Her last wish was to be buried together with her mother’s skeleton, to be forever embraced in her arms. But her father discovered something horrifying inside that coffin…
Emma was a young woman, only twenty years old, yet fate had unfolded in such a way that her youth quickly turned into a slow decay. The illness that drained her strength day by day had confined her almost entirely to bed.
She knew her end was near, and in her final weeks she made a strange request to her father:
“When I am gone, Father, please bury me in Mother’s arms. In the same coffin. I want to sleep forever embraced by her.”
Gabriel froze, his heart pierced as though by hundreds of needles, but he promised to fulfill her wish. And then, the day came.
The small church in an old European town was heavy with grief. Silence filled the air, broken only by the flicker of candles beneath the vaulted ceiling. Emma’s body lay in her coffin, her face pale, carved as though from marble. Gabriel stood beside her, clutching a white rose tightly.
His eyes were swollen from sleepless nights. He had lost his wife two years earlier, and now death had stolen his daughter too. Life seemed intent on destroying everything he had. Yet Emma’s request had to be honored, and so Margaret’s remains were brought into the church — a skeleton wrapped in white cloth.
The funeral attendants, led by Mr. Laurent, carried it with utmost care, as though each fragile bone still held a breath. The mourners inside the hall could scarcely believe their eyes. Some turned away, some crossed themselves, others stood frozen as if witnessing an ancient ritual.
Little Adeline, Gabriel’s youngest daughter, watched with wide eyes. She didn’t fully understand, but she felt deep inside that something was not right. She walked closer and whispered:
“Papa, is that really Mama?”
Gabriel knelt down, embraced her, and whispered back:
“Yes, my love. Now they will be together.”
The girl nodded, but her gaze was troubled.
Doctor Elizabeth, the woman who had treated Emma for years, stepped forward hesitantly.
“Are you certain about this, Gabriel? Perhaps it would be better to bury them side by side, but in separate graves?”
But he only shook his head.
“No, Doctor. This is what she wanted. I promised her.”
The attendants carefully placed the remains inside the coffin, and Gabriel himself arranged Emma’s hands so that they embraced her mother’s skeleton. A heavy silence descended. One by one, people came forward to bid farewell—some whispering words, others silently standing.
When all had left, only Gabriel and Adeline remained by the coffin. The little girl whispered:
“Mama, please take care of her in heaven.”
The father could no longer contain himself, and he wept.
After that, the coffin was closed, and the procession made its way to the cemetery. That day was cold, the wind blew snow from the rooftops. As the coffin was lowered into the ground with ropes, Gabriel suddenly heard a faint voice: “Mama.” He froze, the white rose slipping from his hand. “Did anyone else hear that?” he gasped.
Doctor Elizabeth tried to comfort him: “It must have been a child—there are many families here.” But Gabriel shook his head: “No. It came from inside.”
Adeline, unable to resist, pressed her ear to the coffin lid and suddenly cried out: “They’re talking! Mama is calling Emma!” The crowd erupted in murmurs—people glanced at one another, some stepped back, others covered their faces in shock.
Gabriel shouted: “Open the coffin! Now!” Laurent tried to restrain him, but the father unlatched the bolts himself.
And when the lid was lifted, everyone gasped in disbelief: Emma’s eyes were open, she was breathing, her lips trembling as she whispered hoarsely: “What’s happening? Where am I?” Gabriel fell to his knees, clutching her tightly, tears streaming: “You’ve come back, my girl. You’ve come back.” Adeline rushed to her sister, wrapping her arms around her, both of them weeping together.
But there was something else everyone noticed: Margaret’s remains were gone. The skeleton that had lain beside her had vanished without a trace. The coffin was empty, holding only the living Emma.
She was rushed to the city hospital. In the corridors, people whispered that the girl, once prepared for burial, was now walking on her own two feet.
Doctors ran every possible test—bloodwork, X-rays, scans—and found no trace of illness. Her body was perfectly healthy. Doctor Elizabeth pored over the reports, unable to believe her eyes.
But to understand what had happened, one had to return to the day Gabriel lost his wife. Margaret had gone out early in the morning to fetch medicine for Emma, whose sickness had just begun. She promised she would return before noon. But she never made it home. That evening, the phone rang: a police officer’s cold voice informed Gabriel of a terrible accident.
He dropped the phone, his anguished cry echoing through the house. Little Adeline clung to him, not understanding, while Emma wept bitterly, blaming herself: “If it weren’t for my sickness, Mama wouldn’t have gone, and she would still be alive.”
From that day on, sorrow reigned in their home. Gabriel worked day and night to cover treatment costs, Adeline tried to stay strong, but it was Emma who declined most rapidly. She often sat by the window, holding her mother’s photograph, whispering: “I can’t live without you, Mama.”
It was then, in one of her weakest moments in the hospital, that she called her father close and whispered: “Papa, when I am gone, please bury me with Mama. I want to be by her side, to hold her. Only then will I find peace.”
At first, Gabriel refused, begging her not to speak that way. But she insisted—and he promised. So when her heart stopped, he had demanded Margaret’s remains be brought forth and laid beside her.
Now everything had changed. Emma lived. Her illness had vanished. And though Margaret’s skeleton was never found again, Gabriel, Adeline, and Emma knew the truth: their mother had come to her, held her tightly, and that final embrace had become a miracle.
Sometimes, when the three of them sat together at the table, laughing, a gentle breeze would brush their cheeks, and they knew—somewhere near, unseen yet alive in their hearts—was Margaret.
And from that day on, Gabriel no longer felt crushed by grief. He believed that love was stronger than death, and that it lived within their home. And when, at night, the flame of a candle in Emma’s room flickered without cause, no one felt fear—because they all knew: their mother had returned for a moment, to see her children, to make sure they were happy, before fading again into silence, leaving only warmth and hope behind.
