Taguig City, Philippines —
What was supposed to be a joyous homecoming turned into a devastating nightmare for an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) who returned to the Philippines only to witness the ruins of his hard-earned dream — his newly built house, reduced to ashes. Even worse? The prime suspect is someone he once called “Tito.”

Years of Sacrifice — All for Nothing?

Jerwin Santos, 30, had worked tirelessly as a seafarer for almost 8 years. He sailed across oceans, missed countless holidays, and endured homesickness to save enough money to build a modest but beautiful home for his family in Taguig.

Just last year, construction was completed. It was a house painted in soft yellow and accented with red roofing — his proud symbol of sacrifice and success.

“I didn’t buy cars, I didn’t splurge. I just wanted a house for my parents to live in peacefully,” Jerwin once said in a past interview with a recruitment agency.

A Welcome Turned to Horror

But when Jerwin landed at NAIA and arrived in Taguig last week, he didn’t find balloons or hugs.

Instead, he found crime scene tape and a crowd of neighbors whispering.

The house was gone — burned to the ground.

“I froze,” Jerwin told reporters. “I thought I had the wrong address. Then I saw the broken gate… and the blackened rubble.”

What was more shocking was what came next.

Suspect: A Family Betrayal

According to investigators, witnesses had seen a man lurking around the house days before the fire. CCTV footage from a nearby sari-sari store allegedly captured a man carrying a plastic container and lighting something at the back of the property.

When the footage was enhanced, it reportedly revealed the face of Eduardo “Mang Edong” Rivera, a relative from Jerwin’s mother’s side — someone who once helped supervise the house’s construction.

The police have since named him as the primary suspect.

Motive? Jealousy and Debt

Barangay officials shared that Mang Edong had allegedly asked Jerwin for a loan months ago to pay off gambling debts, but Jerwin refused.

“He changed after that,” one resident said. “We heard him say things like, ‘Kahit anong gawin mo, hindi mo madadala ‘yang yaman mo.’”

(No matter what you do, you won’t keep that wealth forever.)

While investigators are still gathering evidence, the suspicion of arson driven by envy is the leading theory.

A Dream Turned to Ashes

The once-proud OFW now finds himself homeless in his own homeland, sleeping at a relative’s house while he fights for justice.

“I don’t care about the money anymore. I just want the truth to come out,” Jerwin said, eyes swollen from tears. “I worked so hard for that house. Not just for me, but for my parents… and someone I trusted destroyed it all.”

Community Cries for Justice

Local residents have rallied behind Jerwin, calling for a full investigation.

“This isn’t just property damage. This is betrayal. This is emotional murder,” said Barangay Chairman Lorenzo.

Donations have started to pour in from fellow OFWs who were moved by Jerwin’s story. “This could happen to any of us,” one donor wrote.

What Happens Next?

As of now, authorities are still searching for Mang Edong, who allegedly fled town after the incident. A warrant for his arrest is expected within the week.

In the meantime, Jerwin vows not to give up.

“I may have lost a house,” he says, “but I won’t lose my dignity.
