My Wife Happily Went for a Prenatal Checkup, But the Doctor Told Me to Stay Away from My Husband and Never Come Back…
I was over four months pregnant. It was the joy that my husband, Hoang, and I had long awaited. Since learning that I was expecting, I felt like I was walking on clouds, imagining our baby’s face every day, even secretly knitting tiny, cute sweaters for the little one.
That morning, I went to the hospital alone for routine tests and an ultrasound. Hoang said he was busy with work, but he promised to take me out for dinner later to eat the food I liked. I didn’t think much of it, just feeling happy at the thought of spending the evening together, looking at our baby’s ultrasound images.
The ultrasound room was quiet, with only the sounds of machines and keyboard clicks. I lay on the bed, lifted my shirt, and felt the cold gel spread across my belly. The doctor, an older man, initially spoke to me in a normal, friendly tone. He asked:
– “How many weeks along are you? Have you been coming in regularly?”
I smiled and replied, even boasting that my husband was very attentive to both me and the baby. But just a few minutes later, I noticed a strange change in his eyes. The hand holding the probe froze, trembling slightly. His gaze was fixed on the screen, and his face went pale.
I began to worry.
– “Doctor… is something wrong with my baby?”
He didn’t answer immediately, just swallowed and quietly printed the ultrasound results along with several test sheets. When he handed me the papers, he took a deep breath, his voice trembling:
– “There’s something you need to hear. I advise you… stay away from your husband. Never return to him.”
My heart stopped. I didn’t understand what he meant.
– “Doctor… what do you mean? Why should I stay away from my husband?”
He looked at me with awkward hesitation, as if struggling internally. Finally, he pulled up a chair, lowered his voice:
– “I cannot disclose information about other patients, but… I have never examined your husband. However, based on your results, I can see that you have contracted sexually transmitted diseases that are typically only found in people who have extramarital affairs. These diseases are now threatening the baby in your womb. Since you are pregnant, these infections likely came from your husband.”
My body went numb, the test results trembling in my hands. My vision blurred, and all I could hear was the pounding of my heart. All the happy images I had imagined suddenly shattered. I asked, trembling:
– “Sexually transmitted diseases? Diseases from someone’s affairs outside… now I have them, and my baby will be affected?”
The doctor squeezed my hand lightly, his eyes serious but full of compassion:
– “I cannot confirm the impact on the baby yet; more tests are needed. But you still have time to protect your child. The most important thing now… is that you talk to your husband and, if possible, stay away from him.”
At that moment, his voice choked, as if carrying the weight of a moral burden. I saw in his eyes a horrifying truth that he could not fully speak.
I walked out of the examination room, my mind spinning. The hallway was crowded, but I felt as if I were lost in endless emptiness. Why had my husband hidden this from me? All this time, he had been gentle, caring, and yet behind that smile, he concealed the truth about himself. Were those nights he came home late from working overtime, supposedly to earn extra money for us, actually nights he spent elsewhere?
That evening, Hoang came home earlier than usual. He brought a bouquet of bright red roses, cheerfully saying:
– “Today the company signed a big contract. Did you get any good news from our baby?”
I looked at him, my heart constricted. The man standing before me—the one I had once trusted completely—now felt like a stranger. I tried to smile, careful not to reveal the panic inside. Yet my hand instinctively rested on my belly, shielding the tiny life within.
That night, I lay on my side, tears soaking my pillow.
I knew that deciding to leave him would not be easy. But I no longer had the right to choose for myself alone. I had to think of our child, of the small life that hadn’t yet entered the world.
The next day, I quietly packed a few sets of clothes and went to my mother’s house. I used the excuse of needing rest for the pregnancy, avoiding the city’s smoke and dust. My mother looked at me with concern, but I could only avoid her gaze.
Late that night, I received dozens of missed calls from Hoang. His messages poured in: “Where are you?”, “I’m so worried about you”, “Don’t leave like this…” But I didn’t dare respond. I feared that even a single moment of weakness would make me return to his arms.
The following morning, he stood at my mother’s door.
– “Why did you leave? Don’t you know how worried I am about you and our baby?”
I told him to come in. Sitting across from him, I looked him straight in the eye and explained about the checkup, the sexually transmitted disease that both of us had, and how it could affect our baby.
His face went pale. He knelt at my feet and confessed: that night he had gone out drinking with a business partner and was persuaded to go along with someone he didn’t know—just a karaoke club employee. It had only happened once. He had no idea he would contract the disease and pass it on to me, putting our baby at risk. He begged me to forgive him, just this once.
I didn’t know if I could end the marriage. If I stayed away, our child wouldn’t have a father.
After two days to calm my mind, I called him. He came to pick me up, and we went to the hospital to treat the infection and minimize its effects on the baby. That entire day, he took care of me bit by bit, but I didn’t speak a single word to him.
