Ang Ina na May Isang Kamay at ang Panayam sa Maynila
Early in the morning, while Maynila was still half asleep, the first rays of sunlight pierced through the mist. Maria, a 32-year-old woman, carried her three-year-old child out of her cramped rented room in Quezon City.
The child – Paolo – clung tightly to her mother’s neck, his big, round eyes still sleepy. Maria gently pulled the cloth bag with her other hand, her heart heavy. Today, she was going for a job interview – an opportunity she had been pondering for days. But with her physical disability: she had lost her right arm in a jeepney accident last year, she knew the road ahead would not be smooth.
Sa Harap ng Kumpanya
De Vera & Co. Accounting Services is located in a newly built high-rise building in the Makati Business District. When Maria arrived, her face was covered in sweat, her simple white blouse slightly wrinkled. She sat quietly in the reception area, coaxing her son not to make any noise.
The eyes of the other candidates, from the receptionist to a few staff members passing by, occasionally glanced at her – curious and concerned. A woman missing an arm, carrying a child to an interview – in their eyes, it was truly not “normal”.
The loudspeaker rang out:
– “Number 17, pasok na po kayo sa interview room.”
Maria took a deep breath, adjusting her shirt. Her son clung to her shirt, his eyes bewildered. She carried him in after her.
Ang Tanong ng mga Nasa Panel
In the interview room, three men in barong tagalog sat behind a large table. The man in the middle, in his forties, had a cold face – it was Mr. Ramon De Vera, the recruitment director.
When Maria walked in, holding her child in one hand and a bag in the other, all three judges were slightly surprised. Mr. Ramon frowned:
– “Mrs. Maria… what are you looking for in a job interview? What are you looking for?”
Maria politely said:
– “Opo, sir. Pasensya na po, wala akong choice ngayon. Wala pong magbabantay kay Paolo, pero sisiguraduhin ko na hindi siya makakaistorbo.”
A man flipped through the files, then frowned:
– “Graduate ka ng UP Diliman, may 6 years na experience bilang head accountant… pero sa conndisyon mo ngayon, sa tingin mo ba kaya mo pa?”
A glance slid down to the empty sleeve. The atmosphere fell.
Paolo sensed the tension, hugging his mother tighter.
Ang Sagot ni Maria
Maria pursed her lips, her other hand tightening the strap of her bag. Then she raised her head, her voice quiet but firm:
– “Sir, nawala po ang isang kamay ko, pero hindi ang kakayahan, hindi ang determinasyon. Sa anim na taon kong karanasan, ako po ang nag-manage ng financial reports, client negotiations, at HR team. Lahat ng iyon natapos ko dahil nagtrabaho ako nang doble sa normal.”
All three people fell silent.
Mr. Ramon crossed his arms and said harshly:
– “Kung ganoon… bakit mo isinama ang bata? Paano kung sa trabaho, lagi kang naaabala?”
Maria bent down to look at her child, then gently smoothed the baby’s hair.
There was silence in the room. Mr. Ramon put down his pen, his eyes wavered. In a moment, he remembered the image of his mother from the past – also raising his brothers alone.
He sighed, then nodded:
– “Okay. Bibigyan kita ng one-month trial. Kapag maayos ang trabaho mo, magiging regular ka with full benefits.”
Maria choked up:
– “Maraming salamat po. Hindi ko po sasayangin ang tiwala ninyo.”
Paolo suddenly burst out laughing, clapping his hands as if congratulating. The whole council also laughed, the atmosphere suddenly lightened.
Ang Paglabas
That day, Maria left the De Vera & Co. building with a slight smile on her lips. Along Ayala Avenue, the bright sunlight shone through the tall buildings, illuminating the small mother and son.
Maria hugged her son tightly, her heart filled with hope.
The other hand – calloused from hard work – now held the small future, bravely moving forward, defying all prejudices.
Part 2: Ang Pagsubok sa Bagong Trabaho
Ang Araw ng Pagsisimula
On the first morning at De Vera & Co. Accounting Services, Maria walked into the office in a well-washed old blouse, her hair neatly tied in a bun. She was filled with hope and anxiety.
The eyes of her colleagues paused briefly at her empty sleeve. A murmur arose:
“Siya ba ‘yung single mom na may isang kamay lang?”
“Paano siya magta-type ng reports?”
“Baka sagabal pa siya kaysa tulong.”
Maria heard everything, but she just smiled, tightened her bag, and went to work.
Ang Mga Hadlang
On the first day, the team leader gave Maria a thick file, asking her to complete the financial report in 2 days. A colleague whispered:
“Kaya ba niya ‘yan? Kahit ako hirap sa deadline na ‘yan.”
Maria sat down and started working. One hand typed on the keyboard, the other hand flipped through the papers. At first, she was slow, but she had prepared: she had installed software that supported shortcut keys and had practiced typing with one hand for a long time.
The shift was long, the clock showed 9 pm, most of her colleagues had gone home, only Maria’s desk lamp remained. She bit her lips, her eyes were red, but she still persisted in completing each number.
Ang Pagbabago
Two days later, the report was submitted. The team leader was surprised:
“Ang linis ng trabaho mo. Walang mali, lahat nakaayos.”
Her colleagues were stunned. They did not believe that with one hand, Maria could do it faster and more accurately than many people in the room.
Gradually, every time the company encountered difficulties with complicated figures, it was Maria who discovered the errors, corrected them, and came up with solutions. A colleague who was always sneering had to exclaim:
– “Grabe… akala ko pabigat siya, pero siya pala ang pinakamasipag at pinaka-maaasahan dito.”
Ang Sandali ng Pagkilala
At a staff meeting, Mr. Ramon – the recruitment director – suddenly announced:
– “I want to recognize someone who proved that determination beats limitation. Maria, you have exceeded expectations.”
The whole room applauded. Maria’s eyes were red, she stood up and bowed her head in gratitude. Paolo – a three-year-old boy – who was then being carried in by Ricardo, the building security guard, to play, suddenly ran to hug his mother:
– “Mama, proud ako sa’yo!”
The whole office burst into laughter, many people secretly wiped away their tears.
Ang Pagbabago ng Pananaw
From that day on, the look given to Maria was different: no longer pity, no longer doubt, but respect.
A colleague whispered:
“She’s not a victim… she’s an inspiration.”
In Maria’s heart, for the first time since the accident, she felt truly standing firm, not because of pity, but because of her own ability and determination.
