Mother of the Groom Shouts: “She Got Pregnant Before Marriage? Let Her Walk to the Altar Herself!” – But What the Bride’s Father Did Left the Groom’s Family Ashamed for Life…
That morning, in a narrow alleyway on the outskirts of Tagaytay, the bride’s family had everything set. Tables, chairs, a lavender wedding tent adorned with balloons—it was all ready. Inside the house, Angela, the bride, sat quietly in her room, her hands trembling as they brushed the folds of her white wedding dress. Her four-month baby bump was unmistakable, and it made her too ashamed to step outside and greet the guests. Her face was pale, her eyes swollen from crying all night.
Outside, the groom’s side had just arrived. Rafael, the groom, stepped out in a black suit, hands in his pockets, face tight with tension. His mother, Aling Felisa, got out of the car, lifted her chin toward the wedding setup, and shouted:
“Where’s the girl’s father? Call him—I need to speak with him!”
Mang Ernesto, Angela’s father, hurried out and respectfully bowed.
“Good morning, please come inside and have some refreshments.”
But Aling Felisa snapped:
“Forget the refreshments. Let me make this clear: your daughter got pregnant before marriage—she’s brought shame to my family. If she wants to get married today, she better walk out here herself. We will not fetch a disgraceful daughter-in-law like that.”
Her voice echoed through the courtyard. The guests fell silent. The only sound was the wind rustling the wedding backdrop. Inside the house, Angela heard everything and burst into tears. Her mother rushed to hug her, while her father stood frozen outside, fists clenched.
The groom’s entourage stood in a neat line, eyes filled with judgment. Aling Felisa turned to her son:
“Rafael, what are you doing? Tell her to come out. If she wants this wedding, she must kneel and beg. Only then will I allow her into our family.”
Rafael said nothing. He just looked down. Mang Ernesto glanced at his daughter, then at her swollen belly. He sighed deeply. Angela had always been obedient, a good child. After high school, she went to work at a factory in Cavite, where she met Rafael. She fell hard. When she got pregnant, the groom’s family agreed to marry—but now, they showed their true colors.
A few moments later, while whispers swirled among the guests, Mang Ernesto returned. In his hands was the land title—the only land he owned. He walked straight up to Aling Felisa, his voice shaky but firm:
“This is the land title of our home. I’m giving it to my daughter as her dowry. And this…”
He turned to Rafael, pulled out a wad of crumpled small bills from his shirt pocket—barely a few hundred pesos—and laid them on the ceremonial table:
“This is the wedding offering. If you all look down on my daughter because she got pregnant before marriage, then let’s cancel this wedding. I don’t need to force her into a family that disrespects her. Please leave.”
Gasps spread across the crowd. Aling Felisa’s face turned beet red with rage and embarrassment. Rafael went pale and rushed forward to stop his future father-in-law, but Mang Ernesto had already turned back toward the house. He hugged Angela and whispered:
“Let’s go back to San Pablo, to our province. You don’t have to bow to anyone, anak. I will take care of you and the baby.”
Angela sobbed and clung to her father. Her mother cried loudly as well. Outside, the groom’s family stood awkwardly. Suddenly, Rafael dropped to his knees in front of his mother:
“Please, Mom. Don’t do this. I love Angela. If you don’t let us marry, I’ll leave home.”
Aling Felisa yanked her son’s arm:
“Have you lost your mind? That girl has no job, no house, she’s pregnant! She’s a disgrace to us!”
But Rafael didn’t budge. Kneeling, his shoulders trembled. Angela watched, her heart breaking. She stepped out and spoke in a hoarse voice:
“Rafael, stand up. I don’t want a wedding full of humiliation. I will raise this child on my own.”
She took off her veil, placed it in Rafael’s hands, and turned back into the house. Guests murmured—some with pity, others furious at the groom’s side.
That afternoon, the wedding decorations were taken down. Under the pouring rain, Angela helped her parents pack away the chairs. Soaked, she didn’t cry anymore. In her heart, only one thing remained:
“I will raise my child with dignity. I will teach them never to bow their head before anyone who disrespects them.”
A month later, people saw a thin, exhausted Rafael standing at Angela’s gate. He clutched a travel bag, silently listening to the kicks of his unborn child inside her womb. Tears rolled down his face.
But Angela didn’t open the door.
She had chosen her own path. A hard one—but at least, it was a path free from shame and pity. A path of strength, of dignity, and of love
