I was five months pregnant when I accidentally read my husband’s journal—and discovered a heartbreaking secret
I found out I was pregnant on a sunny morning. Two deep red lines appeared on the pregnancy test, filling me with both joy and trembling nerves. When I told my husband the news, he wrapped me in a tight embrace, his face lit up with a radiant smile, and his eyes sparkled with happiness.
From that moment on, I believed we shared the same dream: to build a small family and eagerly await the birth of our little child.
During the first three months of pregnancy, I suffered from severe morning sickness and lost a lot of weight. My husband took meticulous care of me—cooking plain porridge, preparing glasses of fresh orange juice, and helping me up whenever I felt dizzy. In my eyes, he was the most wonderful husband, a future model father.
But then, one evening—when I was already five months along—I accidentally uncovered a secret I will never forget for the rest of my life.
That night, I was tidying up his small study. Inside a drawer, I found a leather-bound notebook, the kind he often used for work-related journaling. Curious, I opened it, expecting to find nothing more than a few scattered notes.
But then I read:
“I’m not ready to be a father. There are still so many things I haven’t accomplished. Having a child now feels like a chain holding me down…”
“I love her, but I hate this feeling of being tied down. I wish things were different…”
Each word felt like a cold blade stabbing straight into my heart.
I held the notebook in my trembling hands, unable to speak. The man who, just yesterday, gently pressed his ear to my belly and whispered, “Daddy loves you more than anything in this world,” was secretly torn inside—resenting the very existence of our baby.
I was wrong… to naively believe that love alone was enough. I was foolish… to trust that those hugs and smiles came purely from the heart.
That night, I didn’t cry. I just sat silently by the window, one hand stroking my belly, the other trying to steady the chaos rising in my chest.
“My child…” I whispered, “No matter what your father feels, I love you with every breath in me.”
In the days that followed, I lived like a ghost. I didn’t blame him, nor did I lash out, because I understood the helplessness of being pushed into a role one wasn’t ready for. But I also stopped hoping. I turned inward—focusing on myself and our child.
I learned to attend prenatal check-ups on my own. I memorized every ultrasound result. I picked out baby clothes by myself. I found joy in every gentle kick, in every tiny onesie I bought for my baby.
My husband seemed to notice the change. He asked:
“Are you mad at me?”
I simply smiled and shook my head. It wasn’t anger—it was the fact that I no longer expected him to be the hero of our little family.
One night, as I was folding baby clothes, he sat down beside me, his voice trembling:
“I’m sorry. I was so scared. But seeing how strong you are now… I realize, maybe I’ve loved this child all along—I just hadn’t admitted it to myself.”
I looked up at him. For the first time in months, I saw true acceptance in his eyes. Not the kind born out of duty or pressure, but a natural, genuine love.
Some journeys don’t begin in happiness. Some children come into this world amidst confusion. But with a mother’s unwavering love, and a father’s late but sincere change of heart, they can still grow up surrounded by love.
I placed his hand on my belly, where our baby was gently kicking. We sat there, no more words needed.
I knew then—I was no longer alone.
