My 70-Year-Old Father-in-Law Hired a Young Maid. A Year Later, He Wanted to Marry Her… and Left Us All a Shocking Farewell.
My father-in-law, Tatay Ernesto, turned 70 last year. After Nanay Luz passed away, he had been living alone in his house in the outskirts of Tagaytay. Concerned about his well-being, my husband and I decided to hire a live-in helper — a young woman named Diem, 29, from the Visayas region. She was quick on her feet, spoke sweetly, and seemed respectful.
At first, I thought, “As long as she takes care of Tatay and doesn’t cause trouble, I’m okay with her.”
But just a few months in, we noticed something strange. Diem slowly shifted from being just “the helper” to Tatay’s constant companion. She was no longer serving meals quietly — she was sitting beside him, laughing, talking, holding his arm while walking in the garden. It felt… too close.
Exactly one year later, Tatay made an announcement during Sunday lunch:
“I’m marrying Diem. She’s carrying my child. If any of you oppose, you’ll regret it when I’m gone!”
The entire table fell into stunned silence.
My sister-in-law burst into tears.
My husband slammed the table in disbelief.
No one could believe it. A young helper — half his age — now pregnant and about to be married to our aging father? To us, it screamed gold digger. A manipulative trap targeting an old man who was lonely and vulnerable.
We tried everything to stop him. We begged, reasoned, even suggested that he might be mistaken.
But Tatay was adamant. A month later, he insisted on holding the wedding in the backyard.
And that’s when it happened.
As the family reluctantly gathered in the garden to witness the absurdity… Tatay collapsed. Right there on the lawn, in front of everyone.
He was rushed to the hospital, but a week later, he passed away.
We were devastated.
Until the lawyer arrived.
Tatay had written a will.
It was handwritten, shaky, but clear:
“All assets to be divided equally among my children. Except the house I currently live in — this I leave to Diem and her child, as a wedding gift I never got to give.”
We were speechless.
Heartbroken.
Conflicted.
And we thought that was the worst of it.
But then… came the final blow.
A few days later, Diem went to the local civil registrar to process paperwork for the baby. That’s when she quietly handed over a DNA test result — one that none of us were expecting.
The baby wasn’t Tatay’s.
Not even biologically close.
It belonged to another man entirely.
Diem had lied.
She had planned this.
After learning about Tatay’s wealth and loneliness, she faked a pregnancy to earn his affection. She told him he was the father — and the idea thrilled him.
But what none of us knew was this:
Tatay had been diagnosed infertile years ago, a complication from his prostate surgery.
We found the old medical report hidden in his drawer — still kept, still folded.
He knew.
He knew he couldn’t father a child.
But he never said a word.
He chose silence.
He chose belief — not in the lie, but in the illusion.
Perhaps he knew Diem was lying.
Perhaps he didn’t care.
Perhaps, after decades of living for his children, losing his wife, and watching his house grow quieter each year… he just wanted to feel alive. To pretend, just once more, that he was a husband again. A father-to-be again.
As I stood there, holding the DNA result in one hand and his old medical record in the other… the anger I felt toward Diem faded. All I could feel was sorrow.
Sorrow for a man who spent his life caring for others, only to die chasing a love that may have never been real… but was real enough for him.
Sometimes, the deepest betrayal isn’t when someone lies to us — it’s when we lie to ourselves just to feel loved.
And sometimes…
That’s the only thing keeping someone alive.
