Air India has confirmed that 241 people have died and only one survived after their passenger plane, bound for London, crashed.

The aircraft was carrying 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian.

The sole survivor was a Briton named Vishwashkumar Ramesh, who reportedly jumped out of the exit door immediately after hearing an explosion in the plane’s engine.

Among the fatalities was Vijay Rupani, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Rupani, 68, served as Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021.

India has concluded rescue operations at the crash site, and the lone survivor is currently recovering in the hospital.

In addition, around 50 people were affected when the plane crashed into the area, bringing the total casualties to 291.

Authorities are now searching for the black box of Air India Flight 171 to determine the cause of the crash.

Around 50 medical students were also injured after the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into the building where they were residing.

Experts from the US and United Kingdom have already arrived in India to assist with the investigation.

The airline company, Air India, has assured that they will provide assistance to the victims, with each receiving over PHP 6.5 million in compensation.

It can be recalled that shortly after takeoff, the Air India plane crashed into a residential area near Ahmedabad airport.
