The Philippine music scene has been shaken recently after a sensitive piece of information involving former legendary Eraserheads member Marcos Adoro was circulated on social media and the media. Under pressure from the public and fans, the band’s leader and lead vocalist Ely Buendia has officially spoken out to clarify his personal views and express his stance on the matter.
The incident began when a post went viral online claiming that Marcos Adoro had engaged in inappropriate behavior with a young individual. Although the identity of the person involved was not made public, the allegations have sparked a wave of harsh criticism from the public, especially within the music community that has been loyal to the Eraserheads for decades.
Ely Buendia, who has always maintained a low profile and rarely commented on his former bandmate’s personal life, could not keep quiet this time. In a post on his personal platform, he shared:
I am shocked and deeply disappointed to learn of the serious allegations against a long-time colleague of mine. I absolutely do not support any unethical or illegal behavior, especially when it involves the vulnerable. Justice must be served, and the voices of victims must be heard.”
Ely’s statement received widespread support from the online community, with many praising him for his clarity and decisive stance, and hoping that other artists would also speak up to protect justice and safety for everyone in the entertainment industry.
Eraserheads is one of the most iconic bands in the Philippines, with a series of songs such as *Ang Huling El Bimbo*, *With a Smile*, and *Magasin* becoming part of the memories of many generations. However, the personal scandals of some members after their peak are somewhat overshadowing their halo.
Critics and cultural observers say that while Eraserheads will forever be legendary in the hearts of fans, the current time needs to face reality: Artists are also human, and they cannot be exempted from responsibility for their deviant behavior.
As of now, Marcos Adoro has not made an official statement in response to the allegations. Meanwhile, many advocacy groups and child rights organizations are calling for a full investigation by the authorities.
Artists, especially those who worked with Marcos, are facing a moral test. Will they choose to remain silent, or speak out to contribute to building a safer and healthier artistic environment?
Ely Buendia threatens to boycott Eraserheads reunion over Marcus Adoro ‘abuse’ issue
Eraserheads vocalist Ely Buendia’s camp has explained why they allowed controversial guitarist Marcus Adoro to join their upcoming December concert — this amid allegations that the latter “beat up” his son and ex-partner.
Syd Hartha and Barbara Ruaro spoke out again on Monday about the abuse Adoro allegedly suffered at the hands of following news that the ’90s OPM icon would be holding a reunion concert. They also thanked the public for not forgetting what happened.
“One of Ely’s non-negotiable conditions prior to signing was precisely that Marcus resolve his issues otherwise Ely would not work with him,” said Diane Ventura, Buendia’s manager, in an interview with ANCX published Wednesday.
“This was promised by Marcus’ management which was why we even reconsidered.”
While many were happy with the return to the stage of one of the most popular Filipino rock bands of the past decade, many were also disappointed with the silence of the Eraserheads members regarding the issue of their band.
Some netizens accused the remaining three members of E-Heads of being “enablers” or acquiescent.
Their drummer Raimund Marasigan only gave his opinion on the issue on Monday and why he did not post his response on social media, this while hoping that the problem will be resolved on all sides.
“To call Ely an enabler is categorically false and absurd. We do not condone abuse that is absolute. We acknowledge the pain and suffering of the parties involved and we seek accountability,” Ventura said.
“However, we will do what we can to encourage peace, resolution and will never get in the way of possible reconciliation or second chances between families. We are hoping for good to come out of this.”
It can be recalled that in 2019, Syd shared that Marcus allegedly banged his head against a wall in front of other people. He also posted on his Facebook about how his father verbally abused him.
At the same time, Ruaro posted several photos of his bruises, which he said were the result of domestic violence or mistreatment by the person he loved. It was only in July of this year that Adoro hinted that the possibility of Eraserheads returning to the stage was “just around the corner.”
That same month, he launched Eraserheads’ NFT gallery.
The concert is still going on on December 22 as this news is being written. The group’s bassist, Buddy Zabala, has remained silent about the issue to this day.
