After 5 years of my husband’s death, I suddenly received 1 million pesos from him and was shocked by the truth behind it
Five years after my husband passed away, my mother-in-law came to my house in Quezon City on the anniversary of his death. She called me in to talk privately. After a moment of hesitation, my mother-in-law said that my husband had left me 1 million pesos under her name. She told me that if I wanted to do business or invest in anything, I could use this money.
The day my husband passed away, the world seemed to collapse before my eyes. This was the man who had loved and cared for me for many years. However, a serious illness took him away, leaving me alone with my young son.
Since living with him, I have always been comfortable with material things, so I unintentionally became somewhat dependent. Therefore, after losing my husband, I struggled to make ends meet. Raising my child alone, there were times when I felt like I couldn’t cope.
In the following months, I worked, raised my child, and faced many temptations from other men. They said they would take care of me and my child, but deep down I knew that no one was truly sincere. Even though many years had passed, my heart still belonged to him. Just like that, I steadfastly overcame difficulties, and my life with my child gradually stabilized.
Secret from my husband
Five years later, on the anniversary of my husband’s death, my mother-in-law suddenly revealed the truth. It turned out that before he passed away, my husband had opened a savings account. He told his mother: “If five years after my death, my wife is still raising the child alone and has not fallen, then give this money to her.”
I was stunned. Just like the conditions he left, for the past five years I have only focused on raising the child, taking care of my husband’s family, and not thinking about finding a new love.
Sadness
After my mother-in-law left, I sat there in a daze, feeling both sad and regretful. After living together for so many years, until the end of his life, my husband still did not completely believe that I loved him and our child with all my heart. He was afraid that after he died, I would abandon our child and quickly look for another man.
He did not know how hard my child and I had been living since he left. If I had this money at that time, wouldn’t my child and I have suffered less? But when I was strong enough to stand on my own, I received the money my husband left behind.
I could not refuse, but when I thought about it, my heart sank, and I felt extremely bitter.
Part 2: From Pain to Motivation
Important Decision
After several sleepless nights, I sat in front of my husband’s altar in our small house in Quezon City, looking at his portrait. Next to me was a savings book of 1 million pesos that my mother-in-law had just given me. Tears fell from my eyes, both resentful and grateful.
I told myself: “If you don’t trust me completely, I will prove it with my actions. I will use this money to build a future for our son.”
So I decided to open a small business in Manila.
The Early Days of Starting a Business
At first, I was confused about which direction to choose. But remembering the years after my husband passed away, I used to sell snacks at the market near my house to earn extra income. I realized that I had a knack for cooking.
I boldly rented a small kiosk near the university campus in Manila, opened a restaurant “Karinderya ni Aling Rosa” – named after my mother-in-law to express my gratitude to her. The restaurant serves cheap rice, traditional Filipino dishes: adobo, sinigang, tinola…
In the early days, I cooked, calculated the books, and ran to the counter to invite customers. There were days when I was exhausted, but seeing my son sitting at the corner of the table studying gave me more strength.
The results gradually came
After only half a year, my restaurant had a stable number of regular customers: students, office workers, even jeepney drivers who stopped by every morning.
The profit was not too big, but it was enough for me to pay the rent, raise my children, and save a little. In particular, I created jobs for two other single mothers in the area, in the same situation as me.
My son, now 10 years old, sometimes helps his mother wash dishes and clear tables. Every time I see my child so enthusiastic, I feel happy. I know I am teaching him an important lesson: even if we lose our support, we can still stand up for ourselves.
The new woman
Once, when I was calculating the bill for a customer, I heard them whisper:
“This shop owner was a widow before, but she still built a career. How admirable.”
I smiled, my heart filled with warmth. I was no longer just a widow living in nostalgia, but had become a strong woman, a resilient mother.
A solid support
One evening, my son looked up at me and whispered:
“Mom, I am so proud of you. I promise to study well so that in the future I can take care of you like you have taken care of me.”
I hugged him tightly, tears streaming down my face. I knew the journey ahead was still long, but my son and I could rely on each other.
With the money my husband left me, I not only built a restaurant, but also a new life. I became a solid support for my son – just like my husband used to be my support.
Part 3: Karinderya ni Aling Rosa – From a Street Corner in Manila to an Inspiration for Filipino Women
The Rice Shop Spreads
Three years after its opening, Karinderya ni Aling Rosa on a street corner in Manila is no longer just a simple rice shop. Regulars refer new customers, graduates still return, and office workers consider it their “second kitchen.”
With the profits I saved and a small loan from the bank, I opened another branch in Quezon City, then another in Cavite. Each one kept the same slogan hanging on the door:
“A place where women heal and rise again.”
Giving opportunities to those in similar situations
I don’t hire employees the conventional way. I look for single mothers, widows, or women who have been abandoned, like me. They learned how to manage books, how to communicate with customers, and even basic business skills while working.
A woman named Luz, who used to sell lottery tickets on the street, is now a branch manager in Cavite. A young girl named Maricel, who had to drop out of school because of an early pregnancy, can now support herself with a stable job at a rice shop.
They told me:
“You didn’t just give us jobs. You gave us the belief that there is still a place in life to start over.”
The spread
That year, a local newspaper published an article with the headline:
“From poor widow to rice shop owner – Inspiring woman in Manila.”
After the article, I was invited to participate in a panel discussion at the University of the Philippines. I told hundreds of students and young women:
“Happiness is not always complete. But failure or loss is not the end. If a woman like me can rise from suffering, then anyone can. The important thing is not to give up, for the children, for yourself.”
The whole audience was silent, then burst into applause.
A mother, a teacher, an inspiration
My son, now in high school, sometimes stands in the kitchen helping the staff. One time, he said to me:
“Mom, I am not only proud that you are my mother. I am proud that you are also a teacher, a sister, a friend to many women out there.”
Hearing him say that, I was moved to tears. I understood that my son not only saw me as a support, but also saw me as an example for him to learn how to live a kind and resilient life.
The journey is not over yet
Now, Karinderya ni Aling Rosa has three branches, with nearly 30 employees – most of whom are women who once thought they had no chance. I know the journey is still long, but I believe I have turned the money my husband left me into a new life, not only for me and my children, but for many other families.
I stood in front of the door of the first rice shop in Manila, looking at the slogan faded by the sun and wind, whispering to myself:
“Honey, do you see? I did not fall. I stood up, and pulled many other women to stand up with me. This is how I love you, and also how I love this life.”
