replaced by fear. “No… It can’t! You’re dead!” he yelled, unable to contain himself.

With that admission, all the murmurs turned into screams of surprise. His words were an indirect admission of the crime he had committed.

Cassandra, who thinks faster, tries to save the situation. “Who are you? What nonsense is this? Security! Get this woman out!”

But it was too late. From behind Elara, several policemen came out, including Lolo Kiko, who served as a witness.

“Matteo Sandoval and Cassandra Reyes,” a police officer said, “we arrest you for attempted murder.”

The chaos began. Cell phone cameras began to flash. Matteo and Cassandra’s perfect night turned out to be a nightmare. As they were ushered into the police car, their faces were filled with defeat and despair. Matteo was screaming over and over that this wasn’t true, while Cassandra was just silent, her eyes filled with anger focused on Elara.

Elara remained standing in the middle of it all, hugging Luna. He didn’t feel any pain in their downfall. He felt a sense of peace. The fight is over. Justice is beginning to roll in.

The case became a national sensation. The story of Elara, the “miracle wife”, made all the headlines. His testimony, along with evidence found at the crime scene and Lolo Kiko’s account, was enough to sentence Matteo and Cassandra to life in prison. On the final day of the trial, as they were being brought out of court, their eyes met. In Matthew’s eyes, he saw remorse. In Cassandra’s eyes, she saw nothing but pure hatred. But it doesn’t matter to him anymore.

Elara chose not to take the treasure that Matteo had left behind. He has given away a large portion of it to charities, particularly those that help victims of domestic abuse and people with disabilities. He just took enough to start a simple life with Luna again.

They returned to the countryside, away from the noise and chaos of the city. They bought a small house with a large garden, where they could grow flowers and vegetables. Grandpa Kiko has become a part of their family, their grandfather who is full of love and wisdom.

One afternoon, as Elara watched Luna happily play in the garden, as the sun set and gave a golden hue to the surroundings, she felt an absolute peace. He lost a lot of people. He suffered the most pain and betrayal. But in the end, he got more. He found his own strength, his ability to stand up again—literally and figuratively.

He didn’t know what the future holds. The wounds in his heart were still there, but they weren’t as painful as they used to be. They serve as a reminder, not of pain, but of his resilience. A reminder that even when you are pushed to the deepest abyss, there is always hope. There is always a miracle that awaits—whether in the form of an old hermit, a healing of the body, or the unconditional love of a child.

Elara smiled. At last, he was free. And in the stillness of the setting sun, he knew this was the beginning of their real life—a life built not on wealth or lies, but on pure love and second chances.
