After Ending My 7-Year Marriage in Court, Just as I Stepped Out of the Gate, One Phone Call Left Me With No Place to Belong…
My ex-husband gave me one last look before turning his back and walking away. I thought that was the end.
This morning, my husband and I went to court, ending our 7-year marriage with nothing more than a divorce paper signed by both of us.
We divorced out of exhaustion more than resentment. In the final months, he often left early and returned late, barely uttering a kind word even during meals. As for me, I became irritable, cold, locking myself in the bedroom every night. There was no third party, no jealousy or betrayal. We simply lived together like strangers, until one day I suggested divorce, and he quietly agreed. Just like that, we went to court. There wasn’t much attachment left—almost as if this was bound to happen sooner or later, with the only question being who would speak up first.
He said he would transfer me 3 billion VND—not as a division of assets, but as compensation for the years we spent together. I didn’t question further. For me, 3 billion was enough to start a new life, free and independent.
The court proceedings were swift. I stepped out of the courtroom with an oddly light heart. My ex-husband looked at me one last time, then turned away. I thought that was the end.
But just as I left the courthouse gate, my phone rang. It was my younger brother.
The moment I picked up, he blurted out: “Sis, is the divorce finalized? How much did you get? Can you ask for more? That house you and brother-in-law still share under both your names—demand your half! If you sell it now, it’ll fetch at least ten billion. If he doesn’t want to sell, he still has to pay you five billion. Whatever you can get, make sure you demand it, or you’ll regret it later.”
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. My brother didn’t ask if I was sad—only how much money I had gotten. At first, I thought maybe he was just worried about my future. But then he continued: “I already put down a deposit on a house, but I’m short about two billion. Lend it to me, okay?”
I hung up midway, unwilling to say more. Sitting in the back of a taxi, I stared out the window at the bustling streets, everyone rushing about, while I alone felt strangely adrift.
I’ve never been the type to calculate with anyone. Throughout my marriage, I never demanded anything from my husband. That 3 billion was something he offered on his own—I didn’t have to fight for it. I thought I was strong enough, but never imagined that my only brother—the very person I thought I could stay with for a while after the divorce, to find my footing again—would treat me like an ATM waiting to be emptied.
I replayed in my mind all the times I helped him: giving him money for his wedding, buying him a motorbike, transferring him cash whenever he was unemployed—never once asking for anything back. And now, he didn’t even care to ask how I felt. He only saw the money and assumed I had to give it to him.
I realized then that I couldn’t return to my parents’ house, because I’d run into my brother, who would guilt-trip or pressure me until I handed over money. I don’t know whether I should give him the money for the sake of peace, or keep it to finally care for myself.
