The iconic and legendary OPM (Original Pilipino Music) singer and songwriter Freddy Aguilar has sadly passed away at the age of 72. He died in the early hours of May 7, 2025, around 1:30 a.m., at the Philippine Heart Center.

The news was confirmed by the Manila Standard in an interview with Attorney George Briones, General Counsel of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, where Aguilar served as the National Executive Vice President.

It can be recalled that on May 20, his wife Jovat Dula Albao shared updates about the OPM legend’s condition. In a Facebook post, she said that Freddy Aguilar was not only considered a pillar of Original Filipino Music but also a symbol of Filipino patriotism. He was regarded as one of the best and most respected legendary singers in the country.

He popularized many songs during his time that deeply resonated with the Filipino people, touching on national issues and family matters. Among his most iconic songs were “Bayan Ko,” “Magdalena,” and most especially “Anak,” the track that catapulted Freddy to international fame. That song alone sold over 33 million copies worldwide and was translated into various languages.

He also became known for his rendition of “Bayan Ko,” which became an anthem for patriotic Filipinos during the People Power Revolution. In 2016, his song “Ipaglalaban Ko” regained popularity when he performed it in support of the Duterte administration.

Today, many are mourning his death, especially his countless fans. And if you were a kid from the 90s, you’ve probably heard and related deeply to his soul-crushing song “Anak.”
