“The Secret to a Sister-in-Law’s Wedding”
Returning Early

According to the plan, my husband and I were supposed to return the day before his sister’s wedding. But since I finished work early, I decided to return home three days before the occasion to help with the preparations. I thought that Aling Beatriz—my mother-in-law who always likes to keep every detail in order—would be happy about it.

But as soon as I opened the gate, I was stopped. I heard Aling Beatriz’s voice from inside, shrill and mixed with laughter:
– “I’ve made a deal with the driver. If he’s pushed off the cliff, I’ll definitely get the ₱50 million inheritance!”

It felt like something was tightening in my chest.

The Doubt

At first I thought maybe I just misheard, or maybe he was just joking after a few glasses of wine. But when I heard the serious voice of a relative there, I was terrified:

– “Be brave, but make sure you do it cleanly. Road accidents are common.”

I couldn’t go inside. I backed away quietly, my knees shaking. The driver they were referring to was Mang Celso—a man in his fifties, newly hired as the family driver. Kind, quiet, with a wife who had left behind in the province. Why was he brought up in the conversation? And why was there money and inheritance involved?

Every night, I couldn’t rest. If it was just a joke, why did they talk in such detail?

The Tragedy

Two days passed, and before I could act, the news arrived: Mang Celso had been found dead under a curved road, just a few kilometers from our town. The police’s initial investigation: “Accident, the vehicle lost control.”

Everyone was grieving. But in my mind, my mother-in-law’s voice echoed over and over again: “Throw it over the cliff…”

The Evidence

I knew that if I spoke without proof, I might be accused of slander. So I started gathering evidence.

I talked to some neighbors: they said that they had seen Aling Beatriz several times often riding alone with Mang Celso, seemingly too close. A friend of the driver showed me a message from her: “It’s like I’m being forced into a relationship I don’t want, but I don’t know how to escape.”

And best of all, I had in my hands the recording of the night I overheard their conversation—every word was crystal clear

The Truth Before the Law

I took all the evidence to the police. At first they were reluctant, but after listening to the audio, they immediately began a thorough investigation.

On CCTV near the curve of the road, they saw another vehicle following and apparently hitting the back of the car driven by Mang Celso before it completely fell. The scratches and marks on the vehicle further strengthened the suspicion.

When Aling Beatriz was summoned, she vehemently denied it, saying it was “just a joke.” But when witnesses, text messages, and forensic evidence came forward—she was no longer free.

The Collapse of the Family

The day of the trial arrived. I saw Aling Beatriz in jail, wearing a prison uniform, her hair messy, but still trying to look dignified. The judge’s verdict: life imprisonment for the crime of murder with premeditation.

The entire clan was shocked. One by one, cousins and relatives who were involved in the conversation were called as witnesses. My husband’s sister—who was supposed to be getting married—wept and cried, forcing the wedding to be postponed.

My husband Ramon completely collapsed. He loved me, but he couldn’t accept the fact that his own mother was the mastermind of this vile plan. In the end, he was the one who asked for a divorce so that I could be free from the burden left by his family.

Ang Bawadi Isa

Aling Beatriz: from being a respected matriarch, fell into a despicable imprisonment. She had no freedom, no dignity, and was completely rejected by society.

Ramon: lived between truth and filial piety. She chose to let go, to live quietly and away from scandal.

Mang Celso’s family: although heartbroken, at least they achieved justice and compensation. But no money can replace the life of a father and a husband.

Me: left that house, carrying a lesson that will forever be etched in my mind—that evil can be hidden in the faces of those closest to us.

The wedding that was supposed to be the beginning of a new phase in the family, ended up being the cause of everything falling apart. The words uttered by Aling Beatriz—“When he falls, we have ₱50 million”—were the very words that laid down the sentence that would ruin his entire life.
