IN 2007, after the lead singer left, rumors spread that the band Journey would soon fade into history. For bands that are at the height of success and suddenly disappear, it’s often hard to bounce back. But Journey found an unexpected way to rise again — thanks to a video on YouTube of a band performing in Manila in 2006.
Journey, once a band that filled huge arenas and had legions of screaming fans, lost its voice when Steve Perry, the iconic frontman, left. His departure hit the band hard. They tried to continue without him, but it didn’t go well. Their previous hits started to lose traction, and fans no longer supported them the way they used to. The remaining members tried to fill the void left by Perry, but no one could match his distinct voice. As time went on, the band’s momentum began to die out, and their energy on stage diminished. There even came a point when their concerts were practically empty.
But fate had a surprise in store.
One night, a member of Journey was in Manila, watching local bands perform cover songs. That’s when he saw and heard something incredible — a man singing their songs flawlessly. It was as if Steve Perry’s voice had returned. The voice belonged to Arnel Pineda. In the video, Arnel sang Journey’s classic songs with ease — something only Perry had been able to do before. According to Journey’s lead guitarist, the Filipino singer delivered their English songs effortlessly and with power.
The band immediately discussed what they had seen and could hardly believe it. But doubts lingered. Should they really take the risk of hiring a total stranger, someone they didn’t know, to be the new frontman? Could this man perform in front of tens of thousands of people? Could he fill massive arenas? Despite their questions, the band knew they had found the answer to reviving their career.
They contacted the person who uploaded the YouTube video and asked to get in touch with Arnel Pineda. At first, Arnel laughed off the message — it seemed too good to be true. But soon, he found himself on a plane to San Francisco, heading toward the people who would change his life forever.
Arnel’s entry into Journey wasn’t easy. Many questioned his ability as an Asian singer. Some doubted he could draw a crowd of over 5,000 fans. But Arnel didn’t give up. Carrying the hardships he had endured since childhood, he showed the world that Filipinos have a talent worth celebrating — and that Filipinos don’t give up easily. Their strength comes from their experience, family, talent, and faith in God.
On February 21, 2008, Arnel stood in front of 20,000 people. It was his first time performing for such a large audience. The crowd expected to hear the voice they remembered from Journey’s Steve Perry days. Arnel was cold, anxious, struggling to breathe, and his fingers were numb. But when he held the microphone and started singing inside the massive arena, he was met with cheers, applause, and fans singing along.
This gave him the strength to carry on. Arnel didn’t disappoint Journey’s fans — both old and new — and he didn’t let down the band. From then on, Journey’s career was revitalized. They released several albums and continued touring.
Just last September, Arnel issued a public apology on Facebook after a less-than-stellar performance at the Rock in Rio music festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In his post, he started by thanking everyone who continued to support the band. He then addressed the criticism he received.
Here is an excerpt from Arnel’s heartfelt post:
“Hello everyone, firstly I want to apologize for the inconvenience I caused all of Journey’s fans out there. I know the band isn’t perfect right now… we’re going through some tough times. Anyway, my friends — you know who you are — I waited a while before posting again. So here I am. Bottom line: good is one. No matter how messed up the world is, maybe it’s because of the evil in all of us — from politicians to religious leaders pushing their agendas and influencing us. Again, I say: good is one.
I read most of your comments. Thank you. It’s overwhelmingly humbling. I didn’t post for selfish reasons or to feel good about myself — it’s part of my spiritual journey. What’s winning in this world nowadays? Is it good or evil? It seems many people hide behind screens to spread hate, cruelty, bigotry, and racism.
But remember, the universe is alive. It always gives back — good or bad — depending on what we’ve done. With God by our side, nothing can ever truly go wrong. Thank you to all the rockers who defended me. From the bottom of my heart — thank you. Now, let’s all try to choose goodness every day. I love you all.”
In a video taken on September 21, Arnel is seen struggling to hit the high notes of Journey’s iconic hit “Don’t Stop Believing.” Arnel admitted that he was suffering emotionally and mentally, and even asked his fans if they thought he should stay with the band.
In the end, he thanked everyone who stood by him from the beginning. His bandmates, who now consider him family, stood by him as well.
Today, Arnel continues to pursue his music career, believing that as long as there are fans — Filipino or not — who believe in him, he will keep singing until his last breath.
