Taking care of my mother for 9 years, I inherited ₱70,000. On the day I went to withdraw the money, the bank employee said something that made me speechless
Sitting in front of my mother’s portrait, Luz gently wiped away the tears rolling down her cheeks. She had just sent her mother to her final resting place at the cemetery in Quezon City. Looking at the empty house, she couldn’t help but feel sad.
My mother passed away peacefully, but her last words before she died still echoed in Luz’s ears:
“I left you ₱70,000, enough so that your siblings don’t have to fight over it.”
Luz wasn’t sad about that small amount of money. For her, nine years of taking care of her mother had been a part of her life, a habit. She expected nothing but peace of mind from her mother.
When her mother fell ill, Luz’s siblings all used the excuse of being busy, having work, or having children to refuse to take care of her. Everyone thought that the money Mom had was not worth much, not worth the effort to take care of her.
“Nanay only has a few SSS pensions, what will she get in the future?” – The eldest sister said coldly.
“Yeah, I think no matter how much she left, it’s not enough, so let Luz take care of it!” – The second brother agreed.
Only Luz stayed, single-handedly taking care of Mom’s meals and medicine for nine years in the old house in Caloocan.
Mom still kept the habit of sitting in front of the TV every day, attentively following the financial news and Philippine stocks. Luz just smiled:
“What are you watching all that for? Rest, Nanay, don’t worry about anything anymore.”
“I’m just watching for fun, dear…” – The old lady smiled gently.
The day Mom passed away, the lawyer came to read the will in front of her children. In her will, she clearly wrote: the entire savings of ₱70,000 deposited at the bank in Makati would be left to Luz – the only daughter who would be by her side until the end of her life.
None of her siblings objected, because they thought the amount was too small. But for Luz, it was her mother’s last gift, a testament to her 9 years of sacrifice.
The day she went to the bank to withdraw money, Luz handed the documents to the employee. After checking the account, the young employee suddenly looked up, looked at her with a strange look and asked:
“Are you sure this is your mother’s account? The current balance is not ₱70,000… but more than ₱7 million.”
Luz’s ears rang. She was stunned. And then… Luz stood still in the transaction room at the Makati bank, her heart pounding. The employee handed her a printout of the account details. A series of numbers appeared before her eyes: ₱7,326,500.00. Not ₱70,000 as her mother said, but a huge fortune.
“Nanay… why did you hide it from me?” – Luz whispered, tears welling up.
The employee explained:
“The old lady has been depositing money here regularly for many years. I also saw in the records that she often monitors stocks and government bonds. Maybe she is very good at investing.”
A memory flashed through Luz’s mind: the image of her old mother sitting attentively in front of the TV, meticulously recording every number, every financial news. At that time, she thought her mother was just watching for fun… but she didn’t expect it to be all true.
Luz silently signed the withdrawal form. But in her heart, she knew this would no longer be her private matter.
Two days later, when the news spread, her siblings came to the house like a swarm of bees. The eldest sister, Marites, was the first to shout:
“Luz, are you hiding it from us? Mom left ₱7 million, not ₱70,000! Why didn’t you say it clearly?”
The second brother, Ramon, also banged on the table:
“This is Mom’s money, you don’t have the right to keep it all! It has to be divided equally among the children!”
Luz looked at them, both angry and bitter.
“When Nanay was alive, who among you came to take care of her? Who stayed up all night to feed her porridge, change her medicine, and wipe her body? You said her money was worthless back then. So why are you coming to ask for it now?”
The atmosphere in the house was as tense as a bowstring. Marites blushed:
“You live alone with her, how can you not convince her to sign a will to leave everything to you?”
Luz held the will, her voice trembling but determined:
“The lawyer read it in front of all of us. Nanay herself clearly wrote to leave it all to me, because she knew I was the only one who would be with her until the end.”
Ramon was speechless, but still gritted his teeth:
“But ₱7 million is different! We will sue!”
Just then, the lawyer walked in. He held a thick file, calmly saying:
“Let me repeat, the will is absolutely legally valid. The old lady not only left this money to Luz, but also left a handwritten note: ‘My other children, if you find out the real amount later, please understand. I am not being unfair, I am just repaying the child who sacrificed 9 years of his life to take care of me.’”
The room fell silent. Marites pursed her lips, Ramon bowed his head. Everyone’s faces were red, embarrassed but did not dare to argue further.
That night, Luz sat in front of her mother’s portrait, holding the old savings book. Tears streamed down her face, but her heart was calm. She understood that the 7 million gift was not just money, but proof of love, of sacrifice that was not in vain.
As for her brothers and sisters – those who had abandoned her mother – now had to live their whole lives in regret and shame.
✨ Conclusion: Nanay used her wisdom to show that love and filial piety are more valuable than any excuse. As for Luz, from thinking that she would only receive ₱70,000, she suddenly became the sole heir to a fortune, but the greatest of all was the legacy of maternal love and justice that her mother left behind.
