Husband Returned from a Business Trip, Noticed a Strange Smell at Home, and Took His Pregnant Wife for a DNA Test – The Truth Made Him Break Down in Tears/th
And so we went for a DNA test. I never imagined there would come a day when I’d walk into a DNA testing center while carrying my husband’s child. I couldn’t sleep at all that night.
At that time, I was 16 weeks pregnant. My belly had just started to show. I was still suffering from severe morning sickness and often felt exhausted. Tuấn, my husband, had to travel far for a business trip that lasted nearly a month. Before leaving, he reminded me of everything—from eating well, going to prenatal checkups, to avoiding excessive movement or lifting anything heavy. He truly cared for me, always calling to check in and even sending me my favorite snacks from the places he visited.
But I never expected that something seemingly minor could almost destroy our family. That night when he returned, the moment he opened the door, he frowned:
“Do you smell something strange in the house?”
I was puzzled. Being pregnant had made my sense of smell extra sensitive, but I hadn’t noticed anything. During the few weeks he was away, I hardly left the house. Occasionally, my mother would drop by to cook me some soup or congee. I explained that to him, but he still rummaged through every room, inspecting every corner. He even went out to the balcony, sniffed the bedsheets, and opened the wardrobe.
Tuấn’s eyes showed suspicion, making me uneasy. “Could he really think there was someone else?” But then I looked at myself—a chubby-faced pregnant woman in oversized maternity clothes, always short of breath—and I chuckled. How could he possibly think that?
But the issue didn’t stop there. A few days later, he quietly suggested:
“Can we do a paternity test for the baby?”
I was stunned. It felt like someone had poured a bucket of ice water over me.
“You… you suspect me?” I asked.
Tuấn avoided my gaze, giving vague explanations—he just wanted to be sure, said my mental state had been unstable lately, and there had been too many coincidences. I was angry and hurt, but eventually softened. I thought, “Maybe he’s just being overly cautious. I’ll do it to put his mind at ease.”
And so we went for the test. I never imagined there would be a day when I would enter a DNA testing center while pregnant with my own husband’s child. I couldn’t sleep that night. The little one in my belly gently kicked, as if to comfort me. I rubbed my belly as tears soaked my pillow.
On the day we received the results, I went with Tuấn. His hands trembled as he held the paper. His eyes were lifeless. I lowered my head, heart pounding wildly, feeling like I might faint.
Then, Tuấn grabbed my hand and held it tightly. His voice choked as he said:
“I’m sorry… I doubted you. The result shows the baby is really mine.”
My tears burst out. I was angry, but more than anger, I felt deeply hurt. Throughout the exhausting months of pregnancy, I had to carry the weight of my husband’s baseless doubts. I thought that would be the end of it—but then Tuấn revealed a truth that made me both furious and heartbroken for him.
While I was pregnant, my mother-in-law—who had always been kind and treated me like her own daughter—called Tuấn and said that “there was a strange smell in the house” and she “felt something was off.” My mother-in-law believed in feng shui and spiritual things. Since she lived next door, she often stopped by. She told him, “Just check to be safe. Women these days… I’m only worried.”
At first, Tuấn brushed it off. But the strange smell, coupled with a few times my mother-in-law saw me going out a lot and chatting with the male neighbor, got into his head. He became obsessed. He decided to have a DNA test—not because he was certain I had cheated, but because… he was afraid. He was afraid that he loved me too much, and that if the truth wasn’t what he hoped, it would destroy him.
Hearing this, I cried while asking:
“Why didn’t you trust me?”
Tuấn held me tightly. For the first time since I got pregnant, he cried in front of me:
“I was scared of losing you and our child. I’m sorry. I know I was wrong.”
From that day on, Tuấn completely changed. He became even more attentive than before. Every morning he would get up early to prepare breakfast for his pregnant wife, buy all kinds of prenatal milk, carefully follow the check-up schedule, and read every parenting book he could find. Whenever I felt unwell, he would massage my back and help me lie down. Whenever I threw up, he cleaned everything without a word of complaint. At night, he would even listen to my breathing, worried I might not be sleeping well.
As for my mother-in-law, she stayed silent for a long time before finally calling to apologize. I understood that she didn’t hate me—she was just too afraid of something bad happening to her son.
Now, our baby is already 28 weeks in my womb. The kicks are strong, as if reminding me to stay happy. Every night, Tuấn whispers to my belly:
“Baby, I’m sorry I doubted your mom. I love her and you so much.”
Sometimes, the hardships of pregnancy feel like knives cutting deep. But through them, I’ve realized that true love is never perfect. It includes doubts, jealousy, fear… But if, after all that, there is still sincerity and repentance, then that love is still worth cherishing.
I’ll never forget the tears my husband shed that day, and I’ll never forget how hurt I felt being doubted. But more than anything, I am grateful for this child—for coming into our lives and teaching us this lesson: to be a parent, you need more than love. You need trust.
