The poor boy let the strange girl go home to sleep for a night and what happened that night made him stunned
At noon, the sun was 40 degrees, in the middle of a deserted village road, a girl in a red dress pulled a suitcase and stood silently…
At noon, the countryside in Tarlac was as hot as fire, the red dirt road was cracked, dust rose up every time a car passed by. In the middle of the deserted road, there was no shade, only a dry acacia tree stood alone on the side of the road, almost all its leaves had fallen, silently enduring the heat of the nearly 40 degrees sun.
Under that small shade, a girl in a tight red dress stood silently, pulling a silver suitcase, wearing sunglasses, her eyes looking far away. The loud engine noise of a dilapidated motorbike broke the silence. Miguel, a 27-year-old man, thin, sunburned, his faded shirt soaked with sweat, stopped his motorbike.
Looking at the strange girl in the middle of the field, he frowned. In a poor rural area like the San Felipe barrio, this scene was unusual. He put down his stand, got off, and hesitantly asked:
Miss, where are you going? Is there something wrong standing in the sun like this?
The girl took off her glasses, her sharp white face was covered with sweat, her long black hair stuck to her neck. Her voice was slow and a bit hoarse:
– I want to go to the town center, my car broke down on the road, I can’t make a call because there’s no signal.
Miguel looked around, the phone signal here was really weak. He looked at the suitcase, at the tight red dress and the muddy high heels. Something was unusual, but he didn’t ask further:
– I’ll take you to the nearest bus station. It’s about 10 kilometers away. My car is very slow, but there’s no one else around now.
The girl was silent for a few seconds and then nodded. Miguel took off his old jacket hanging on the bike and gave it to her:
– The road is very sunny, put it on so you don’t get burned.
The old car started again, rushing forward in the midday sun. But after only a few hundred meters, there was a sound of the engine revving and then stopping. It was Diego, the eldest son of the barangay, driving a brand new Honda. Seeing Miguel carrying a girl in a red dress, holding a suitcase, Diego laughed loudly:
– Hey, Miguel! You know a city girl? Be careful not to “carry a snake to bite your own chickens”, you hear!
He deliberately spoke loudly so that the people weeding the fields could hear. An old woman looked up, squinting her eyes:
– Another bad girl has come to seduce a poor village boy. Be careful not to lose everything in the house!
Giggles and whispers arose. A few children ran after her, shouting. Miguel remained silent, the girl also bowed her head. The road back to town was long, the old car crawled slowly up the slopes, many times having to push it because the engine was too hot. The girl did not complain, just quietly observed the makeshift roofs, dry and cracked fields, and shallow ponds.
When they arrived at the empty bus station, Miguel helped her lift her suitcase down. She gave him her coat and nodded in thanks. Miguel turned around to leave, but the girl was about to take out a shiny business card, but put it away, bowed her head, and pulled her suitcase into the waiting room.
For Miguel, helping people was a normal thing. He drove home, and the girl sat down on a stone bench, taking out an old envelope from her suitcase. Inside was a blurry photo taken more than 10 years ago: a country boy helping an injured man on the side of the road. The wooden bracelet on the boy’s hand was still clear.
…
Three days later
In the midday sun, the barangay cultural house yard was crowded. A convoy of luxury cars drove in, led by a black Mercedes. The door opened, and a woman in a black suit and red high heels stepped out – it was the girl in the red dress from the day before, now full of charisma.
She introduced herself as Isabella, a representative of the Thien Tam Foundation, who had come to survey and select the village to be the first model ecological – medical – vocational training area in the province. The whole village cheered… until she continued:
– Three days ago, I came here in disguise and witnessed with my own eyes how people treated a stranger. There was only one person who helped me – Miguel.
The room was dead silent. Isabella showed the photo taken that day: the girl in the red dress standing by the roadside, Miguel was handing her a shirt and inviting her into the car. All eyes turned to Miguel – the poor construction worker who had been looked down upon.
Then she took out an old sandalwood bracelet, exactly like the one Miguel was wearing:
Ten years ago, you saved a man who had an accident on the highway, right? That person was my father.
The hall burst into cheers. She recounted that her father had temporary amnesia, and after his death, the family found the bracelet with a tiny camera attached, and saw a picture of a 15-year-old boy carrying him in the pouring rain – that was Miguel.
Isabella declared:
The project will be implemented here, and the leader will be Miguel – the one who was once considered the lowest.
The whole village was ashamed, and apologized to Miguel one by one, including Diego and the restaurant owner who had chased him away. Miguel only said:
I forgive, but I do not forget.
In the following days, the whole barangay changed. People cleaned up together, planted flowers, and supported each other. Miguel’s mother was taken to a higher-level hospital for treatment. Isabella came to visit, giving her a handkerchief embroidered with the words Puso Mapayapa (Peace of Mind), saying that her mother had told her to bow to kind people no matter who they were.
The day Isabella left the village, Miguel stood silently watching her. In his hand was that handkerchief – a symbol of respect and gratitude. And like sunlight, kindness can be overlooked, but it will always leave a deep mark, changing an entire village.
