Christine Angelica Faba de Sera—better known by her close friends and family—was born on April 13, 1997, in General Santos City. She was the second of four children, described by her parents as intelligent, creative, and loving. In 2008, she enrolled at Heritage Academy of the Philippines in GenSan, studying there until 2013. She later attended the University of Mindanao, taking Communication and Media Arts, and graduated summa cum laude.
After graduation, Christine worked as a marketing associate for a popular Mindanao mall chain for two years. Tall, bright, confident, and charming, her entry into the world of pageantry wasn’t surprising. In 2017, she placed first runner-up in a Davao pageant. Two years later, she joined the Miss Mindanao pageant and reached the finals.
In 2019, she began working as a flight attendant for Philippine Airlines, the country’s flag carrier. This moved her to Pasay City, Metro Manila, for about a year. Her social media posts showed she loved her job—traveling the world and enjoying life. She was clearly a vibrant young woman who loved fashion, enjoyed friendships, and traveled to create memories.
But all her bright future dimmed on January 1, 2021. Though police later closed her case, Christine’s family refuses to accept their findings.
On December 28, 2020, Christine posted her last Instagram update with the caption, “Last flight for this one. Hell of a year.” She told her mother she planned to ring in the new year with friends. She checked into the City Garden Hotel in Makati, sharing room 2209 with three friends: Romel “Gida” Gregorio de Guzman and John “JP” de la Cerna.
The party began with dinner and alcohol, and according to witnesses, nine other men—friends of her friends—joined and moved to room 2206–2207. At 6:23 AM, one friend helped Christine from 2207 back to 2209 and tucked her into bed; the party ended and others rested.
At 7:30 AM, Clark Rapinan witnessed Christine throwing up and helped her to the bathroom. He advised her to sleep in the bathtub so the bed wouldn’t get dirty. At 10:00 AM, Gida found her still in the tub, covered her with a blanket, and went back to sleep, believing she was alive.
Two hours later, Gida woke the group to check out—only to realize Christine’s breathing had stopped. They attempted CPR and sought help from the hotel staff, who responded slowly. Although they finally brought a wheelchair and summoned emergency responders (though reportedly not the barangay rescue team), Christine was brought by her friends to Makati Medical Center and declared dead on arrival.
Dr. Marichi Ramos, who considered herself Christine’s second mother, noticed bruises on Christine’s limbs when viewing the body. Alarmed, she reported this to Makati police, and two of Christine’s friends who brought her to the hospital were briefly detained for questioning. Several men with her at the hotel had already checked out.
An autopsy was conducted on January 2 by Police Major Michael Nick Sarmiento at the Rizal Funeral Home in Pasay. The police report cited death from a ruptured aortic aneurysm, with mention of bruises on her hands, right thigh, knee, ankle, foot, a linear abrasion on her thigh, and a healed laceration on her genitals. The family rejected the results, calling them inconsistent with aneurysm and alleging signs of sexual assault.
One day after the police announced aneurysm, news broke that 11 men from the hotel were charged with rape and homicide. The police explained this reversal citing the bruises and DNA evidence, though initial autopsy did not report DNA. Christine’s family and some netizens accused police of being pressured to resolve the case, leading to conflicting facts.
Critics note that the hotel did not release CCTV recordings, and the police reported sponge-derived DNA in a blanket—something the accused deny. The family argued evidence was contaminated and mishandled, asking the NBI to conduct a second autopsy. The body was released to the family for private funeral rites. Tests ultimately returned negative for drugs.
By late April, Makati prosecutors dropped charges, citing insufficient evidence. In March 2021, the NBI recommended obstruction of justice and homicide charges due to festival of the incident. The Justice Department also formed a special task force, citing evidence of embalming without family permission and contamination of samples.
In summary, authorities concluded Christine died of a ruptured aneurysm with undiagnosed hypertension, but her family strongly disputes this, claiming she was sexually assaulted and that investigators mishandled the case. The public remains divided and outraged.
