Matet De Leon opens up about mom Nora Aunor’s financial situation before her death
Matet de Leon addressed claims that her late mother, Nora Aunor, experienced financial hardships before her death, despite having a successful career in entertainment.
In an interview with motivational speaker Chinkee Tan on his YouTube channel, Matet was asked to clarify Nora’s financial situation following reports that her savings were minimal until her final days.
“People would say my mom struggled, that she was poor. Do you know why? My mom, when it came to tapings, it was like ‘paid before or pay after,’” Matet explained.
“My mom would line people up. She would take her pay in cash and hand it out to the staff. And this wasn’t just a few hundred pesos—sometimes it was one or two thousand. Cameramen, everyone. If she saw kids on set watching, she would line them up too and give them money. How could my mom not run out of money?” she continued.
According to Matet, the veteran actress didn’t mind being left with little money as long as other people were provided for.
Now that the truth is out, Matet urged the public to stop insulting her mother.
“I hope that before criticizing my mom for being poor, before criticizing my mom for not having investments or savings, you recognize that she always prioritized people, her friends first, before herself,” she said.
While Matet considered that her mom may not have been taught how to manage money, she emphasized that her generosity was simply her nature. “To the point that there was nothing left. And as her children, it wasn’t our place to tell her, ‘Mom, maybe we could do this differently.’ No,” she said.
“We could advise her when she asked for advice, but if my mom didn’t ask, I wouldn’t interfere because she might get upset with me. She’s very generous—very, very, very generous. That’s why she didn’t save much,” she continued.
Matet also spoke about how personal insults directed at her mom affect her, which is why she became emotional during a past live-selling session after reportedly reading a comment about Nora’s death.
“When it comes to my mom, that’s different. You can criticize me all you want, say what you like, that’s fine—but don’t touch my mom, please respect her,” she stressed.
Nora Aunor passed away in April this year due to acute respiratory failure at the age of 71.
