“The Old House in the Countryside – The Secret That Shook the Entire Family”
My name is Khanh, 30 years old. My father was a wealthy businessman, owning his own company, several properties, and an enormous fortune. But to me, he was both distant and close. My mother passed away when I was only eight. After that, my father remarried and had two children with my stepmother. I grew up in the countryside with my grandmother, only returning to the city during holidays. My father’s presence in my childhood was faint—cold, almost indifferent.
When he died, I returned to the grand mansion—a place that had never truly been “home” to me. The whole family dressed in mourning clothes, but I could feel the sharp, wary eyes of my stepmother and her children following me everywhere.
The will was read in the lawyer’s office. The atmosphere was suffocating; everyone tense, waiting. The lawyer’s voice cut through the silence:
“All real estate, cash, and the company… shall be equally divided between my two children with my current wife…”
My stepmother and her children sighed in relief, their eyes flashing with triumph. I just sat quietly. The lawyer continued:
“As for my illegitimate child—Khanh—you will inherit the old house in your late mother’s hometown.”
A mocking smile tugged at my stepmother’s lips. That house was nothing more than a rotting wooden shack in the village, its walls moldy, the roof leaking. For them, it was a way to shove me aside.
I only nodded, swallowing the pain. The money, the company, the prestige—none of it belonged to me.
The Forgotten House
A month later, I returned to that old house. The wind whistled through cracks in the door, dust lay thick, and the smell of dampness clung to the air. I swept, I cleaned, just hoping to preserve the last memories of my mother.
While cleaning, I touched the wall behind an old cabinet. Strangely, it sounded hollow, unlike a normal wall. My heart raced. I pushed the cabinet away and struck lightly with a hammer… a chunk of the wall broke off, revealing a hidden compartment.
Inside lay an old wooden chest, its lock rusted. My hands trembled as I forced it open. In that moment, the world seemed to stop.
Inside were stacks of red land deeds, bank documents, and company shares—all under my mother’s name! Alongside them was a notebook in her handwriting:
“If Khanh ever finds these papers, know that half of the company was my own contribution from the beginning. I never fought for it, because I believed you would understand. When your father is gone, everything legally will belong to you.”
Tears blurred my vision. Mother… had left me not just love, but a true treasure.
The Return
I brought the documents to the lawyer. He carefully examined them, then looked at me gravely:
“Khanh, everything your mother left is completely legal. In fact, half of the company and several properties rightfully belong to you. Nobody knew because your mother remained silent all these years, but she invested in the company long before your father remarried.”
The news hit the family like lightning. When I appeared at the company as a legal co-owner, my stepmother and her children were stunned. Their mocking stares turned into fear.
I only smiled calmly:
“I’m not here to fight. I will keep what my mother left me. As for the company, we still have to work together—for my father’s honor.”
The Ending
That old, broken house they laughed at turned out to be the doorway to truth. I realized my mother hadn’t left me superficial wealth, but a solid foundation and a final message:
“What belongs to you will always find its way back. Do not resent—stand strong.”
And so it did. From someone they thought abandoned, I stood tall in front of the whole family.
