Kris Aquino to undergo risky biological medicine trial amid heart health concerns

Filipina actress and TV personality Kris Aquino announced that the next six months will be crucial for her, and will be trying out a new biological medicine starting this upcoming Monday, which could potentially save her heart yet also carries the risk of cardiac arrest.

“This is my chance to save my heart, because kung hindi ito tumalab, Boy, I stand a very strong chance of having cardiac arrest, as in pwedeng it may sleep or kung ano man ang ginagawa ko, pwedeng tumigal nalang ang pagtibok ng puso,” Kris said on Wednesday’s episode of “Fast Talk With Boy Abunda.”

According to Kris, who marked her 53rd birthday on Valentine’s Day, the said medicine carries a significant risk and emphasized that the medication is not administered without steroids, which are essential to prevent anaphylactic shock.

On Monday, Kris will receive an initial small dosage and will evaluate its tolerability. If she can handle the medication, she will proceed with a second dose. However, she has mentioned that she will require a total of four doses of this medication.

“Hindi predictable. I hate to say this, but you know I’ve always been very upfront and honest, hinarap ko ito, because alam ko na bawat araw, especially na birthday ko pa, pahiram nalang ito ng Dyos,” she said to Boy, emphasizing that she sees it as a bonus.

Since 2022, Kris has been in the United seeking medical treatment for multiple types of autoimmune diseases, and disclosed the recent blood panel results three weeks ago that indicates a decline in her health status.

She shared that her hemoglobin levels had dropped significantly, reaching a level where blood transfusion would have been necessary if she were in the Philippines.

Additionally, she noted a doubling of inflamed areas in her body, particularly affecting her lungs due to Churg-Strauss, an autoimmune illness she has been battling alongside other conditions.

The television personality detailed her current medication regimen, which includes methotrexate and dupixent, both crucial in managing her conditions, but faces challenges as some essential medicines are not readily available in the Philippines.

Kris recounted her journey with autoimmune diseases, including thyroiditis, chronic spontaneous urticaria, and Churg-Strauss, describing the physical manifestations and their impact on her daily life.

She also disclosed a recent diagnosis of CREST syndrome, further complicating her health situation.

The limitations imposed by her conditions extend beyond medical treatment and affect her ability to perform daily tasks and even simple activities like walking due to fluctuating blood pressure and heart complications.

Kris emphasized the heightened risk of cardiovascular issues, citing a family history of heart problems and the impact of autoimmune diseases on her overall health.

“So whatever days are left, kung ano man ang natitira, it’s a blessing. But I really want to stay alive. I mean, sino ba namang sasabihin na ‘handa na akong mamatay,’ I don’t think any of us can say that,” she added.

Yet, she disclosed that once she completes the biological medicine on Monday, she will lose her immunization, leaving her vulnerable to any illness without any protection.

LIMIT TREATMENT OPTIONS

When asked about why it’s difficult for Kris to recover, despite having competent doctors, she explained that many treatments cannot be used on her. She is allergic to many medications, including fever reducers, and even steroids have adverse effects on her.

“Mabibilang mo siguro sa sampung daliri, kung ilan lang ang pwede kong gamot na pwedeng i-take and apart from that gumagawa sila ng total blood panel para malaman kung ano ‘yung mga allergies ko,”  she said.

Kris shared that even the smallest particles of dust trigger her allergies, causing asthma attacks when inhaled in unpurified air. She emphasized that this is not just a matter of sensitivity but a genuine health concern.

“Hindi na po ito kaartehan, totoo na naninikip na, nag-aasthma attack,” she said.

“Pero buhay ako ngayon, alam ko st tiwala ako sa dasal na kakayanin pa ito,” she expressed, likening her health condition to entering a battle where her opponents are equipped with armalights while she was only given a butter knife.

COMMITMENT 

Kris, dubbed as the Queen of all Media, gained recognition for her adept hosting skills on numerous talk and game shows, as well as her roles in various films and TV series since the 1990s.

She is a mother of two: Josh, who is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and Bimby, who is currently 16 years old.

The Queen of all Media, who is currently staying in United States since 2022, affirmed her commitment to her son, Bimby, stating that she vowed to do everything for him until he reaches adulthood, “I will really do everything, lahat gagawin ko…ako mismo ang nagpalaki sa dalawa, kailangan pa nila ako.”

In two weeks, Kris said that her two sons will be returning to the Philippines. She explained that her decision to bring them back is fueled by her compassion for them, considering she finds herself confined at home and only venturing out to see doctors.

Prayers

Meanwhile, amidst her critical health status, Kris shared her prayer, stating, “I just want to thank God, gusto ko magpasalamat because people I do not know, people have never met me, ‘yung mga hindi ko kilala,” for offering prayers for her recovery.

“Parang ang kapal naman ng mukha ko, dahil ang tagal nyo na akong pinagdarasal, but I really needed it now,” she said.

But she can’t promise her fans that she will be able to return to hosting and similar activities, because according to Kris, there are many things she can no longer do. Yet, she promised to people who believe and prayed for her that she will not disappoint them just because she gave up.

“Wala sa pananaw ko sa buhay na pwede akong sumuko, kailangan lumaban. Hindi ko ipapahiya ang sarili ko sa inyo, dahil binigyan nyo ako ng pinakamagandang regalo, ‘yung pagmamahal ninyo at pag-suporta at pagdarasal nyo.” she said.

She made it clear that even though she hasn’t done anything to help these people, the strength they give her is overwhelming. She believes that their prayers for her are the most significant gift anyone can offer.
