My father, Mang Ernesto, spent his whole life farming in Batangas, saving every single peso. He called it his “retirement savings” – money to live on in peace in his old age.
But two years ago, when my sister-in-law Marissa fell into huge debt after a failed business, Father emptied his entire savings to bail her out.
We all thought she would be grateful, that she would take care of Father as if he were her own. But…
The day Father was admitted to the hospital, lying motionless on a stark white bed, Marissa walked in. No tears, no sorrow – just a cold face, her arms folded across her chest:
– “Father… the money is all gone. I can’t give anything more.”
The Revelation
The hospital room fell silent. Mother broke down crying, my older brother Rommel turned red with anger, and I stood frozen, unable to believe what I was hearing.
Father said nothing. His deep-set eyes looked into the distance. Then suddenly, with his trembling hand, he pointed weakly toward the window.
We all turned. There, an old metal box sat slightly open. My heart pounded as I stepped closer.
Inside, neatly stacked, were the land titles of our family property and a pile of loan agreements with signatures and bright red seals.
We were stunned. It turned out Father hadn’t only given money in cash—he had also personally guaranteed Marissa’s massive debts. If she didn’t pay, the ancestral house and rice fields – the legacy of generations – would all be seized.
The Crushing Blow
Mother fell to her knees, begging Marissa to reconsider. Rommel pleaded desperately. I grabbed her hand, trembling.
But Marissa’s face remained cold as stone. Her voice was sharp as a knife:
– “You don’t need to beg. I’ve already transferred the titles to someone else. It’s too late.”
The room collapsed into despair. Father’s face flushed. He coughed violently, a stream of blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
Mother screamed. I rushed to hold him. But in Father’s fading eyes, what shone most was not physical pain – it was the torment of betrayal.
The Shocking Secret
He struggled to draw a breath, whispering broken words:
– “Children… all of this… it wasn’t an accident… it was a trap…”
His halting words froze us in place. Rommel and I exchanged terrified glances, our hearts pounding like war drums.
Who had orchestrated all this?
Who was the true mastermind behind the debts?
Father’s eyes welled with tears, then locked onto someone we had never suspected.
It wasn’t an outsider.
It was a member of our own family – the very one we had trusted all along
Part 2: The Unmasking of the Traitor
Father’s Final Gaze
In the cold hospital room, Mang Ernesto’s weak eyes fixated on one person. We turned to follow his gaze… and froze in shock.
The one Father was pointing at was none other than Kuya Rommel – my own elder brother.
Nanay Lourdes nearly collapsed:
– “Rommel… anak… tell me it isn’t true?”
But Rommel stood stiff, sweat forming on his forehead, his eyes refusing to meet ours.
The Painful Truth
Father struggled to speak, his voice trembling but clear:
– “All… the documents… Marissa didn’t force me. She was only used… But the true mastermind… is Rommel.”
The room spun. My knees trembled.
– “Kuya? You… you were behind this?” I whispered.
Rommel stayed silent for a moment. Then, suddenly, he sneered, his eyes burning with resentment:
– “Yes. It’s me! All my life, you were Father’s favorite, the one he always praised. And me? Always second best. But now… every property, every piece of land, is in my name. And no one can take it away from me!”
A Mother’s Anguish
Nanay cried out, clutching Rommel’s hand:
– “My son, how could you do this to your own father? To your own family?”
Rommel pushed her hand away coldly:
– “Nanay, I’m done living in the shadows. From now on, I decide the fate of this family. If you don’t accept it, then all of you… get out of this land!”
Nanay collapsed, sobbing uncontrollably. I rushed to hold her, my chest tearing apart.
The Father’s Collapse
Hearing those words, Father shook violently, like a dying flame struck by wind. He coughed fiercely, blood gushing from his mouth.
He clutched my hand tightly, whispering with his last strength:
– “Son… remember… don’t let… this family… fall into the hands of greed…”
And with that, his head slumped against the pillow. The room erupted with cries of despair.
The Beginning of the Real Battle
Rommel looked at Father’s lifeless body, not a single tear falling. Instead, he smirked:
– “Now, no one can stop me. All the land titles… are already under my name.”
Marissa stepped forward to stand beside Rommel, her eyes triumphant. So it was true—this betrayal had been their game all along.
I held onto Nanay as she wept bitterly, my own heart shattering. But amid the despair, a vow burned within me:
“Rommel… if you’ve wasted Father’s blood and sweat, if you’ve chosen greed… then I will be your enemy. I will not let the De la Cruz name be destroyed.”
Cliffhanger
Outside the hospital window, Manila’s night lights glimmered against the glass. A family shattered by greed, its darkest truth exposed.
But this was only the beginning. The fight to reclaim justice, to restore the honor of the De la Cruz family… was just about to begin.
