Scheduled for burial this Sunday, May 11, coinciding with the celebration of Mother’s Day, is the five-year-old girl who was run over by a runaway SUV at the departure area of Ninoy Aquino International Airport on May 4. Despite not being able to walk yet, the injured but surviving mother, Cint Masungsong, insisted on joining the burial to see her daughter Malia for the last time.

In a video by ABS-CBN News, the grieving mother can be seen in a wheelchair, clutching her child’s gadget tightly. She was escorted by a group of men, while others dressed in white — presumably family and mourners — were seen surrounding the area, preparing to attend the burial.

It was earlier reported that the father, Denmark Maso, recounted how he broke the tragic news to his wife. Cint, though injured and still in the ambulance, was conscious and seemed to sense what had happened. “She kept asking for confirmation whether our daughter had really passed away,” shared Madona Masungsonggo, Malia’s aunt and Denmark’s sister, in a media interview.

“I could hear my sister screaming outside, shouting Malia’s name. It was as if she already knew,” Madona added. According to Danmark, they have no plans of dropping the case, determined to pursue justice for their daughter’s death.

Here are some of the reactions from netizens:

“The pain of burying your child — especially one lost to a tragic accident — is beyond words. This is unbearable for any parent.”

“It breaks my heart every time I see this on my news feed. The mother’s pain is unimaginable — to be the one bringing your child to their final resting place, especially when they’re someone you spent every day with.”

“Rest in peace, baby girl. Watch over your parents. Grieving takes time, especially when it’s your own child you’ve lost.”

“No one ever wants something like this to happen. Only the Lord knows what lies ahead. Our lives are merely borrowed.”

“On Mother’s Day, the very symbol of motherhood is being laid to rest. We extend our deepest condolences to the family. Angel Malia, may you someday return to your family’s embrace in spirit.”

“This is probably the most heartbreaking experience a mother or any parent can go through. And to happen on Mother’s Day — it’s just unbearable. Our condolences to the entire family.”
