Mr. Minh and Ms. Hanh had been married for three years before they finally received the good news. Since learning that his wife was pregnant, Minh had been caring for her meticulously. Now six months into the pregnancy, Hanh’s belly was growing larger by the day.
However, recently, she had started acting strangely: she would lie in bed all day and barely step outside. No matter how much Minh encouraged her, she only forced a smile and said she was tired.
At first, Minh thought his wife was just experiencing morning sickness or feeling heavy from the pregnancy, but as time went on, he became increasingly concerned. At meals, she would eat only a little before lying back down. Even when needing to use the bathroom, she tried to hold it in. Worried, Minh urged her several times:
– “You can’t just lie here all the time; it will affect the baby.”
But Hanh only shook her head slightly, her eyes red and watery. The way she clutched the thin blanket made Minh even more uneasy.
One evening, Minh came home late from his shift. He opened the bedroom door and saw his wife in the same position: lying on her side, the blanket pulled tightly from her chest down to her feet. The strange atmosphere made his heart race. He stepped closer, sat beside her, and softly called:
– “Hanh… are you hiding something from me?”
Hanh remained silent, her shoulders trembling slightly. In that moment, Minh suddenly felt an invisible wave of fear. He reached out and touched the edge of the blanket.
– “I’m sorry… but I need to know.”
With that, Minh nervously lifted the blanket.
The sight before him left him frozen. Hanh’s legs were swollen, her skin pale and covered with numerous bruises. Her feet were cracked and red, so tender that even the slightest touch caused her to moan in pain. Minh was stunned, unable to believe this was real.
– “Oh my God… why didn’t you tell me?” – Minh choked back tears.
Hanh turned her face away, sobbing:
– “I didn’t want you to worry… I was afraid you’d be tired, afraid you’d be sad. So I hid it…”
It turned out that, throughout these months, Hanh had been suffering from pregnancy-related leg swelling. Her legs grew increasingly painful, making it impossible for her to walk. But out of concern for her hardworking husband, she gritted her teeth and endured the pain in silence, hiding everything beneath the blanket.
Minh wrapped his arms around his wife, his heart overflowing with compassion. He realized he had been too inattentive, focusing only on work and failing to notice the changes in her.
The very next morning, Minh took Hanh to the hospital. Hearing the doctor explain that these were warning signs of preeclampsia—a dangerous complication that could affect both mother and baby—Minh’s heart tightened. If left undetected, the consequences could be severe.
In the hospital room, as the doctor administered medication to reduce the swelling, Hanh held her husband’s hand tightly, tears streaming down her face. Minh whispered:
– “From now on, don’t hide anything from me. Whatever happens, we’ll face it together.”
Hanh nodded, choked with emotion. In that moment, Minh realized that true love isn’t just sweet words; it’s facing pain and fear together.
In the days that followed, Minh took extended leave to care for his wife. He learned to cook, massage Hanh’s legs every evening, and guide her slowly around the hospital courtyard. Many onlookers were moved, praising the couple’s devotion.
Three months later, Hanh gave birth to a healthy baby girl. When the first cry echoed through the delivery room, Minh wept like a child. He held his wife’s hand, kissed her forehead, and whispered:
– “Thank you… for being so strong for our family.”
And in his heart, the memory of that night—when he nervously lifted the blanket and saw his wife’s swollen legs—would forever remain a milestone. It was the moment he understood more deeply than ever: love is sharing, it is never letting the one you care for suffer in silence.
