My Ex-Husband Gave Our Daughter an ATM Card as Dowry—After the Wedding, I Visited and Was Stunned by What I Saw Behind the Door
The day before our daughter’s wedding, my ex-husband came to see me. He handed me a bank card, saying there wasn’t much inside, but he hoped it could be part of her dowry—a small way to make up for all the years he had fallen short as a father.
Even now, our two families—his side and my mother’s side—still hold very different views about why our marriage fell apart years ago. His relatives believe I left him because he was poor, that I looked down on him and picked fights because I didn’t see a future with someone like him. Meanwhile, my family insists that after I gave birth, my mother-in-law was never satisfied with me. They say she put so much pressure on us that it eventually forced us to divorce.
Actually, when he and I got married, neither of our families was well-off. We met through an arranged introduction—found each other compatible and decided to marry without thinking too much. At first, my mother-in-law didn’t seem to object. But after I gave birth, due to certain complications, I could no longer have more children. That’s when she started picking on me, finding faults, and deliberately pressuring me to leave.
Seeing that I was determined to hold the marriage together, she began speaking ill of me to my husband—accusing me of being improper, claiming she saw me laughing and talking with strange men. In truth, those men were just delivery workers—people who brought gas, rice, or came to fix the plumbing.
I merely exchanged polite greetings with them. But my husband, suspicious by nature, started checking my phone regularly and even followed me. The arguments became more frequent, and eventually, I left with my child, ending the marriage
I still clearly remember the smug look in my mother-in-law’s eyes as she saw me off at the door. A few months later, my ex-husband remarried. Not long after, I heard that his new wife was pregnant. At the time, I simply thought, “Well, this must be exactly what they wanted.”
As for me—a divorced woman who could no longer have children, raising a young child on my own, and struggling financially—remarrying seemed like a distant dream. So I chose to live alone and quietly raise my child.
But life is always full of surprises. Some time later, I heard that his new wife had a tragic accident, and both mother and child didn’t survive. He was devastated, and my mother-in-law nearly went mad. After that, she tried to persuade me to come back, but I no longer wanted anything to do with that family.
I worked hard to raise my daughter, and finally, the day came when she was to get married. Out of respect for the blood ties, I took the initiative to inform my ex-husband and asked if he wanted to attend our daughter’s wedding.
To my surprise, the day before the wedding, he came and handed me a bank card. He said there wasn’t much in it, but he hoped it could serve as a bit of dowry for our daughter—as a way to make up for all the years he had fallen short
I took the card, and only after the wedding did I check it—there was over 1.5 billion VND inside. I was stunned. Although we hadn’t seen each other for years, I knew life hadn’t been easy for him. His job wasn’t stable. Where did he get that kind of money?
When I told my daughter and son-in-law, both felt uncomfortable accepting such a large sum. So I decided to find him and ask directly. To my surprise, when I went to his old house, I was told he had sold it. Fortunately, someone gave me his new address.
I wandered through a narrow alley for a long time before finally finding it. When I knocked on the door, both of us were shocked to see each other. The room he was living in was small and bare, with nothing but a bed. That’s when I found out: he had sold his only house to gather enough money for our daughter’s dowry, and he was now renting a cheap room just to get by.
Honestly, for all these years, I’ve held resentment toward him, unable to forgive. But in that moment, my heart softened. He may have nothing, but when it mattered most, he still chose to sacrifice everything for our daughter.
I thought, maybe I will remarry him. After all, the one who caused our breakup—my former mother-in-law—is no longer around.
