My mother sent my sister-in-law back to her parents’ house, asking my in-law to teach her a lesson. The next morning, my in-law did something that made my mother faint…
“Don’t worry, I will definitely teach my daughter properly,” my in-law said in a reasonable and sincere tone, which reassured my mother. Thankfully, my brother loves our mother and agreed to let his wife go back to her parents’ house so they could help discipline her.
My brother has been married for half a year now. Even though our father has passed away, our mother is still young and healthy, able to live alone, yet she firmly insisted that her children live with her so they could care for her. She has sacrificed her whole life for her children, so in her old age she should be able to enjoy some blessings.
Fortunately, my brother listened to her and did not leave her to live alone. But my sister-in-law is stubborn and doesn’t understand my mother’s feelings; the two often clash.
My mother just wanted to keep their money safe for them—after all, she’s old now and doesn’t spend much—but my sister-in-law didn’t agree. My mother told her to quit her job and stay home to prepare for having a child, then to take care of her husband and raise their child. But she refused, saying she wanted to focus on her career and even openly declared that she would have children only after three years, when she turned 28, because she was still young now.
On weekends, my mother wanted her to stay home to clean the house, but she hired an hourly maid instead and went out to meet friends for coffee and leisure. She said she was already exhausted from working all week and wanted to rest on weekends. The only thing she would do on those days was buy food and cook one nice meal for the whole family, then consider her duty done. On weekdays, she only managed to cook dinner, nothing more.
In the morning, my mother told her to get up and make breakfast for her mother-in-law, but she handed my mother some money instead and told her to go out for breakfast. She said she worked late and couldn’t get up early.
At night, before going to bed, my mother asked her to massage her legs for about an hour because elderly people often have body aches, but she immediately bought my mother a massage machine, explaining that she had extra work to do in the evenings. Having a daughter-in-law in name only, yet my mother couldn’t rely on her for anything!
When my mother invited friends over and asked her to cook, she just spent money to order a banquet from a restaurant. Even though she paid for it, my mother was still furious. What my mother wanted was a diligent, capable, and dutiful daughter-in-law—not one who flaunted her money in front of her husband’s family and might someday try to dominate everyone in the household.
There were many other petty daily conflicts as well, all stemming from the fact that my sister-in-law didn’t know how to maintain harmony in the mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationship. She only wanted to do things her own way and didn’t respect my mother’s words. I told my mother to kick them out and let them live separately—she had it so easy yet didn’t know how lucky she was.
But my mother was determined to discipline and correct her. She didn’t want my brother and his wife to divorce and bring shame to the family. Out of pride, she endured it, though she deeply regretted agreeing to my brother marrying her in the first place.
That weekend, my mother brought several friends home, proudly announcing that her daughter-in-law would show off her cooking skills. Everyone was excited, but she flat-out refused, saying she had been working late for several nights to meet deadlines and was too exhausted.
My mother-in-law was humiliated in front of her friends because of her daughter-in-law. In her anger, she decided to take her straight back to her parents’ house, asking my in-laws to properly teach their daughter, so she would understand that she was no longer single and that a married woman must know her responsibilities.
“Don’t worry, I will definitely teach my daughter properly,” my in-law said sincerely, and my mother felt reassured. Thankfully, my brother loves my mother and agreed to let his wife stay with her parents so they could help discipline her.
Who would have thought that the next morning, when my mother went on Facebook, her face turned pale as she saw a post from my in-law. It was a photo of my sister-in-law sitting on a hospital bed eating porridge, but it was the accompanying caption that was truly shocking:
“Seeing you pale and sick on the hospital bed, I actually feel relieved because you have returned to your parents. I will never let you go back to that place again. You did nothing wrong—you treated others with all the kindness and effort you could. But for some people, it will never be enough. And some men don’t even know right from wrong, nor do they know how to protect their wives.
Many times I told you to come home, but you couldn’t bear to leave because of your attachment. Well, this time, someone has made the decision for you—how lucky. My good daughter, someone as kind as you will surely find greater happiness in the future.”
In the comments, my sister-in-law replied respectfully in agreement. My mother was so furious she almost fainted. Just the day before, my in-law had spoken in such a reasonable and conciliatory manner—yet the next morning, he posted such a thunderous statement.
My brother quickly called his wife, but she said she wanted a divorce. For several days, she had been staying up late working and was exhausted, yet he hadn’t shown the slightest concern. That night, back at her parents’ house, she even fainted and had to be put on an IV drip.
If my mother had known that taking her back to her parents’ house would lead to her demanding a divorce, she certainly wouldn’t have done it. But now, no matter what we say, my in-laws and my sister-in-law refuse to change their minds. Please, everyone, give me advice on how to convince her to come back.
