My close roommate had stolen all my necklaces, rings, and money. Ten years later, at the party celebrating my promotion to department head, I received a gift that left me utterly shocked…/th
It was the early days of autumn, the air crisp and cool. Morning dew still clung to the windowpane, and thin rays of sunlight slipped through the old curtain.
Lan opened her eyes and stretched, just like every other morning. She lived in a small rented room, sharing it with Mai – her classmate at university and the daughter of a well-off family.
But today, something felt different. The bed across from hers was empty.
Lan called softly:
— Mai… are you awake?
No answer. She walked over, noticing the bedsheet had been folded hastily, the suitcase gone. A strange unease crept into her heart, until her eyes landed on her wooden cabinet. The drawer was slightly ajar.
Lan’s hands trembled as she pulled it open… empty. The gold necklace her mother had given her for her birthday, the keepsake ring, and the savings she had scraped together over many months — all were gone.
She dropped heavily into a chair, her heart aching with both pain and humiliation. Questions flooded her mind: Why? I always shared my meals, my clothes with Mai. She was struggling, and I helped whenever I could… Why would she steal from me?
The anger rose, overpowering the grief. Lan clenched her fists and vowed silently:
— I will never trust anyone again.
Ten years passed.
Lan was now the head of the sales department at a large company. Outwardly, she was the picture of success: a crisp white blouse, polished high heels, and sharp eyes. But deep inside, the wound from years ago had never healed.
That afternoon, just as she finished a meeting, her secretary brought in a small gift wrapped in plain brown paper, with no sender’s name.
— Someone asked me to deliver this to you personally — the secretary said.
Curious, Lan unwrapped it.
Inside… was the gold necklace, the old ring, and a bundle of money neatly tied together. On top was an envelope, the handwriting so familiar it made her heart ache.
She sat down, hands trembling as she read:
*”Lan,
It’s Mai. You probably don’t want to hear anything from me anymore, but I still want to explain, even if it’s too late.
Ten years ago, my father fell into gambling and was drowning in debt. One night, some thugs took my mother, tied her to a chair, and told me if I didn’t have the money by morning, they would… I panicked, ran everywhere, but no one would help.
In the end, I looked over at where you were sleeping… and saw your cabinet. I knew I was betraying the one person who had treated me the best, but at that moment, all I could think of was saving my mother.
When it was over, I couldn’t bring myself to return. I knew you would despise me. All these years, I’ve worked any job I could find, saving every penny to buy back the exact things from that day.
I’m not asking for your forgiveness. I only hope that someday, you’ll understand… I never forgot that you were my best friend.”*
The words blurred before Lan’s eyes. All the resentment she had carried for ten years seemed to dissolve into nothing.
She pressed the letter to her chest, whispering softly:
— Mai… if only you had told me that day.
Outside the window, the sky shifted into a golden dusk. Lan felt her heart grow light, as if she had just found a long-lost piece of herself.
