When my wife fainted on our wedding night, I rushed her to the hospital. The doctor’s words revealed a truth impossible to imagine… and I could only laugh bitterly.

The wedding night. Alejandro watched Marisol, his newlywed wife, sleeping soundly at his side. The soft moonlight filtered through the white tulle curtains, illuminating her delicate face with an almost heavenly glow.

A year of love, a year of sweet memories, of eternal promises… and now, finally, they were one. Alejandro felt that his heart overflowed with happiness, peace, and fulfillment. With tenderness, he caressed Marisol’s soft hair, while her calm breathing filled the air. He believed it was the most perfect moment of his life.

But suddenly, something unexpected happened. Marisol let out a faint moan, and her body began to convulse. Alejandro jumped in shock, shaking her desperately:
—“Marisol, what’s wrong with you? Please wake up!”

Her eyes stayed shut, her breathing quickened and, suddenly… she fainted. Panicked, Alejandro hurriedly dressed, carried her in his arms, and ran into the darkness of the night. The wail of the ambulance siren broke the silence, carrying away his deepest fear.

The hospital was cold and noisy. Alejandro paced back and forth in the hallway, his heart pounding in his chest. Every minute stretched into an eternity. Finally, the emergency room door opened, and the doctor came out with a puzzling expression.

—“Family of Marisol?” he asked.
—“Yes, I’m her husband. How is my wife, doctor?” Alejandro rushed to him.

The doctor sighed.
—“She’s fine… but she’s pregnant. The baby is about two months along.”

The words struck Alejandro like a bucket of ice water. Pregnant? Two months? He froze, trying to process each word. Confusion. Pain. Bewilderment. He and Marisol had waited, had been careful, had promised each other to wait until the wedding night. Then… where did this baby come from? Two months ago, they had still been happily planning the wedding, innocent and in love. Alejandro felt his world collapse.

—“Could there be some mistake?” he asked, his voice breaking.
The doctor shook his head.
—“The results are clear. The pregnancy is progressing well. She probably fainted from exhaustion or stress.”

Alejandro stood petrified. Two months. The time hammered in his mind. He looked toward the room where Marisol was resting, and inside him, a strange feeling was born: distrust. Had the woman he had trusted completely hidden such a truth from him?

When Marisol awoke, she found something different in Alejandro’s eyes: no longer tenderness, but emptiness and pain. She understood instantly. Her face turned pale, her trembling lips tried to form words, but nothing came out. Alejandro said nothing. He only arranged for her discharge and drove home in silence.

The ride was long and suffocating. She curled up in the seat, hugging her belly, stealing fearful and guilty glances at him.

At home, the atmosphere was unbearable. The room, still scented with roses and candles, had turned into an oppressive place. Alejandro collapsed onto the sofa, his eyes red, staring at her. She couldn’t take it anymore: she fell to her knees, clutched his legs, and sobbed:
—“Alejandro… I’m sorry… I swear I’m sorry…”

He didn’t answer. His silence was a brutal punishment. At last, he spoke, his voice hoarse:
—“Tell me… whose child is it?”

Marisol trembled. She lifted her gaze, her swollen eyes brimming with tears.
—“It’s Ricardo’s… my ex-boyfriend’s…”

That name was like a knife piercing Alejandro’s heart. Ricardo. A ghost from the past he thought buried forever. Alejandro clenched his teeth.
—“Why? Why him? Why did you hide it from me?”

Marisol cried out loud, confessing between sobs:
—“A week before the wedding… he called me… said he wanted to see me one last time. I thought it was just a farewell… but I drank too much… I lost control… Alejandro, I was weak. I’m sorry! I didn’t have the courage to tell you… I was afraid of losing you… I love you…”

Her words were like daggers. A week before the wedding. While he was dreaming of their happy future, she had fallen into another man’s arms. Alejandro felt disgust: with her, with himself for having trusted so much, even with the child he now knew wasn’t his.

—“And the baby? What were you planning to do?” he asked, trying to steady his voice.

—“I… I was going to… raise him as if he were ours… love him as your son… I hoped you would never find out…” Marisol sobbed, inconsolable.

Alejandro stood, unable to look at her. Love and pain tore him apart inside. He loved her, yes, but the betrayal was too great. Could he raise another man’s child? Could he forgive her and live as if nothing had happened?

That night Alejandro didn’t sleep. Days later, Marisol tried to care for him, cook, talk, but he avoided her. His silence was killing her slowly. Finally, at dawn one day, Alejandro looked at her and said:
—“I don’t know if I can forgive you. I don’t know if this marriage has a future. But I still love you. And because of that… I won’t leave you. I need time. I need proof that you truly want to rebuild all of this.”

Marisol, with tears of relief, swore:
—“I’ll do whatever it takes. I’ll prove it to you every day. I’ll never fail you again.”

Alejandro, however, still felt his soul in shreds. He knew the road ahead would be hard, that the wound would never fully heal. The marriage he once dreamed of as perfect was now like a ship with a massive crack: they could row together to repair it… or sink slowly in distrust.
