In everyone’s eyes, Minh and Lan were a happy couple. Yet behind the facade of their home was a deep, unhealed crack: the strained relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Minh’s mother often criticized and scolded Lan over trivial matters. But Lan never argued back; she chose to remain silent, enduring it all while quietly fulfilling her duties as a wife and daughter-in-law.

Then one day, Lan suddenly said:
“I want a divorce.”

Minh was stunned. He thought his wife had finally broken under the constant conflict with his mother. He promised her:
“If living with my mother is too hard, we’ll move out on our own. Just please, don’t ask for a divorce.”

But Lan firmly replied:
“No. I’ve already decided.”

She moved out, rented her own place, and filed for divorce. Minh was heartbroken, unable to understand why his wife had changed so suddenly.

One day, Minh went to visit Lan, as if to say goodbye for the last time. When the door opened, he saw her lying weakly on the bed, her face pale, her breath faint. Alarmed, he rushed to her side—only to discover the truth: Lan had been hiding a terminal illness all along.

Tears fell as Lan whispered:
“I don’t want you to suffer… I don’t want to be a burden to you. Divorce me, so you can live a lighter, freer life.”

Minh’s heart shattered. Memories of the past overwhelmed him—those times he had been too absorbed in work, leaving Lan to endure everything alone, those moments he thought she was just being “stubborn” with his mother. Now he finally understood: everything Lan did was out of love, so that he could be happy.

“I’m sorry… I won’t let you face this alone anymore. No matter what happens, we’ll face it together.” Minh held her tightly, his voice breaking.

From that day on, Minh and his mother took turns caring for Lan and seeking every possible treatment. The once strict mother-in-law now broke down in tears as she looked at her frail daughter-in-law:
“You are a blessing to this family… I was wrong not to cherish you from the beginning.”

And Lan—amid the storm—finally found the love and warmth she had always longed for.
