1. The Return
My name is Linh, and I just turned 20 this year. For ten years, I lived with an adoptive family after being separated from my biological parents during a trip to my maternal hometown. When the police finally found a lead and my parents reclaimed me, the entire neighborhood buzzed with excitement: “That girl is truly blessed, she finally reunited with her real family.”
That day, I stood before the gates of a grand mansion, my eyes blurred with tears. My mother embraced me tightly, sobbing:
— “My child… I finally found you!”
My father gripped my shoulders, his hands trembling. That warmth convinced me that from now on, I would finally have a complete family.
2. The Adopted Sister
In that house, besides my parents, there was Hạ—their adopted daughter, about my age. She had been taken in during the years my family searched for me without success.
On our first meeting, Hạ smiled, but there was something strange in her eyes, as if hiding a secret. I tried to be friendly:
— “We’re the same age, so let’s be sisters from now on.”
She nodded slightly, her voice barely audible:
— “Okay…”
Her attitude made me uneasy, but I thought perhaps she feared being abandoned now that I had returned. I wanted to ease that insecurity.
3. The Note in the Dark
On my first night in my new room, while arranging my belongings, I opened the study desk drawer and a small slip of paper fell out. The handwriting was shaky:
“Run away quickly… It’s not safe here.”
I froze. Who had left this note? And why such a warning?
My heart pounded. I glanced toward the door and saw Hạ standing in the hallway, her eyes filled with sorrow. By instinct, I knew she was the one who had written it.
4. Darkness in the Perfect Family
In the days that followed, I slowly uncovered the truth behind the dazzling façade. My parents were excessively controlling, forcing me to quit school so I could be “groomed at home,” trained in manners, socializing, and financial management. I felt like a bird locked in a gilded cage.
Hạ, on the other hand, was treated harshly—made to do household chores and scolded for no reason. Once, I overheard my mother shouting:
— “Don’t think that living here for ten years makes you equal to Linh! You’re just a replacement, remember that!”
Hạ stayed silent, her eyes hollow. My heart ached for her.
5. The Truth Revealed
One rainy night, Hạ quietly slipped into my room and whispered:
— “You don’t know anything… They don’t love you the way you think. To them, you’re just a tool.”
I trembled:
— “What are you talking about? They’re my real parents!”
Tears streamed down her face as she placed a small notebook in my hands. Inside were meticulous records: donations my parents had received from “searching for their lost child,” money from sympathizers, even investment contracts obtained under the guise of being a “tragic family.”
Hạ choked out:
— “I heard them discussing it myself. For ten years, they kept me only as ‘evidence’ to make their missing-child story more pitiful. Now that you’re back, they’ll use your reunion to milk even more. You’re nothing but a pawn.”
My body went weak. The warning note finally made sense.
6. Confrontation
The next morning, I asked my mother directly:
— “Did you really exploit my disappearance to make money for the past ten years?”
She flinched, then snapped:
— “Who told you that? Did you listen to that stray girl? She’s just jealous that we found you!”
My father added:
— “Linh, you’re our flesh and blood. With us, you’ll have everything. Don’t listen to nonsense.”
I choked back tears:
— “But I don’t want ‘everything’ if it’s built on lies.”
Their eyes flashed with anger. For the first time, I realized this house was not safe.
7. The Decision
That night, I packed my things. Hạ stood by the door and whispered:
— “Go. I’ll stay and hold them back. Don’t look back.”
Tears streamed down my face. I gripped her hand:
— “No, we’re leaving together. You’ve suffered enough.”
We slipped away into the night, carrying only a few clothes and that notebook. I went straight to the police and reported everything.
8. The Ending
After days of investigation, the truth came to light. My biological parents were convicted for exploiting charity for profit. The news spread everywhere, shocking society.
I was given a choice: return to my adoptive family—the ones who had sheltered me during my ten lost years. They welcomed me with open arms, holding me tightly. By my side was Hạ—not “the abandoned foster child” anymore, but my dearest sister.
That night, I wrote in my diary:
“Family isn’t always about blood. True family is where there is love and protection. That note—‘run away quickly’—saved me, and the one who wrote it, Hạ, will forever be my sister.”
