Just After Becoming Department Head, My Son-in-Law Kicked Out His In-Laws—The Ending Shocked Everyone
Mang Ernesto, now in his early sixties, walked with a slight stoop. His hair had turned grey over the years, worn down by a lifetime of hard labor as a construction worker. Every peso he earned was saved for his daughter—Lina—his only child. He wanted her to have the education he never had.
After finishing her accounting course at a college in Batangas, Lina found work in the city. It was there that she met Marco, an IT technician in the same company. On the day he was introduced to her parents, Marco bowed respectfully, saying all the right words and promising to love Lina forever.
Their wedding was simple. Afterwards, Lina and Marco moved to Metro Manila. They stayed in a cramped boarding house.
Seeing their struggles, Mang Ernesto and his wife, Aling Mercy, made a difficult decision: they sold their last piece of farmland and gave ₱300,000 to Marco as a down payment for a small condo.
“It’s not much,” Mang Ernesto said, “but we hope it gives you a better start.”
Marco accepted the money with tears and endless thanks.
Two years later, Lina gave birth to baby Migs. Mang Ernesto and Aling Mercy moved to the city to help. Mang Ernesto would bring Migs to daycare every morning, while Aling Mercy cooked, did laundry, and kept the condo clean.
Meanwhile, Marco got promoted to IT Department Head. His salary doubled, and friends praised how successful he had become.
But with his new title came a new attitude.
Marco no longer greeted his in-laws. He glued himself to his phone when he came home, and often scowled when he saw Aling Mercy preparing tinola or tuyo in the kitchen. He hated the smell. Hated the sight of old people in his modern condo.
Then one evening, he cleared his throat and said to Lina:
“I think… it’s time your parents went back to the province.”
Lina stared at him, stunned.
“But they sold their land for this condo. This home exists because of them.”
Marco replied coldly:
“I paid the mortgage. The title’s under my name. I can’t have my coworkers visiting and seeing old folks from the bukid here. It’s embarrassing.”
In the kitchen, Mang Ernesto heard everything. His hand trembled. Beside him, Aling Mercy wiped her silent tears.
They packed quietly that night. Before leaving, Mang Ernesto kissed baby Migs on the forehead one last time.
Lina stood at the door, tears in her eyes. But she didn’t speak.
She didn’t dare defy her husband.
One Week Later… Karma Walks In Wearing a White Shirt
That Friday, Marco came home pale-faced. He had just been summoned by the company’s CEO.
He had been suspended.
A major systems failure under his project caused massive financial losses. The board was furious.
To salvage the disaster, the company brought in a special adviser — an IT expert with decades of experience.
When Marco entered the conference room… his knees buckled.
Sitting at the head of the table was Ernesto Cruz — wearing a white barong, his back straight, his silver hair combed neatly. Calm. Dignified.
The CEO stood and said:
“Let me introduce Engineer Ernesto Cruz, our new technical adviser. He was one of the earliest pioneers of systems architecture in Southern Luzon. He’s here to oversee recovery.”
Marco couldn’t speak. He lowered his head, sweat dripping from his temples.
Mang Ernesto looked at him for a long moment, then said gently:
“In work, and in life, integrity matters, hijo. We rise not just by skill, but by respect.”
The meeting ended. As Mang Ernesto walked past Marco, he paused for a second.
“A home can survive without in-laws… but a man without values? He’ll never stand tall.”
Marco couldn’t answer. His lips trembled.
That afternoon, he submitted his resignation letter.
He had lost his position, his pride—and worst of all, the trust of the very people who once gave him everything.
Moral of the Story
Don’t ever forget the hands that lifted you when you had nothing.
Because someday… they might be the same hands that you’ll find reaching down to save you—again.
But whether or not they’ll reach again… depends on what you did the first time
The Apology That Came Too Late
Three days after submitting his resignation, Marco still did not dare to return to Batangas — where he and his wife had once chased Ernesto and Mercy away.
He lay in his apartment — once warm, now cold and empty.
Lina was silent, not scolding, not complaining. She just took care of the children, quietly packing up. But her eyes — full of disappointment — stabbed his heart.
“Lina… I made a mistake,” Marco said one evening, his voice trembling.
“You think saying that now will fix everything?” she asked, not looking at him.
He bowed his head.
“Please. Let me at least apologize to your parents.”
The Return to Batangas
A week later, Marco drove his wife and children back to their hometown. He held a basket of fruits and sweets — not much, but filled with love.
Mr. Ernesto’s small house was nestled among the coconut trees. Marco got out of the car, his heart pounding.
Mr. Ernesto was pruning bonsai trees in the yard. Seeing Marco, he raised his head, his eyes cold but calm.
“Engineer Cruz…,” Marco said, his voice as soft as the wind. “Pa…”
Mr. Ernesto did not respond.
“I came… to say sorry. I let pride blind me. I forgot everything you and Ma Mercy did for us.”
A long time later, he spoke:
“When you kicked us out, I didn’t feel angry. I felt… regret. For believing you’d be a good man to my daughter.”
“I want to make things right, Sir,” Marco said, choking up. “Not for a job. But for my family.”
Part 3: Lina’s Choice
That evening, in the small kitchen, Mang Ernesto sat drinking tea with Aling Mercy, Lina, and Marco.
No one talked about the past. But everyone understood, the wound had not healed.
“I’ll leave it up to Lina,” Ernesto said. “She’s the one you hurt the most.”
Lina looked at her husband. Years of love, sacrifice, and suffering — all of them played back in her mind.
“You hurt not just my parents, but my trust,” she said. “I loved you through your worst. But when they needed you, you chose pride.”
Marco bowed his head, saying nothing.
Lina was silent for a moment, then continued:
“If you truly want to change, prove it. Not by words — but by actions.”
“How?” Marco asked.
“You gave up on your dignity when you chose your ego. Now start again — not as a husband, but as a son-in-law who still owes a debt.”
Mang Ernesto nodded.
“There’s a barangay IT project needing volunteers. No pay. Hard work. They need someone to teach students basic coding.”
Marco looked at him. Nodded. “I’ll do it.”
Six Months Later
Marco became a volunteer for a community IT project in Batangas. Teaching middle school students, fixing computers for schools, working with teachers without getting paid.
Ernesto watched from afar. Gradually, he stopped being suspicious.
One afternoon, he put his hand on Marco’s shoulder and said:
“You’ve done well, hijo. Let’s go home.”
Marco turned his head, his eyes red.
“Can I?”
“Ask Lina,” he smiled softly.
That evening, Lina went to the front gate. Marco was sweeping the yard.
“Are you ready?” she asked.
“For what?”
“To rebuild. From zero.”
Marco nodded. “With all my heart.”
Lina smiled. It was the first time in months that she had given him a chance — not because of the past, but because he had humbled himself and made amends.
