Mr. Raghav – who is sixty – has spent all his life in a poor village in Uttar Pradesh, where he has worked in the fields all year long and worked hard for the education of his three children. His youngest daughter – Anika – is the biggest pride of his life. She is obedient, good at studies, beautiful and gentle.
A few years ago, Anika cracked the university entrance exam and became an accountant in a large company in New Delhi. There she met Arjun and fell in love with him – an urban boy from a rich family whose parents ran big businesses. When the two announced their marriage, Mr. Raghav couldn’t hide his concern:
– “They’re so rich, do they really love their children?” – he told his wife several times.
But Anika just smiled softly, holding her father’s hand:
“Dad, Arjun’s family is rich, but he is passionate and honest. Don’t worry. I will be your daughter-in-law and live a good life. ”
Being in love with his daughter, Mr. Raghav accumulated money and organized a good marriage by selling some farmland. The groom’s family held a lavish wedding ceremony inviting all the guests to a plush hotel in New Delhi. The wedding was as spectacular as a Bollywood movie.
On the day he sent his daughter to her husband’s house, he cried, but still said:
“Even if it is difficult, you will have to endure it, as long as you both love each other.” Everything will pass. ”
After marriage, Anika rarely returned to the village. Sometimes she would make excuses to be busy with work, sometimes she would say that her husband’s house was inconvenient. Every time he would call, Mr. Raghav would ask:-
“Are you okay? I’m so worried about you. ”
Anika would always reply:
“I’m fine, Dad. Don’t worry. ”
Finally, one day Mr. Raghav and his wife Mrs. Savitri decided to go to New Delhi to visit their daughter. They didn’t tell him beforehand, just brought some open chicken, a basket of clean vegetables and a few jars of pickles made by Mrs. Savitri herself. They wanted their daughter to taste at home.
When the taxi stopped in front of a sprawling three-storey mansion in Gurgaon’s wealthy area, the couple stood stunned. The iron gate opened on its own and a maid came out to welcome them. Mr. Raghav smiled sadly:
“My child will be very happy to live in such a luxurious place…”
But his smile disappeared as soon as he entered.
Anika came down from the top, her face pale when she saw her parents. She came running:
“Mom and Dad… Why did you come without telling me?”
“Mom and Dad were missing me, they wanted to see me for a while. ”
Then a sour voice came from behind:
– “Does any villager know the way here?”
A woman, dressed in an expensive silk saree, tying her hair thinly, holding a glass of wine, stepped out. She was Mrs. Meera – Anika’s mother-in-law.
Mrs. Meera looked at Mr. Raghav and his wife from head to toe, their eyes full of contempt. He raised his eyebrows:
“Why have you brought chicken and vegetables here? There is no shortage of these things in this house. ”
Anika quickly pulled her mother-in-law’s hand:
– “Mom… Please don’t say that in front of my parents.”
But Mrs. Meera said in an even louder voice:
“Do you think that by marrying my son you can bring a whole rustic man into this house? Remember your status. Don’t disgrace my family!”
Mr. Raghav’s face turned red. Mrs. Savitri stood there. Anika bowed her head, her hands trembling as she held the edge of her saree.
Unable to bear this, Mr. Raghav choked up:
– “How long has my daughter been living with such low eyes? He told me he was fine, happy. Is that happiness?”
He stepped forward, held Anika’s hand tightly, tears welled up in his eyes:
– “Come back to your father. I can’t let you live like this. ”
“But Dad…”
– “Dad, you’re not rich, you don’t have a mansion.” But no one in our family scolds you like a servant. Dad can’t stand it anymore. ”
Anika burst into tears and hugged her father. Mrs. Meera tried to stop him, but Mr. Raghav was resolut:
– “From today onwards, my daughter will no longer be your daughter-in-law.” She’s my daughter, and I’m taking her home. ”
Anika brought nothing but a small bag and ordinary clothes. They quietly drove back to the village by taxi. On the way, Mr. Raghav pressed his daughter’s hand and said:-
“Don’t apologize. All I want is for you to live like a human being, not a pretentious thing. ”
On that day, Anika returned leaving behind a luxurious mansion and a heartless wedding. She made a fresh start with her parents, where there was true love – no appearances needed, just the heart.
