On my wedding night, seeing that part of my husband, I trembled and finally understood why his family gave a 20-billion-dong villa to marry off a poor maid like me…
My name is Lan, twenty-six years old, born into a poor family in the sun-scorched Central region. My father passed away early, and with my mother in poor health, I had to quit school after grade 10 to work as a hired hand. After years of struggling, I finally found work as a maid in one of the richest families in the city—the Tran family.
My husband, Tran Minh, was their only son. Handsome, well-educated, composed, but there was always an invisible distance between him and everyone else. I worked there for nearly three years, used to lowering my head in silence, never daring to imagine I could step into their world. Yet one day, the lady of the house suddenly called me into the living room, placed a marriage certificate in front of me, and said:
“Lan, if you agree to marry Minh, that lakeside villa will be under your name. That is the family’s wedding gift.”
I was stunned. A maid like me—what right did I have to compare myself to their precious son? I thought it was a joke, but when I saw her serious eyes, I realized it was real. I didn’t know why they chose me. I only knew my mother was gravely ill, and the cost of her medicine weighed heavily on me. Reason told me to refuse, but my weak heart nodded in agreement.
The wedding was grand and luxurious beyond imagination. I wore a pure white gown, sat beside Minh, still feeling as if I were dreaming. But his eyes looked at me coldly, distantly, as though he held a secret I had yet to uncover.
On our wedding night, I nervously stepped into a room filled with roses. Minh sat there, in a white shirt, his face sculpted like a statue, but his eyes heavy with sadness. As he walked toward me, my whole body trembled. It was in that moment that the cruel truth revealed itself.
Minh was not like other men. I realized he carried a congenital defect—one that prevented him from fully fulfilling the role of a husband. At that moment, I collapsed inside. Everything became clear: the reason they gave me a villa, the reason a poor maid could enter such a wealthy family—it wasn’t because I was special. It was because… they needed a “nominal” wife for Minh.
Tears streamed down my face—I didn’t know if it was from hurt or pity. Minh quietly sat beside me, his voice low:
“I’m sorry, Lan. You don’t deserve this. I know you’ve sacrificed so much, but my mother… she needs me to have a family, needs me to have a wife by my side so she can be at peace. I couldn’t go against her.”
In the golden light, I saw his eyes glisten with tears. The cold man was also bearing a hidden pain. He was no different from me—we were both victims of fate.
After that, our life together was strange. There was no sweetness of lovers, only respect and companionship. Minh treated me kindly: every morning he asked about me, every afternoon he walked with me by the lake, every evening we shared a meal together. He never saw me as a maid anymore, but as a partner. And that made it harder for me—my heart wavered, but my mind reminded me that we could never have a complete marriage.
One day, I overheard the lady of the house speaking with her private doctor: she had heart disease and didn’t have much longer to live. She was afraid that once she was gone, Minh would be left in loneliness forever. She chose me because she saw me as gentle, hardworking, and most importantly—without ambition. She believed I would stay by Minh’s side, not abandon him for his defect.
When I learned the truth, my heart was in turmoil. I once thought I was just a “substitute,” exchanged for a villa, but it turned out I had been chosen out of love and trust. From that day on, I decided: no matter what this marriage would become, I would not leave Minh.
One rainy night, Minh suddenly suffered a severe attack of pain. Panicked, I rushed him to the hospital. In his delirium, he gripped my hand tightly and whispered:
“If one day you grow tired, please leave. Take the villa as compensation. I don’t want you to suffer because of me…”
I broke down in tears. Since when had this man taken over my entire heart? I clasped his hand and murmured:
“No matter what, I won’t leave. You are my husband, my family.”
After the crisis passed, Minh regained consciousness. Seeing me still there, his eyes brimmed with tears, but his gaze was warm. We didn’t need a perfect marriage in the usual sense. What we had was understanding, sharing, and a quiet but enduring love.
That 20-billion-dong villa was no longer a “reward,” but a true home. I planted flowers in the yard, Minh painted in the living room. At night, we would sit together, listening to the rain, sharing with each other our simple dreams.
Perhaps happiness is not perfection, but finding someone who, despite imperfections, still chooses to love, still chooses to stay. And I found that happiness—on that trembling wedding night long ago.
