We haven’t even fully moved on yet, dear idols, from the heartbreaking incident where a mother burned her three children alive on May 15, 2025. That tragedy claimed the lives of the mother and her children. And now, idols, another sorrowful news has emerged—yet another family perished in a fire, this time caused by an overcharged cellphone. What’s even more shocking is that it also happened in Bulacan.
On May 21, 2025, four members of a family tragically lost their lives in a fire that broke out in their home in Malolos, Bulacan, in the early hours of Wednesday. According to the chief investigator of the Malolos Fire Station, the fire occurred around 4:00 a.m. and lasted for about 30 minutes.
Investigators found that the cause of the fire was a cellphone left charging overnight. This is truly heartbreaking, dear idols, for the family. Among the deceased were the couple Philip and Maricel Kalawag and two of their children. One 15-year-old child survived but sustained injuries.
The family was peacefully sleeping, unaware that a tragedy was about to strike—all because of an overcharged cellphone, which turned out to be the cause of their demise. Although one of their children survived, the incident will surely haunt them like a nightmare.
What’s shocking, idols, is that this fire happened in the same month and year as the previous incident—and again, in Bulacan. It’s painful for any family to witness such a fate befall their loved ones. According to the investigation, the fire was caused by an overcharged cellphone left plugged in overnight, which resulted in the deaths of four family members.
A netizen, who is also a cellphone technician, commented that in truth, it’s not really dangerous to charge a cellphone overnight. Modern phone batteries have a Battery Management System (BMS) that stops charging once full. The real danger comes from substandard chargers, especially cheap ones with no overcharging protection. That’s why it’s important not to skimp on quality. Cheap, fake chargers can cost you your life.
Many cheap and counterfeit chargers in the market today pose serious risks. What’s worse is that this incident happened at dawn, a time when people are in deep sleep—leaving them unaware that their house was already on fire.
So, a reminder to everyone—especially to all parents, moms and dads—when charging your phones or any device, never leave them plugged in overnight, especially when going to bed. Also, always use original and certified chargers. Avoid buying from random street vendors just to save a few bucks—your life is worth more than that.
What’s truly alarming is that both fires occurred in the same month and year, and both in Bulacan. Hopefully, these tragedies serve as a warning to all of us. Yes, we are all destined to die someday, but while we’re still here, let us take care of the life God has loaned us.
May all these incidents serve as lessons to everyone around the world. Let us all learn to avoid overcharging devices to prevent such heartbreaking outcomes. Condolences to all the bereaved families.
