A Heartbreaking Tragedy: Mother Burns Her Three Children in the Philippines

A deeply tragic incident occurred on May 7, 2025, in Barangay San Vicente, Sta. Maria, located in Bulacan province, Philippines. A 31-year-old mother reportedly set herself and her three young sons on fire inside their home.

The youngest child, a one-year-old boy, died on the spot, while his two older brothers, aged three and six, were rushed to the hospital but unfortunately died from the severity of their burns.

According to the initial police investigation, the mother poured a flammable liquid (believed to be paint thinner) on her children and set them on fire. Before dying, one of the children reportedly told rescuers that it was their mother who had done it.

At the scene, investigators found two bottles of paint thinner and a box of matches.

The mother herself suffered severe burns and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. She passed away on May 15, 2025. Because she was the main suspect, the case was declared closed following her death.

Her husband, a member of the Philippine Coast Guard stationed in Batangas, was not at home when the incident happened. Police believe marital issues may have contributed to the tragedy.

This heartbreaking case has shocked the nation, sparking widespread discussions about mental health, particularly postpartum depression, and the pressures of motherhood and financial hardship.

All of us, idols, dream of having a happy family.
A joyful family that you can be with for life and who will support you whenever you’re going through challenges and problems. This dream is shared by many—especially by women, who often dream of marrying a man who will understand and accept all their dislikes and preferences.

Someone who will be considerate and understanding during tough times, especially during family problems. We all know, idols, that building a family is no easy task. Yes, it’s joyful in the beginning. The early years are filled with happiness, especially when the first child is born—something that usually strengthens the bond between husband and wife.

But as time goes on and more children come along, that’s when the real trials begin in marriage. Sometimes, idols, problems arise when the number of children grows, and so do their needs—needs that the father can no longer provide for. This becomes a source of stress for the mother, the light of the home, who stays at home to take care of the children and manage household chores.

Aside from financial struggles, more challenges surface in the relationship. Misunderstandings grow, and this is what happened to one particular family. Due to overwhelming problems, the woman could no longer handle it—especially after developing postpartum depression. You can even see that she still has a young child.

This woman, idols, suffered from postpartum depression, a condition that many, especially men, struggle to understand. Pregnancy is a unique experience for a woman. Aside from the physical changes, carrying and giving birth to a new life can trigger a range of emotions and reactions. While many women are happy during their pregnancy and transition into motherhood, not everyone feels the same.

According to studies, women are at a higher risk of developing depression. This is a mental health condition that deeply affects a person’s mood, thoughts, and actions. There are different types of depression, and postpartum depression is one of them.

This woman may have suffered from it—on top of family problems. Her husband was suspected of doing something inappropriate, and there was also tension with his parents. Due to the mix of stress, emotional burden, and illness, she ended up doing something unimaginable—something no one thought a mother could do to her own children.

In her deep desperation, she burned her three children—and then set herself on fire afterward.
Many of you might wonder, if the mother truly loved her children, why didn’t she just harm herself alone? Why include the kids?

Let us try to understand, idols, why the mother chose to bring her children with her.
At first glance, it’s hard to comprehend why a mother would take her children with her in such a painful exit from this world. Many will wonder, judge, and ask—why the children too? Why didn’t she just go alone?

But behind this tragedy is a story of utter exhaustion, hopelessness, and love—a love so deep that it was willing to give everything, even her last breath.

Every day, this mother carried the weight of the world. She had no partner, no one to trust, no strong support system. The allowance for her three children was only 2,400 pesos a month—an amount that wasn’t even enough for food, milk, medicine, or other basic needs.

She had three children, each with growing needs. Meanwhile, the mother herself was suffering from illness and couldn’t even afford her own treatment. Her husband—a policeman—was slowly growing distant, both in attention and presence.

Every day, she faced the reality of poverty, exhaustion, and loneliness. She would bring her children with her everywhere—the market, the hospital—because there was no one else to leave them with. She was always sleep-deprived, with deep eye bags and dark circles under her eyes. Even when she was starving, she prioritized her children.

She endured everything—until the day came when she could no longer go on.
For some, her decision was wrong, selfish, and painful.
But in the eyes of a mother who loved so deeply, and who saw no safe future for her children, this was a desperate act to protect them from further pain, hunger, and suffering.

In her heart, idols, she might have believed it was better for them to find peace together than to remain in a world with no guarantee that someone would love and care for them like she did.

Perhaps she thought: “I’m the only one who can truly take care of my children. If I leave them behind, who can guarantee they won’t suffer, be neglected, or hurt?”

In her tired, worn-out mind, maybe she imagined that in the afterlife, there would be no more sleepless nights, no more struggling to make ends meet with 2,400 pesos. No more hunger. No more tears. Only peace awaits.

We don’t need to approve of what she did, idols. But we hope we can learn to understand her—because behind her final embrace with her children was a mother who loved until the very end. A mother who tried to give everything, even when she had nothing left to offer.

In the eyes of God, what she did was not right.
But what she did for her children is not something we should quickly judge—because all of us have our own battles to face.
