A while later, a black pickup truck pulled up. My bodyguard stepped out. I smiled as I got into the car. From that moment on, his cruelty toward me ended…
The rain fell in torrents, each drop like a burning needle on my skin. I stood frozen, shivering from the cold and from my husband’s recent words. He opened the car door, glanced at me with contempt, and said in a harsh tone:
“You need to be taught a lesson. Think about it there.”
Then he slammed the door, started the engine, and drove off, leaving me alone on the deserted, flooded road, tens of kilometers from the restaurant. The sound of the engine faded into the rain, leaving a cold emptiness inside me that took my breath away. I tried to hold back my tears, but the harder I tried, the more my throat tightened with bitterness. A part of me still hoped he would come back, but the red tail lights simply receded into the distance, never looking back.
Standing alone in the rain, I saw more clearly than ever the cruelty of my marriage. This wasn’t the first time he had used a “lesson” to punish me. Sometimes it was mocking words in front of friends; sometimes it was days of cold silence. But today—leaving me in the pouring rain—this was the limit of his heartlessness.
I began to shiver, my clothes soaked and clinging to my body. Suddenly, headlights appeared in the distance. A black pickup truck stopped beside me. The door opened, and a tall man stepped out—it was my personal bodyguard, the one my father had insisted I keep after a family incident. I had never thought I would need him, until this very moment.
He held an umbrella and walked over, his voice deep and warm:
“Madam, get in the car, or you’ll catch a cold.”
I looked at him, feeling a mix of relief and bitterness. I smiled faintly and got into the car. The sound of the closing door felt like a full stop to the cruel act that had just taken place. From that moment, I knew: my husband’s cruelty toward me had ended. Not because he had changed, but because I had changed.
To outsiders, my marriage had always seemed enviable. He was the director of a large real estate company—polished, successful, and charming. I was the only daughter of a prominent business family. Our wedding had been reported by the media as a modern fairy tale.
But behind the doors of the luxurious mansion, reality was very different. My husband treated marriage as a “power contract,” where I was merely a decorative item, a means to strengthen ties with my family. He often reminded me, “You should be grateful to me. Without me, you are nothing but the rich girl you were born as.”
At first, I tried to convince myself to endure it, thinking that in time he would change. But over the years, the only change I saw was an increase in control and disdain. He restricted my friends, monitored my bank accounts, even secretly read my messages. Any small resistance was seen as a “challenge to his authority,” and I would be given a “lesson.”
That night, when he left me in the rain, I realized he no longer saw me as his wife. I was just a possession, something to be abandoned at will to assert his power. What he didn’t expect was that I was no longer alone.
My bodyguard—his name was Lam—had been assigned by my family for protection. He was quiet, professional, and maintained proper distance. But the way he looked at me shivering in the rain was not just professional responsibility—it was genuine concern. On the way home, Lam remained silent, but I knew he understood everything.
At that moment, I realized: I no longer had to endure. There were other doors to open—I just hadn’t dared to. I had lived too long under the shadow of a false marriage, and now it was time to reclaim myself.
The next morning, I woke up to find my husband sitting calmly in the living room, sipping coffee. He looked up and gave a faint smile:
“Awake? It must have been cold last night. Scared yet?”
I looked at him, no longer trembling as before. I simply replied:
“You don’t need to teach me anymore. I’ve already learned.”
His eyes flickered with surprise, then quickly returned to disdain. He thought I was bluffing. But that day, I called the family lawyer and began collecting documents. Lam quietly supported and protected me through every meeting.
The process was not easy. My husband tried to stop me, threatened to ruin my reputation, and even pressured my father’s business. But for the first time, I was not afraid. I remembered the icy cold rain—being abandoned in the street became my motivation to act.
When the divorce papers were filed, he exploded in anger, but the more he resisted, the more his true nature was revealed. Those who once admired the “polished gentleman” began to see his arrogance, selfishness, and cruelty.
On the day the court proceedings ended, I stepped outside into a light drizzle. But this time, I did not tremble. Lam silently held the umbrella beside me. I lifted my face, took a deep breath, and finally felt free from the gilded cage.
The rain continued to fall, but inside me was peace. I understood that no one has the right to “teach me a lesson” by trampling on me cruelly. The greatest lesson of my life was learning to stand up and leave a marriage that no longer held love.
